The whalers village is the community within kannapalli and is flanked one one side by the ( Sheraton - that has black rock ) and the hyatt on the other end. There are several hotels in between and it is the nicest area. Ireally cant name the hotels that are in between anyone else know? but the area has everything you could ask for in a resort area. nick

Starting at the Hyatt the order of the accomadations are: Hyatt, Marriot Kaanapali Alii (Condos) Westin, The Whaler (Condos), Kaanapali Beach Hotel and finally the Sheraton at Blackrock.
In between the Westin and the Whaler is Whalers Village, food, shopping (Mall) with public parking. There is a nice path from on end to the other or you can walk along the beach. The Kaanapali Royal (Condos) sets right behind the Sheraton on the Golf Course. On the other side of Blackrock from the Sheraton is the Eldorado (Condos)sets back off the Golf Course and then the Royal Lahania (Condos/hotel) it set closer to the Ocean. From the Hyatt to the Royal can be accessed from the same road off the Highway. Any of the other resorts farther West you have to go further down the highway to their enterances. Hope this helps!
Sorry - should have said Marrott and the Kaanapali Alii (Condos) those are two seperate places. The way I typed it, it looked like one place. Mahalo!

thanks Riggsie , that helps me to better post my take on the area. Chris look to travel agents to get the best price or look at rates your self. Blue skys and pleasent holidays are the two biggest agents. But i was looking on this message board and the post stated that there were other agents to look at for pricing. nick

Kaanapali is the best place to stay in Maui, especially if you have kids! Great beach, row of nice hotels, Whalers shopping area.

Our favorite hotels in Kaanapali are the Westin Maui and Hyatt Regency. Thye have the best pools--waterfalls, caves, etc.--which is a plus for those with kids--and beautiful lobbies. Unfortunately, rates there are higher.

We just got back last night from a fabulous one-week trip to Maui. We (family of four, including 2 kids) stayed at the Embassy Resort and loved it. Yes, it is technically in Honokowai, which is right next to Kaanapali, but you can easily walk to the north side of the Black Rock from there. We thought the Embassy resort was very conveniently located. It is just far enough away from Kaanapali where we felt away from the crowds, yet could easily drive to Kaanapali, Lahania or any other spot we wanted to go to. We had an ocean front unit so we could watch the whales, sunset, etc. Incredible! To us, it was worth the extra money to upgrade. It also has a very nice pool and lovely gardens. The beach is fine, although it is more rocky offshore than some other beaches (beachshoes took care of that). We had no sales pressure whatsoever to attend any time share presentation, and we saw just as many childless families and couples as we did kids.
My wife and I walked past the Maui Kai, and to be honest, it looked like a dive from the outside from the beach. There were screen doors torn and hanging from some of the units, some broken windows, and it looked just plain uncared for. It might be a nice place to stay, but from what we saw, we said that was one place we wouldn't not care to stay at. We also liked Napili Bay. I didn't see much at all in terms of lodging at Lahania. It's more of a town to visit for shopping and eating and catching some of the boat tours. Kaanapali has a bunch of condos and hotels located along a very pretty beach. Enjoy.

The Embassy Resort is not "technically" in Honokawai andymore than Honolulu is "technically" in the state of Hawaii. The Embassy is in Honokowai. Period. It is bad enough that some hotels and resorts try to pass themselves off as being in Kaanapali when they aren't but why would anyone who has stayed at the Embassy have a problem with the fact that is is not in Kaanapali ? If someone wants to stay in Kaanapali then they should stay in Kaanapali and someone wants to stay in Honokowai then they should stay in Honokawai. But don't stay in one place and then say you stayed in the other !!

And some people like Rusty have a bad ass(coffee company) attidue and enjoy putting other people down. Hope you feel better Rusty for setting us all straight on how we should think. Thank god there are people like you monitoring the world. We are all safer for it!

Now that it has been established that the Embassy Suites is NOT in Kaanapali, I would just like to know if it is within walking distance of the Whaler's shopping area, etc.

Well, this is what Maui Revealed shows:

The Embassy Vacation Resort is definitely not walking distance from Whaler's Village/Kaanapali beach, it's about 2 miles, and it's not really a walking-type road. Their map shows it as definitely being in Honokowai, and the beach it's on is North Beach/Kahekili Beach, which was awesome. (Maybe the confusion is coming from Kahekili/Kaanapali?) Also, yes, you could walk along the beach to the north side of black rock, but just know the map says it's about 1.5 miles down the beach from the Embassy.

I realize this post was from months ago but just wanted to point out that Rusty is right and he's also wrong. The Embassy Suites actually sit in Honokowai. But he's wrong when he says there are no beaches in Lahaina (his first post in this thread). There are beaches and beachparks in Lahaina. Anyways, as for the original ? ........moderate priced hotel on Ka'anapali Beach: Royal Lahaina and Ka'anapali Beach Hotel. You get what you pay for!

Rusty Aug 22nd, 2003 02:32 AM

Sorry, you are right there are beaches in Lahaina. I meant to say there are no good beaches in Lahaina. However, I have recently been to Maui and I discovered a great beach in Lahaina that few opeople seem to know about - Baby Beach. Anyone ever been there?

I called Embassy Suites yesterday and they indicated that they have a regular shuttle that goes to Kaanapali Beach. I don't know how often or how convenient however.
