Where to go alone for a week?
I would like to travel alone next june, to some nice place where I can enjoy my solitude, take walks, read, etc. Any suggestions considering that I'm a woman?
Thanks
|
I might have some good suggestions but need to know where you are based and how far you are willing to travel either by car or air ??
|
Sedona Arizona.
Amazing place to go get in touch with whatever it is you can't get in touch with at home.
Unsurpassed beauty, peace, good dining and lodging options, safe, unlimited outdoor opportunities regardless of your level of fitness.
Just an amazing place.
|
Sedona in June is a bit warm. Also, June is when many families start travelling so a lot of places that often provide solitude will be more crowded.

I'd suggest the following (being a woman who always travels solo, I oftentimes look for what you're looking for).

--Northern CA - Big Sur area
--Oregon Coast - Cannon Beach (would go before June though if you're really craving solitude)
--Joshua National Park
--Bryce and Zion National Parks
--Vancouver Island
--San Juan Islands
--New Hampshire and Maine
--Vermont - Queeche, Woodstock, etc.
--check into a spa for a couple of days - one of the smaller ones (spafinder.com has a listing)

You may also want to check out journeywoman.com for suggestions as well. Enjoy!
|
I'll second Queechee, VT... also, check out Franconia, NH. In June the weather will be beautiful & not very hot at all.
|
How about New York City? The weather can be warm, but usually not unbearably hot in June. There are tons of places to plant yourself down to read a book or people watch. There are different kinds of places to walk, in parks, along the river, in interesting neighborhoods. And if you are looking for other diversions, there is no lack of things to do or see.
|
Gissell,
If you are on the East Coast, there are some great beach areas to consider. Cape May, New Jersey; Amagansett/Montauk in the Hamptons; Block Island or Martha's Vineyard; and the coast of Maine above Portland.

Early June will be a nice time as the younger kids will still be in school.

Most of my suggestions would be for Europe but that does not sound like what you are looking for by posting on the U.S. Board. I would just suggest that you not restrict yourself with gender considerations. I have traveled in Southern & Central Europe/Hawaii/Quebec/Egypt/Turkey alone and never had a problem. Yes it can be more dangerous state-side but what place would keep me away I can't think of . So my suggestion to you is go where ever you want to go being female and all and enjoy.

I did this a few years ago when I needed to spend some time with myself. I went to the Breckenridge, Colorado area - it is a great place to go in June, because it is not crowded. Most ski areas have lower rates in the spring and summer and are not packed with tourists. Another place is Sun Valley, Idaho.

To Chris,You suggest Sedona,Arizona,
can you suggest a hotel to stay at that's scenic, quiet, remote, and not too expensive? Thanks,Debbie
|
Have you ever been to Sedona in June, Idsant?
Average high and low at outset of June is 79 and 45 with humidity of 30%.
Hardly miserable!!
Do recall that the elevation is 6000 feet.
|
Debbie:
What kind of upper limit for the 'not too expensive' range?
There's quite a variety of accommodations, though the area's not inexpensive.
|
Hey Debbie, there are lots of wonderful little B&Bs, some very reasonable. For instance, when I was planning my trip, I found a few in the under $100 range that even had jacuzzi tubs. I recommend getting on a Bed & Breakfast finder & doing some research. Sedona is beautiful.

I was up on Vanocuver Island this past June and found it to be a relaxing place with nice weather. There are plenty of places to talk walks along the coastline. You could split your time between Victoria (museums, shopping, and gardens) and an area like the Tofino where there's solitude and great scenery.

Another favorite area of mine is the central coast of California. Cambria would be a nice place to visit as a single woman.

And if you choose to head to Europe, I've found Edinburgh, Scotland to be a great place for a single woman to explore. The people are so friendly and there is so much to see and explore by foot in this walking friendly city.

Hi Chris and Roadtripper, I was thinking along the lines of $150 a night but wouldn't mind going as high as $200 if service and location is good. Roadtripper thanks for the advice.I'll certainly look into the
B&B's in that area. Chris I was looking up hotels in that area and they do have a great range of prices. $200 or below is what I was
looking for. Thanks.

www.bedandbreakfast.com has the best listings of bed and breakfasts I have ever found, and you are sure to find a super room with a great view & luxurious tub for that price.

When I wanted a place to travel alone for a week, I took a hiking trip with Backroads. They sponsor hiking, biking and multi-sport (usually hiking + biking + some other sport like rafting or canoeing) trips throughout the US and around the world.

The trips are graded by ability (so you don't have to be a great athlete to participate) and whether you want to camp or stay in inns. There are also trips designed exclusively for solo travelers. Groups are usually approximately 20 with one or two guides.

I found Backroads to be great -- the accommodations, food and guides were fabulous. The fellow trekkers were interesting and varied. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would do it again.

BTW, my trip was a one week hiking trip in Santa Fe and Taos in September -- sublime.

Canyon Villa Bed and breakfast in Sedona is spectacular. Really an inn, but very personal and I think would be very comfortable for a single woman. Wonderful views and attention to detail.
|
Ojai, California would be a nice place to read, walk and relax for a week.
|
gissell,
If you are in the midwest you might consider the north shore of Minnesota.
It is very beautiful, the air is clean, the people are friendly and want you to enjoy yourself. And the weather in June is great there.
