Where to go alone for a week?

I would like to travel alone next june, to some nice place where I can enjoy my solitude, take walks, read, etc. Any suggestions considering that I'm a woman?
Thanks

Kate Dec 26th, 2001 03:43 PM

I might have some good suggestions but need to know where you are based and how far you are willing to travel either by car or air ??

Chris Dec 26th, 2001 04:50 PM

Sedona Arizona.
Amazing place to go get in touch with whatever it is you can't get in touch with at home.
Unsurpassed beauty, peace, good dining and lodging options, safe, unlimited outdoor opportunities regardless of your level of fitness.
Just an amazing place.

ldsant Dec 26th, 2001 11:17 PM

Sedona in June is a bit warm. Also, June is when many families start travelling so a lot of places that often provide solitude will be more crowded.

I'd suggest the following (being a woman who always travels solo, I oftentimes look for what you're looking for).

--Northern CA - Big Sur area
--Oregon Coast - Cannon Beach (would go before June though if you're really craving solitude)
--Joshua National Park
--Bryce and Zion National Parks
--Vancouver Island
--San Juan Islands
--New Hampshire and Maine
--Vermont - Queeche, Woodstock, etc.
--check into a spa for a couple of days - one of the smaller ones (spafinder.com has a listing)

You may also want to check out journeywoman.com for suggestions as well. Enjoy!
roadtripper Dec 27th, 2001 05:59 AM

I'll second Queechee, VT... also, check out Franconia, NH. In June the weather will be beautiful & not very hot at all.

hamlet Dec 27th, 2001 06:04 AM

How about New York City? The weather can be warm, but usually not unbearably hot in June. There are tons of places to plant yourself down to read a book or people watch. There are different kinds of places to walk, in parks, along the river, in interesting neighborhoods. And if you are looking for other diversions, there is no lack of things to do or see.

ryan Dec 27th, 2001 06:27 AM

Gissell,
If you are on the East Coast, there are some great beach areas to consider. Cape May, New Jersey; Amagansett/Montauk in the Hamptons; Block Island or Martha's Vineyard; and the coast of Maine above Portland.

Early June will be a nice time as the younger kids will still be in school.

Sarah Dec 27th, 2001 06:41 AM

Most of my suggestions would be for Europe but that does not sound like what you are looking for by posting on the U.S. Board. I would just suggest that you not restrict yourself with gender considerations. I have traveled in Southern & Central Europe/Hawaii/Quebec/Egypt/Turkey alone and never had a problem. Yes it can be more dangerous state-side but what place would keep me away I can't think of . So my suggestion to you is go where ever you want to go being female and all and enjoy.

Lynn Dec 27th, 2001 09:09 AM

I did this a few years ago when I needed to spend some time with myself. I went to the Breckenridge, Colorado area - it is a great place to go in June, because it is not crowded. Most ski areas have lower rates in the spring and summer and are not packed with tourists. Another place is Sun Valley, Idaho.

Debbie Dec 27th, 2001 09:37 AM

To Chris,You suggest Sedona,Arizona,
can you suggest a hotel to stay at that's scenic, quiet, remote, and not too expensive? Thanks,Debbie

Chris Dec 27th, 2001 09:39 AM

Have you ever been to Sedona in June, Idsant?
Average high and low at outset of June is 79 and 45 with humidity of 30%.
Hardly miserable!!
Do recall that the elevation is 6000 feet.

Chris Dec 27th, 2001 09:41 AM

Debbie:
What kind of upper limit for the 'not too expensive' range?
There's quite a variety of accommodations, though the area's not inexpensive.

roadtripper Dec 27th, 2001 09:55 AM

Hey Debbie, there are lots of wonderful little B&Bs, some very reasonable. For instance, when I was planning my trip, I found a few in the under $100 range that even had jacuzzi tubs. I recommend getting on a Bed & Breakfast finder & doing some research. Sedona is beautiful.

I was up on Vanocuver Island this past June and found it to be a relaxing place with nice weather. There are plenty of places to talk walks along the coastline. You could split your time between Victoria (museums, shopping, and gardens) and an area like the Tofino where there's solitude and great scenery.

Another favorite area of mine is the central coast of California. Cambria would be a nice place to visit as a single woman.

And if you choose to head to Europe, I've found Edinburgh, Scotland to be a great place for a single woman to explore. The people are so friendly and there is so much to see and explore by foot in this walking friendly city.

Debbie Dec 27th, 2001 10:13 AM

Hi Chris and Roadtripper, I was thinking along the lines of $150 a night but wouldn't mind going as high as $200 if service and location is good. Roadtripper thanks for the advice.I'll certainly look into the
B&B's in that area. Chris I was looking up hotels in that area and they do have a great range of prices. $200 or below is what I was
looking for. Thanks.

roadtripper Dec 27th, 2001 10:23 AM

www.bedandbreakfast.com has the best listings of bed and breakfasts I have ever found, and you are sure to find a super room with a great view & luxurious tub for that price.

When I wanted a place to travel alone for a week, I took a hiking trip with Backroads. They sponsor hiking, biking and multi-sport (usually hiking + biking + some other sport like rafting or canoeing) trips throughout the US and around the world.

The trips are graded by ability (so you don't have to be a great athlete to participate) and whether you want to camp or stay in inns. There are also trips designed exclusively for solo travelers. Groups are usually approximately 20 with one or two guides.

I found Backroads to be great -- the accommodations, food and guides were fabulous. The fellow trekkers were interesting and varied. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would do it again.

BTW, my trip was a one week hiking trip in Santa Fe and Taos in September -- sublime.

Canyon Villa Bed and breakfast in Sedona is spectacular. Really an inn, but very personal and I think would be very comfortable for a single woman. Wonderful views and attention to detail.

Sarah Dec 27th, 2001 12:32 PM

Ojai, California would be a nice place to read, walk and relax for a week.

neal Dec 27th, 2001 02:49 PM

gissell,
If you are in the midwest you might consider the north shore of Minnesota.
It is very beautiful, the air is clean, the people are friendly and want you to enjoy yourself. And the weather in June is great there.

Chris Dec 27th, 2001 06:09 PM

Debbie:
Canyon Villa (B&B)...canyonvilla.com
Graham Inn (B&B)
Enchantmant (resort)....enchantmentresort.com
L'Auberge de Sedona (hotel)

are the area's best lodgings.
The two B&B's both have rooms at less than $200 in June 2002. Enchantment is more (but you MUST visit if you go to Sedona. Have a drink on their terrace and hike around the canyon there if you have time).
If you can get out to Sedona sometime, take advantage of the opportunity. It's a really special place.

ldsant Dec 27th, 2001 07:20 PM

Chris:

Yes, I've been to Sedona in June for the last 8 years as well as in August as well (lived in Phoenix for 1 year and fell in love with Sedona during that time so I try and visit it at least twice a year). I love the place, but for someone who isn't used to heat, it's hot which is what I was trying to say. BTW, it really isn't necessary to be snotty in your response, is it?

I second Enchantment. I love the place - the astronomy activity is wonderful (so many stars!) as well as the spa and the surrounding places to hike.

roadtripper Dec 28th, 2001 09:08 AM

Enchantment is beautiful, but I think she said she would go as high as $200. Last I checked their cheapest room was $400.

darren Dec 28th, 2001 01:12 PM

i live on vancouver island...and it is a beautiful place to visit in june. lots of great secluded, yet"safe areas". reading ,overlooking the ocean...and seeing the olympia mountains, across a shiny blue sky...with warm temps....that is the ultimate in relaxation. there is so much to do on the island...victoria/tofino/hikes/up island towns...truly "god's" country!!!!

i hope this advice will persuade you...it is also cheaper up here in canada!!cheers

Elizabeth Dec 28th, 2001 01:43 PM

Gissell, do you have any interest in ashrams or monasteries?

Debbie Dec 29th, 2001 03:53 PM

Roadtripper and Chris,I looked at the B&B website and the Adobe Hacienda looks nice.Of course I like their most expensive room called "The Sedona Room" which is $209 per
night. It looks nice and has a view of the Red Rocks from your room.
Has anybody heard of or stayed at this B&B in Sedona,Arizona???

Gissell Dec 29th, 2001 06:06 PM

Thanks everyone for your suggestions!.
I live in San Diego, CA, but would like to visit some place I've never been, don't mind about how to travel (car, plane)
Sarah: actually I did post a message in the Europe forum, but because I'm still looking where to go, I like to have a wider range of options so I can pick better... So any place in the world is welcome!

Beth2 Dec 30th, 2001 08:14 AM

I'd recommend New England, with the beginning or end being Canyon Ranch in Lenox, MA

I stayed alone in a B&B in Niagara-on-the-Lake in Canada four years ago. It was a peaceful place to wander around; I also took an exhilirating jet boat ride up the Niagara Rapids, and attended 4 plays in 3 days at the Shaw Festival there. I've visited several other places alone, but this is one of the first places where I didn't get lonely by the 3rd or 4th day.

Curious Apr 1st, 2002 02:47 PM

Giselle, did you decide where to vacation this June?

Karen Apr 1st, 2002 03:11 PM

The end of the school year I always take a me alone trip - the last 3 years my husband has combined this w/ my birthday gift and I take off for Canyon Ranch (MA) this is a little pricey but at the age of 55 I'm worth it! Less expensive and a little for "earthy" also in lenox is the Kripalu Center - both master the art of spa-wellness. I prefer Canyon, I love the offerings, everything from massage to rock climbing, to spiritual awareness classes, aroma theray, fab food, and kayaking. perfect place to be alone and not lonely.

Gene Apr 1st, 2002 04:01 PM

How about Provincetown, Ma on the tip of Cape Cod? This is a very special place, surrounded by water on 3 sides and majestic dunes rising up in the back of town. If you go early enough in June you can still get low season rates. The Land's End Inn is a spot that might suit you. It is situated in the West end of town, high on a hill with magnificent views of Cape Cod bay from private gardens surrounding the inn. Just a short walk to the center of town for dining, shows, shopping etc.

Book a cabin on the Alaska State Ferry, Bellingham to Haines, back to Juneau, fly home. May or October would be even better.

Seamus Apr 1st, 2002 07:42 PM

If you're willing to venture outside the US, there is a terrific place about 30 minutes outside Guadalajara called Rio Caliente spa. Located in a volcanic valley, not the forced poshness and high prices, more like a great summer camp for grownups. I spent a week and emerged rejuvenated. No enforced program - hikes available in the morning before breakfast, yoga, tai chi, etc available throughouthe day as are great massage, mud packs, and other pamperings, all at very reasonable cost. The food is vegetarian and absolutely delicious (this from a devout carnivore!) Best thing - no phones! They have a website based in the US at www.riocaliente.com, and you can choose from several packages.

How about a multi-day bike tour?

There are some inexpensive ones, if you shop around. Choose something that doesn't cover too many miles per day, especially if you're not physically up to going too much. You'll find that some tours give PLENTY of time to ride the route, offer pick up (sag) service should you not want to, or are unable to complete the day's ride. You can choose whether to ride alone, or with others, or a combination, and could manage free time for reading, etc. (no x in my e-ddress)

You might like to check out gustywomentravel.com. Or maybe it's just gustywomen.com, I can't remember. They have soft-adventure and other tours to some great places just for women. They have some great trips.
