Where does NY really turn in upstate NY :)

I live in "upstate" and it drives me crazy when people think two hours north of NYC is upstate. It's like central NY, which calls itself that, is actually more northern than what many odd folks refer to as upstate. True upstate, to me, is anywhere within a 60 mile drive to the border of Canada.

Uh, OK.

We all have our crosses to bear.

Yo anything north of the GWB is Upstate

fashiongirl Aug 27th, 2002 06:08 AM

Anything north of Bloomingdale's is upstate to me.

dear 5 minutes: Hang in there - you're in my thoughts & prayers.

That's funny, I generally find that people from the OP's part of the state refer to that area as the "North Country." To think that someone would consider a place like Saratoga to be "downstate" seems a little odd.

This question has been discussed many times before on this site and consensus has been that "upstate" starts somewhere north of Westchester and Rockland Counties in the Hudson Valley.

al Aug 27th, 2002 06:39 AM

You mean upstate doesn't begin with Westchester?

ChillOUt Aug 27th, 2002 06:42 AM

If you are in NYC, then north of there would be Up, NO?
And don't let this drive you crazy, there are soooo many things going on in this world that are worthy of going crazy.
and this is really not one of them.

BuffaloBill Aug 27th, 2002 07:45 AM

Al:

There is no way that cities like Yonkers could possibly be considered "upstate."

BuffaloBill

Westchester is upstate. And so is everything North of it. Now lets talk about Long Island - Brooklyn and Queens are actually located on Long Island but are not considered Long Island.

What Aug 27th, 2002 07:55 AM

What a question, if 5mins doesn't know where upstate NY begins, who really cares and I love upstate NY.

JohnnyReb Aug 27th, 2002 08:06 AM

Y'all're a bunch of damn Yankees irregardless.

I always thought of upstate to start around Orange County or around the Harriman toll booth. If you live below the Harriman toll, you can commute to Manhattan and while you can if you live above Harriman its still a long commute but you live upstate :)

The part of the Bronx River Parkway where the tall buildings disappear and the trees and mountains take over.
