Where are you going for Memorial Weekend?

We're in the planning stages for a Memorial Weekend trip (a birthday weekend for dh). I'm looking at La Jolla/San Diego (I'll already be in CA), Mexico or Santa Fe. There are excellent fares right now to Mexico ($99 each way) so that is very appealing.

Are you traveling? Or are you staying at home to avoid the crowds?

Hi Beachgirl,
My best friend and I are hosting a party/BBQ for several couples on one of the nights. We rarely travel on this weekend.
My son's school just sent home a father/son canoe trip flyer for that weekend which I think is just idiotic since that generally is "family" weekend - Thankfully, my 13 yo son does not want to go, but what if he did??
LaJolla sounds great!!! Have fun planning!

I will be working Memorial Day holiday.

shormk2 Apr 16th, 2009 07:50 AM

We're debating between going to Baltimore to visit friends or St. Louis to visit Fiance's grandparents and to catch a Cardinals game...

I've never thought of Memorial Day weekend as a "family weekend"... I think of it more as a weekend to spend outdoors, hanging out with friends. Thus, the canoe trip mentioned above sounds like it would be a good activity for 13 year old boys and their fathers.

shormk2 - If you need any suggestions if you decide on STL let me know!
For my family, it was and is always family BBQ's, reunions, outings with my grandparents when they were alive and now outings with my kids and thier grandparents.
We always do a hike or biking with the kids one fo the days. When they were smaller we would head to the Pool as it was opening for the season.

Taking 2 days off, making it a long weekend at Niagara Falls. Almost ready, the only thing I cannot find out is where to rent a barrell that everybody goes in through the falls.

annesherrod Apr 16th, 2009 08:40 AM

Faina - I bet you can rent a barrel - How fun! I can see it now!!
I have never been there - do post a trip report!

Too early to tell...

Made plans to travel in the 4 corners area before I realized it was Memorial day weekend. Hope the crowds aren't too bad but got a good price on flight to ABQ and will have a great time.

BeachGirl247 Apr 16th, 2009 09:34 AM

emalloy, that will be a fun trip. And the weather should be nice, too. Are you going to Mesa Verde?

brando Apr 16th, 2009 09:42 AM

Annapolis/DC/Richmond, bro-in-law is getting married and we are making a trip out of it. Our son will enjoy dino bones and whales at the mall, my wife and I will enjoy blue crabs, and we'll enjoy our first whole family vacation.

We will go wherever the weather and mood takes us. Will probably explore the Butler wash area for petroglyphs and some Needles district of Canyonlands. Then we're off wherever.

Clearwater Beach, FL

DH's brother is getting married that week-end.

iceeu2 Apr 16th, 2009 10:57 AM

We will be on that wonderful island of Kauai!((r))

Beachgirl - La Jolla!! :-D

We often had parties on Memorial day but this year we have moved so no great backyard to swim and entertain in - methinks i will just be studying and reading where you all go and living through you! :)

BeachGirl247 Apr 16th, 2009 02:44 PM

Scratch Mexico! Leading news is the growing violence in Mexico from the drug cartel.
Hopefully, a travelzoo or ding deal will pop up soon that will make our decision easy.

Mom and annesherrod, I love bbqs. They are so enjoyable and relaxing. And I love bbq! Mom, we don't have a pool anymore either but we still have a great time with everyone in the backyard. It may have something to do with beer and the margarita machine! ;)

Beachgirl - That sounds fun!! I will swing by!! :)

I will be getting ready for our trip to Virgin Gorda in the BVI!

We usually have some friends over for a picnic in the back yard if the weather cooperates.

A little quickie trip to Mexico sounds like a good thing beachgirl.

BeachGirl247 Apr 17th, 2009 05:08 AM

Mexico did sound good. Murders of tourists is deterring me for now. Found a reward ticket to Vancouver so that has popped to the top of the list.

Caribbean Travel and Life has a Virgin Gorda article. I'll read it in the car today on our way to Dallas. VG looks so beautiful! Are you back from Hawaii?

iamq Apr 17th, 2009 05:23 AM

Hi beachgirl, yes we are back. Go read my trip report over on the US board. I think I am REALLY going to like VG. Have a great trip.
