What's Your Poison and Where Are You Traveling to for July 4th?

Chilean Chardonnay for me tonight. Gotta go easy, however, since we have to take Little Statia dancing at our family friendly restaurant on the beach later on. Nothing gets going there until about 11 p.m., which is past my bedtime, so I gotta manage to stay up until then. ;)

Unfortunately July 4th isn't a holiday here. We celebrate America's Independence on November 16 (see bluestar's "Happy Birthday America" thread for further info). But, we will be thinking of the wonderful USA over the weekend and wishing you all well in your travels and celebrations with loved ones and friends.

I know GoTravel already asked this question this week, but we weren't having poison then. :) So, what's your poison and where are you traveling to for the Fourth of July?

Iced peppermint tea while we play poker with our poker group this evening. On the 4th we are traveling all of 3 miles to the north to my cousins for her annual bash. Best wishes to all!

Blanc by Boutari from Thessaloniki, Greece, white table wine found in San Francisco!

No real travels, maybe to see "the march of penguins" french documentary, maybe to the local jazz festival.

My friend is bored at home recovering after 2nd surgery (ouch!) she'll come to spend a day with me, does it count as travel :)

ms_go Jul 1st, 2005 03:27 PM

A white Campania wine - one of the few I could find at Sam's Wines in Chicago - pretending I'm where I was two weeks ago (Positano).

We're not traveling anywhere for the 4th, except across the street to a neighbor's party. From the park behind our house, we can see the fireworks from at least five communities in our area, so we are looking forward to that.

Happy holiday weekend, everyone!

Poison tonight is a 2003 Santa Cristina, Toscana :-)

Tonight I will travel to the roof to conduct a dance that will appeal to Mother Nature with the hopes of bringing relief from the heat! Since the job my husband "applied" for fell through (drats!) we have 4 more years here. Don't get me wrong--I love living in San Antonio but the summer heat....summer was never a favorite season of mine and to live in the extreme version of it is not my idea of a happy day. That's my whine and I'm not serving cheese ;-) Boy, do I get grumpy in the summer!

GoTravel Jul 1st, 2005 03:44 PM

I have a long run in the morning so no poison for me!

Boy, I'm becoming quite the stick in the mud since I've started training for the marathon haven't I?

ms_go Jul 1st, 2005 03:48 PM

dcespedes - LOL. Just today, in desperation, I was contemplating the need to travel out on my parched, brown lawn to do a rain dance. It finally cooled down here (Chicago), but we've had virtually no rain in our area in the last month and none is predicted for the foreseeable future.

Glad to hear our island isn't the only place that's been "hotter than Hades." (sweat pours off me as I type) :)

LoveItaly Jul 1st, 2005 04:00 PM

Happy weekend Statia with your DH and Little Statia! Why is it every Friday when I read your post I realize I have no poison? It seems like every Friday I am going to the store - all your fault, LOL.

Happy and safe 4th of July everyone!

Fodorite018 Jul 1st, 2005 04:19 PM

No poison tonight, just water. Probably best after our night out last weekend, lol! We need to be up early again tomorrow...last day of football camp for DS, and it starts way too early. Tomorrow is all scrimages though so it is a lot of fun. Maybe the best part is that the camp is held one block from the major farmers market in Portland...so we can alternate watching the games and buying veggies:)

On the 4th we are headed over to Corbett (in the gorge) to my brothers. We will watch the parade there (truly old fashioned) and go to the festivities at the school, but then return home in the afternoon to join our big street event. Depending if we have time, we may stop at the Vista House which just reopened.

GoTravel--A marathon doesn't have to infringe, lol!

dcespedes Jul 1st, 2005 04:33 PM

Hi ms_go--my goodness, so close and yet so far! I was shocked, shocked!!, at the temps in Chicago when we connected through on the 21st. I never before realized it could get so hot in Chicago! Well, all I can say is I feel your pain ;-) By the way, living in Chicago, have you read Devil in the White City?

Finishing up a bottle of Domaine Des Cassagnoles and it's time to head back to the Asheville Wine Market to get another case. LOVE this inexpensive white table wine.

I'm here already. Mountain house - nice and cool and rhododendrons are in full bloom. I would tell you that I'm sitting here with a fleece throw over my legs and feet and slept on flannel sheets last night - but another Fodorite would call me a liar - doesn't believe summer nights are this cool in N GA :-) Just checked the thermometer and it's dropping below 70 right now.

Spending the 4th on the boat on a mountain lake. Labs get to swim. We get to soak in the sunshine - without humidity. Life doesn't get much better than this! Wishing everyone and safe 4th weekend.

Domaine LaFage Chardonnay. (this red wine girl is drinking whites...teeth whitening for 2 weeks)

Invited to a party for the 4th, but it's been, and will be 100 degrees here. So we really can't see going out for a party. We may just go after dark, fireworks in hand.

dcespedes Jul 1st, 2005 04:40 PM

Hi Statia, I know we're not the only ones broiling under the summer sun right now but I swear between the heat and the hormones...Tom Cruise better not show up at my door tonight!!!

Scarlett Jul 1st, 2005 04:56 PM

I am too tired to have any poison LOL
We are all packed out tonight. OWe went out for a bite and now I am trying not to go to bed ~ LOL
I woke at 5 and now I am really feeling it.

LoveItaly, happy things are calming down and getting back to normal.
GoT-that's what you get for being such a healthy athletic girl :D
mms- will you see the Big Fireworks ?
Faina- it especially counts as travel when you do it wounded :)
Happy 4th **==

Hi Everyone! Hi Statia & Little Statia!

Just returned from trip to Home Depot & dinner at local Irish Pub with DH. Poison was their by the glass Shiraz...not bad.

Tonight, we'll watch "Spanglish" on DVD and hit the hay early. DH has notified me that he would like to leave at 6am (this is earlier than I wake up for work!) tomorrow morning to drive up to Limerock race track in Connecticut (3 hour drive from home in NJ). Tomorrow we'll enjoy the Speed World Challenge GT races & meet the drivers for the Volvo team (we are Volvo freaks).

Thunderstorms just moved through & weather has cooled off. Should be a beautiful day tomorrow!

Happy weekend everyone! Have fun dancing Statias! :)

Scarlett Jul 1st, 2005 05:08 PM

Trisha, I really enjoyed Spanglish and thought Tea Leoni was hilarious!

CAPH52 Jul 1st, 2005 09:18 PM

For a change from my usual Friday night cheap red wine, I'm drinking beer tonight. Leinenkugel's Red. Love their dark beer but can rarely find 12 packs of it.

We're going to take it very easy this weekend. Give my husband a chance to rest up. The trip to Milwaukee last weekend was great. We all enjoyed it. But I think it was a little hard on my husband.

Our current plan is to go to the fireworks in the next suburb over on the 4th. It's a suburb with many office buildings and hotels but few residents. So they have a very strong tax base. And they use part of that money to put on a great show every 4th. They always have a formerly big-name band followed by phenomenal fireworks. And the setting is just incredible. It's held in this relatively small park (with a lake) that's surrounded by tall office buildings. They play pre-recorded patriotic music. And, as the fireworks go off, they're reflected in the glass of the office buildings. Really awesome!

LoveItaly Jul 1st, 2005 09:32 PM

Hi CAPH52, I sure hope you and your DH and family have a relaxing weekend. The fireworks sound awesome, enjoy! Good wishes to all of you.

CAPH52 Jul 1st, 2005 09:38 PM

Thanks, LoveItaly. The same to you! I'm glad to hear that July is so far a calmer month for you than June was. Hope it stays that way!
