What's Your Poison and Where Are You Traveling to for July 4th?

Chilean Chardonnay for me tonight. Gotta go easy, however, since we have to take Little Statia dancing at our family friendly restaurant on the beach later on. Nothing gets going there until about 11 p.m., which is past my bedtime, so I gotta manage to stay up until then. ;)

Unfortunately July 4th isn't a holiday here. We celebrate America's Independence on November 16 (see bluestar's "Happy Birthday America" thread for further info). But, we will be thinking of the wonderful USA over the weekend and wishing you all well in your travels and celebrations with loved ones and friends.

I know GoTravel already asked this question this week, but we weren't having poison then. :) So, what's your poison and where are you traveling to for the Fourth of July?

iamq Jul 1st, 2005 03:15 PM

Iced peppermint tea while we play poker with our poker group this evening. On the 4th we are traveling all of 3 miles to the north to my cousins for her annual bash. Best wishes to all!

Blanc by Boutari from Thessaloniki, Greece, white table wine found in San Francisco!

No real travels, maybe to see "the march of penguins" french documentary, maybe to the local jazz festival.

My friend is bored at home recovering after 2nd surgery (ouch!) she'll come to spend a day with me, does it count as travel :)

ms_go Jul 1st, 2005 03:27 PM

A white Campania wine - one of the few I could find at Sam's Wines in Chicago - pretending I'm where I was two weeks ago (Positano).

We're not traveling anywhere for the 4th, except across the street to a neighbor's party. From the park behind our house, we can see the fireworks from at least five communities in our area, so we are looking forward to that.

Happy holiday weekend, everyone!

dcespedes Jul 1st, 2005 03:36 PM

Poison tonight is a 2003 Santa Cristina, Toscana :-)

Tonight I will travel to the roof to conduct a dance that will appeal to Mother Nature with the hopes of bringing relief from the heat! Since the job my husband "applied" for fell through (drats!) we have 4 more years here. Don't get me wrong--I love living in San Antonio but the summer heat....summer was never a favorite season of mine and to live in the extreme version of it is not my idea of a happy day. That's my whine and I'm not serving cheese ;-) Boy, do I get grumpy in the summer!

GoTravel Jul 1st, 2005 03:44 PM

I have a long run in the morning so no poison for me!

Boy, I'm becoming quite the stick in the mud since I've started training for the marathon haven't I?

ms_go Jul 1st, 2005 03:48 PM

dcespedes - LOL. Just today, in desperation, I was contemplating the need to travel out on my parched, brown lawn to do a rain dance. It finally cooled down here (Chicago), but we've had virtually no rain in our area in the last month and none is predicted for the foreseeable future.

Statia Jul 1st, 2005 03:55 PM

Glad to hear our island isn't the only place that's been "hotter than Hades." (sweat pours off me as I type) :)

LoveItaly Jul 1st, 2005 04:00 PM

Happy weekend Statia with your DH and Little Statia! Why is it every Friday when I read your post I realize I have no poison? It seems like every Friday I am going to the store - all your fault, LOL.

Happy and safe 4th of July everyone!

Fodorite018 Jul 1st, 2005 04:19 PM

No poison tonight, just water. Probably best after our night out last weekend, lol! We need to be up early again tomorrow...last day of football camp for DS, and it starts way too early. Tomorrow is all scrimages though so it is a lot of fun. Maybe the best part is that the camp is held one block from the major farmers market in Portland...so we can alternate watching the games and buying veggies:)

On the 4th we are headed over to Corbett (in the gorge) to my brothers. We will watch the parade there (truly old fashioned) and go to the festivities at the school, but then return home in the afternoon to join our big street event. Depending if we have time, we may stop at the Vista House which just reopened.

GoTravel--A marathon doesn't have to infringe, lol!

dcespedes Jul 1st, 2005 04:33 PM

Hi ms_go--my goodness, so close and yet so far! I was shocked, shocked!!, at the temps in Chicago when we connected through on the 21st. I never before realized it could get so hot in Chicago! Well, all I can say is I feel your pain ;-) By the way, living in Chicago, have you read Devil in the White City?

**== Happy 4th of July, everyone! **==

starrsville Jul 1st, 2005 04:40 PM

Finishing up a bottle of Domaine Des Cassagnoles and it's time to head back to the Asheville Wine Market to get another case. LOVE this inexpensive white table wine.

I'm here already. Mountain house - nice and cool and rhododendrons are in full bloom. I would tell you that I'm sitting here with a fleece throw over my legs and feet and slept on flannel sheets last night - but another Fodorite would call me a liar - doesn't believe summer nights are this cool in N GA :-) Just checked the thermometer and it's dropping below 70 right now.

Spending the 4th on the boat on a mountain lake. Labs get to swim. We get to soak in the sunshine - without humidity. Life doesn't get much better than this! Wishing everyone and safe 4th weekend.

Austin Jul 1st, 2005 04:40 PM

Domaine LaFage Chardonnay. (this red wine girl is drinking whites...teeth whitening for 2 weeks)

Invited to a party for the 4th, but it's been, and will be 100 degrees here. So we really can't see going out for a party. We may just go after dark, fireworks in hand.

dcespedes Jul 1st, 2005 04:40 PM

Hi Statia, I know we're not the only ones broiling under the summer sun right now but I swear between the heat and the hormones...Tom Cruise better not show up at my door tonight!!!

Scarlett Jul 1st, 2005 04:56 PM

I am too tired to have any poison LOL
We are all packed out tonight. OWe went out for a bite and now I am trying not to go to bed ~ LOL
I woke at 5 and now I am really feeling it.
Statia, have fun dancing!!
LoveItaly, happy things are calming down and getting back to normal.
GoT-that's what you get for being such a healthy athletic girl :D
mms- will you see the Big Fireworks ?
Faina- it especially counts as travel when you do it wounded :)
Happy 4th **==

Hi Everyone! Hi Statia & Little Statia!

Just returned from trip to Home Depot & dinner at local Irish Pub with DH. Poison was their by the glass Shiraz...not bad.

Tonight, we'll watch "Spanglish" on DVD and hit the hay early. DH has notified me that he would like to leave at 6am (this is earlier than I wake up for work!) tomorrow morning to drive up to Limerock race track in Connecticut (3 hour drive from home in NJ). Tomorrow we'll enjoy the Speed World Challenge GT races & meet the drivers for the Volvo team (we are Volvo freaks).

Thunderstorms just moved through & weather has cooled off. Should be a beautiful day tomorrow!

Happy weekend everyone! Have fun dancing Statias! :)

Scarlett Jul 1st, 2005 05:08 PM

Trisha, I really enjoyed Spanglish and thought Tea Leoni was hilarious!

CAPH52 Jul 1st, 2005 09:18 PM

For a change from my usual Friday night cheap red wine, I'm drinking beer tonight. Leinenkugel's Red. Love their dark beer but can rarely find 12 packs of it.

We're going to take it very easy this weekend. Give my husband a chance to rest up. The trip to Milwaukee last weekend was great. We all enjoyed it. But I think it was a little hard on my husband.

Our current plan is to go to the fireworks in the next suburb over on the 4th. It's a suburb with many office buildings and hotels but few residents. So they have a very strong tax base. And they use part of that money to put on a great show every 4th. They always have a formerly big-name band followed by phenomenal fireworks. And the setting is just incredible. It's held in this relatively small park (with a lake) that's surrounded by tall office buildings. They play pre-recorded patriotic music. And, as the fireworks go off, they're reflected in the glass of the office buildings. Really awesome!

LoveItaly Jul 1st, 2005 09:32 PM

Hi CAPH52, I sure hope you and your DH and family have a relaxing weekend. The fireworks sound awesome, enjoy! Good wishes to all of you.

CAPH52 Jul 1st, 2005 09:38 PM

Thanks, LoveItaly. The same to you! I'm glad to hear that July is so far a calmer month for you than June was. Hope it stays that way!

ElendilPickle Jul 1st, 2005 09:48 PM

Without actually getting up and going into the kitchen to look, I believe my poison was a glass of Yvecourt Rose - I mean, I know it was Rose, but I am drawing a blank on the name...

We're staying home, working on editing our state home school newsletter and going to a friend's house to grill and watch her town's fireworks.

Marilyn Jul 1st, 2005 11:22 PM

It's been so hot here lately, G&T's have been the poison of choice.

We're staying HOME this weekend, and glad of it. Trip to Dallas and San Antonio coming up in 10 days, and lots of travel later in the year. Feels great to get some things done around the house.

Happy 4th to all!

OneWanderingJew Jul 2nd, 2005 12:42 AM

No poison at 4 am but earlier I had Molson's at the neighbor's Canada Day celebration and then ended up switching to vodka tonic when we went out w/friends. I haven't had vodka anything in over a year--still tastes good, I might add, especially that smooth Grey Goose! I must be a lightweight now (horrors!!) b/c my stomach is rebelling slightly at the moment.

We're not travelling this year but my husband at least is taking some time off. We'll likely walk a mile or so to the fireworks held at the huge town park that conveniently is held by our new house. I have absolutely no idea what kind of show they put on but it must be kind of good b/c they close off the main road after the parking lots fill up...

GoT--Good luck w/the run. Marathon? Full or half??Either way, the thought makes me feel like a fat, lazy slob ;)

CAPH, LI--Just wanted to say hello! CAPH's fireworks show sounds amazing :)

LI--Hope your trip to the store was fruitful >:D<

And Starrsville-I'm completely jealous as it's been sweltering and the friz index is off the charts! I think you should invite some nice fororites to visit, girlfriend ((a))

Scarlett--I still have a room to unpack and definately feel your pain. Packing is so much fun. Not! :D

And to everyone else--Happy Fourth ::==

(Anyone impressed w/my mastery of emoticons? I just figured out where to find the cheatsheet. I know I overdid it but one must amuse herself while one's husband sleeps soundly and most of the W. Hemisphere does too ((o))

OneWanderingJew Jul 2nd, 2005 12:45 AM

Oh, crud. I didn't earn a 100% on my little emoticon self-challenge.

Let's try that flag again **==

starrsville Jul 2nd, 2005 04:15 AM

Come on up, OWJ! It's so nice and cool up here! It's in the 80's-90's "down below" but stays so much cooler up on the mountain. I love to watch the temp drop as I drive up from town!

Actually, right now is not the best time. I'm cleaning out storage units, cleaning out closets up here, washing everything, rearranging everything. It feels like I'm in the middle of a move. After the washing machine stops, come on up! I'll be spending a lot of time up here during the summer. I'm going to try to tag on Fridays or Mondays to make 3 day weekends during the summer. Bring H and head on up! :-)

GoTravel Jul 2nd, 2005 05:27 AM

Full OWJ, I'm running the NYC Marathon this year.

PamSF Jul 2nd, 2005 08:34 AM

Once again I am getting to this on Saturday am. Right now my poison is some black coffee. Tomorrow we motor up to Healdsburg(Sonoma wine country) for a stay until Tuesday morning. The fireworks are at the high school . The fun is more in walking to the "show" an seeing all the townsfolk in the midst of their own 4th celebrations. The fireworks are very small town in nature.

Marilyn Jul 2nd, 2005 09:23 AM

OWJ, if you preview your reply, you'll see the emoticons as they will appear in the final post.

Amendment to no travel plans: We're invited up to Yountville on the 3rd for a family BBQ. This will involve, as always, a printed menu, at least 6 courses, champagne, dessert wine, at least 5 other wines, and a huge crippling blow to my diet. Sigh. :-D

gyppielou Jul 2nd, 2005 05:39 PM

Live 8 is most definately my poison tonight after a glorious family reunion.

LiveAid seems like yesterday. I was working at a vegetarian restaurant,in WoodsHole,...of course I went by the name of Gypsy, and my boss doubled my tips I was donating to LiveAid. We seemed to come so far, yet we've yet to reach anywhere we'd believed in. Has it really been 20 years?

Here's to tonight. Here's to our dreams and tomorrows!!! Cheers!

Scarlett Jul 2nd, 2005 06:12 PM

gyppie,
our son emailed this afternoon to say that it was 4:30 am in Japan and he was listening/watching Live 8 and waiting to see his all time favorite band Pink Floyd.
Oh what memories that brought :)

Tonights poison..
Iced tea
.. making lists and calling Portland, lining up apartments to see next week.
Called skylight guys earlier, a tree dropped its top on our kitchen skylight and now we need a new one :(

BTilke Jul 2nd, 2005 06:15 PM

Pool water is my poison--I'm visiting my mom in central Florida and have been swimming like a madwoman in the (shark free, hooray) pool whenever the storm clouds are not in sight. I'm up to 24 laps a day and love it--it's great to be able to exercise without bugging my slightly arthritic right knee.
I would liked to have stay through the 4th, but instead will be on my way back to London. Happy and safe celebrations, everybody!

Birdie Jul 2nd, 2005 06:21 PM

A nice Chard accompanying the lobsters we enjoyed on our last day on Cape Cod. We head home to Williamsburg tomorrow. The 4th will include a pig pickin on the river, CW fireworks and then nail biting while my pyro husband and his buddy set off fireworks in the cul-de-sac.

starrsville Jul 2nd, 2005 06:29 PM

I am jealous of the lobster and Cape Cod. I had hoped to be in Truro on the 4th. Safe travels home and be careful with the fireworks!

annesherrod Jul 2nd, 2005 08:28 PM

Mojita (sp) - Yum

going across the river to belleville, IL for a relatives BBQ.
Going to Michigan later in the week though!!

CAPH52 Jul 2nd, 2005 08:49 PM

So I take it you live in St.Louis, Annesherrod? Belleville brings back many memories. Some good, some not so.

annesherrod Jul 3rd, 2005 08:17 AM

Hi Caph52!!
Yes, we are in STL. My DH brother decided to buy a house in Belleville because you can get more house for your money and his wife was from there.
It is not my favorite place to visit to be honest!!
My husband and his brother grew up in clayton so it is somewhat of different place culturely(sp)
Have a Happy 4th of July.

Just got done making the obligatory pancakes w/ blueberries and stgrawberries!!
