What to pack?

What is the weather this time of the month in San Fran? I do not know what to pack ( for day and night). Arriving the 3rd week of September for 2 nights. Any suggestions?

sumreknot Sep 5th, 2006 06:24 PM

layer..we were there same time 2 yrs ago...HOT...however, I know it can get cold..so take one pair of long shorts, cotton tees and a jacket...

Gekko Sep 5th, 2006 06:25 PM

Check weather.com the day before you leave ... but be prepared for just about anything ... 50's to 90's.

Enjoy San Francisco!

I'll let you know when I find a crystal ball.

seetheworld Sep 5th, 2006 06:36 PM

Make sure you bring along a sweater or light jacket as it can get nippy, especially when the fog sets in. Pack pants as well. And comfortable walking shoes for all of those hills!

Monica_S Sep 5th, 2006 06:38 PM

My crystal ball ran out of batteries or I would've used my own!!!Thanks for nothing!!!!

Oh and do have a great time in San Fran Monica. Its on my list of places to go still!!!

happytrailstoyou Sep 5th, 2006 07:09 PM

My comment may have seemed flippant, but it wasn't.

You had already received the only logical answer:

To which I would add, bring layers.

My remark was inspired by my visit to San Francisco in early September, 2005, when it was so cold and windy that we cut two days off our planned four-day visit and went to where it was 20 degrees warmer--which was every place 15 to 20 miles away.

Your hotel will have umbrellas to loan.

That makes me smile. Have a great night happy trails

Monica_S Sep 5th, 2006 07:19 PM

I agree...now that was good traveling insight.Thank You.

LoveItaly Sep 5th, 2006 07:35 PM

Hi Monica_S, layers definetly. And keep in mind that SF has microclimates. I usually find it sunnier and warmer say in North Beach versus in the Richmond District (which you will probably not be in) that can be so foggy. Market St. can get cold and windy, especially when the sun starts to go down. Saying that generally SF has nice weather in September. And yes, do wear comfortable shoes! BTW, I posted on your restaurant thread.

elnap29 Sep 5th, 2006 09:59 PM

Forget the shorts unless you plan to travel across the bay to a warmer inland area. Normally SF has "Indian Summer" in September - it can get hot! But this year, we have not had our normal warm weather in the entire region. The LAYERS advice is best. Bring long pants, short sleeved top, long-sleeved top, sweater, and jacket. Good walking shoes are essential, depending upon your plans. It's a great walking city - enjoy the hills and the amazing views. It can be breezy or very windy so think of your clothing as windbreakers this time of year. high 50's at night, maybe high 60's day - up to low 70's at most. If you are dressed for the weather, you will enjoy yourself immensely.

Armani_Rugpilot Sep 5th, 2006 10:06 PM

You asking for weather "this time of the month" and trip is 3 weeks later. No easy for locals to say more on search Fodors and everyperson asking same question five years now and again. YOu not fimd answer for better. Dressing layers every day is our rule.

Layers. Monica, people aren't kidding with you.

San Francisco has the changing-est weather of any place I have EVER been. Turn a corner and you'll suddenly need to put a sweater on... or take it off.

I'd pack pants, good walking shoes, and various tops that can be layered. I was caught in a DOWNpour (friggin monsoon) one trip but just ducked into a drug store and bought an umbrella. If you need something just go to Fisherman's Wharf where they have racks of fleece to sell to underdressed tourists (again, no joke).

Monica_S Sep 6th, 2006 12:28 PM

I will be at SFO, my house rental in South San Fran. (Greenwood Dr), Monster park and Fish. Wharf... maybe union square...do I still need a sweater?

FainaAgain Sep 6th, 2006 01:09 PM

Today is a sunny day. I walked out of the building at lunch, and immediately put my sweater on. The weather is always unpredictable.

And leaving your rented house, remember that the South city is warmer then San Francisco (these are 2 different cities with Daly City and Brisbane in between... maybe more)

suze Sep 6th, 2006 01:22 PM

Monica- In a word... YES

LoveItaly Sep 6th, 2006 01:24 PM

Monica, I have been to Monster Park when it was lovely and I have been there when it was shivering cold.

When you are near the SF Bay (Fisherman's Wharf for example) it can get quite cold. Of course you can do what so many tourist do and buy one of the sweatshirts at one of the stands in Fisherman's Wharf.

I would never spend a day in SF without some type of coverup. And I also always have one in the evenings.

The advice, if you want to be sure to be comfortable, is again, layer. Yes sometime it can be a drag carrying a sweater or jacket but it sure beats suddenly being freezing cold. Well at least that is my thinking and I belive many others.

FainaAgain Sep 6th, 2006 01:48 PM

"I would never spend a day in SF without some type of coverup." - LoveItaly, next time bring Kal for that :))

LoveItaly Sep 6th, 2006 02:09 PM

LOL Faina!!! Why didn't I think of that!! ;;)

Monica_S Sep 6th, 2006 03:53 PM

Layers..got it!!Thanks girls!!!

J62 Sep 6th, 2006 04:03 PM

Actually there's no need to bring layers. There are countless shops the tourist area (i.e. fishermans wharf) willing to sell you a fleece jacket w/ SF something written on it. They make a mint selling these jackets to tourists who arrive in sunny california wearing shorts and tank tops.

Or so I've heard.

Monica_S Sep 6th, 2006 04:17 PM

I'm from Palm Springs,CA weather...and seriously do not own a sweater. So I will be the tourist buying a sweater at the wharf.

suze Sep 6th, 2006 04:20 PM

imo that's a fine plan. maybe you won't need one after all. and if you do, then you'll have a nice San Francisco sweatshirt to take home as a souvenier -lol!!

J62 Sep 6th, 2006 04:24 PM

Seriously tho, I do recommend you bring sweatshirt and light jacket. You WILL need long sleeves and layers at some point during your trip. Evenings/mornings have been in the low 50's lately - add fog and it can be downright cold if you are underdressed, especially if you are out on the bay or bridge. You can still buy as SF fleece jacket as a souvenier.

trippinkpj Sep 6th, 2006 06:07 PM

All good advise. Probably nice with no rain (you could still get fog and a cool breeze), but one should always be prepared in SF. Yes, layers are the way to go in SF. Because one part of the city can have different weather than another.

suze Sep 7th, 2006 06:36 AM

J62- But the woman doesn't OWN a sweater (or a sweatshirt or a jacket).

J62 Sep 7th, 2006 08:25 AM

But since she isn't travelling for a few weeks I assume there is still time to buy something beforehand so she's not standing outside the gift shop freezing to death waiting for it to open.

I find that getting off the plane and out of the terminal into the open air at SFO I'm glad I have a jacket in hand.
