Thanks all. You have given me much to think about. We are going to Nashville next Aug and want to visit another southern town to show the kids the deep south. Might have to seriously check out Charleston. Personally I have never been there.
Was thinking New Orleans, but both kids are teenagers and if you don't drink, like seafood, or to shop for antiques, not sure they would be so impressed with the city. I love NO, but there are many other places to see. Will check it out. PS I love Memphis BBQ. |
New Orleans & Key West (if it qualifies).
|
Savannah--because it produced my delightful daughter-in-law and her wonderful family.
|
Chester, VA because over fifty years ago people, in what was then a small town, showed me how wonderful it was
to live in a rural area of Virginia and enjoy country life. |
Staunton, VA, Mt.Airy, NC, Beaufort, NC, Wilmington, NC, Beaufort, SC.... wonderful places, all different
|
Charleston, South Carolina. Hands down. :)
New Orleans is next, for all the reasons stated and then some. I like Savannah, but it doesn't quite resonate for me the way Charleston does -- no clue why. But it's still great. Asheville, NC is a runnerup pick, though best in the autumn, IMO. ~Elizabeth |
RB_travelerxTyahoo: your answer made me laugh out loud. Only a Philadelphian (or in my case an ex-Philadelphian) would appreciate that answer.

Hey, radiofanatic! I opened this thread to reply that my fave southern town is Roanoke, VA, also my hometown! If you'd like to email me (betsy at speakeasy dot org), we could compare notes.

Southern town? Madison, GA
Southern city? Savannah, GA Favorite city in the South? Asheville, NC For a Southern feel in Florida, the town where "My Girl" was filmed. I stayed in the B&B which was the home (and business location) of the funeral parlor owner. Loved walking around that little town. Anyone know the name? |
