On last thing it is revisionist history that has led you to know absolutly nothing about the American overthrough of Hawaii. ...think this was History Man's point
|
rick - Thank you for the revisionist history lesson. If your highest authorities are Saddam and Bill Clinton (i dont know which one is worse) then you have big problems. Do you think that the majority of common Hawaiians really benefitted from having a monarchy and the ridiculous kapu system. If anything, they were probably thankful that they were liberated by westerners. Do you think you should be executed just because your shadow falls on a chief (a kapu)? No wonder there were no tears shed over the demise of the monarchy. Overthrowing a bogus monarchy is what the revolutionary war was all about.

The system of kapu had ended prior to US overthrow of the Hawaiian Monarchy. and most of the Hawaiians didn't care, because they were dead from the white man's diseases!

I think Carol's question is a good one and having just returned from Kauai & the BI I have a genuine answer. For me, it was the Hilo Hawaiian. It was very old, common areas were dirty, not maintained properly, and the plumbing was wierd. You could hear toilets flushing and showers running all night long.

WOW, this posting has gotten really interesting. We went from the worst hotel in Hawaii to the Hawaiian Monarchy.

There were many tears over the annexation of Hawaii. Some simple reading would help you to understand that. I can't provide all of your background for you. I know Caucasians that wore black arm bands the day Hawaii became a state. They recall everyone doing this!

Go to the Smithsonian library in Washington D.C, letter after letter from Hawaiian families,
Petitioning the U.S government stop occupation are documented from over a century ago. They did not gain democracy when the queen was over thrown. Sanford B Dole (a man who use to shackle his workers, in the tropical sun) was imposed upon the Hawaiians. Many rules such as requiring a written English competency, something about excluding plantation workers (now who do think the Hawaiians were!) from voting, lasted for decades.

Too much history... you have to read.

While you are passing judgment on Kapuu you just remember the type of unabated lawlessness that took part in the development of the American west 100 years after kapus. Kapus were a system of Law. The kapu you were talking about was probably a way to protect against assassination. Also it was Queen Kamehameha's wife who had far more power than any of her U.S female contemporaries. The royal woman defied kapu for years, she finally did this at a public gathering, the sky did not fall this kapus was lifted putting other kapus into question. REMEMBER THIS WAS THE 18th Century. Measure this against the Salem witch trials, slavery, lynchings that happened in the south in this century, G.W blocking a UN resolution on TORTURE, this week!!!
and I think you can't argue that Americans have a greater sense of humanity.

Thats it for me, kind of tiring when you don't respond with facts. Really easy to just say "Bill Clinton", "Sadam Husan" well pick my nose I don't like them. Fact remains the international community started to talk about what was perpetrated on Hawaiians and that matters!! Reparations are much further along now then they were before this act. Actually there is a UN delegation of Native Hawaiians meeting this month.
I am sick of hearing you self-hating westerners whine about how the poor Hawaiians got taken advantage of. Becoming a state was the best thing that could have ever happened to the Hawaiians. Why dont you look at the state of some of the other islands in the region.

If you hate yourself for some weird reason (like watching too much TV), please dont try to impute this to the best country in the world. The things that are bad about the US are because of people like you. I wish you would go and live in some 3d world hellhole for a couple of years and learn the value of western civilization. You obviuosly do not have any experience in the real world. In short, you are probably a liberal. Bill Clinton and his ilk need suckers like you.

this is getting as interesting as SF vs San Jose, best pizza in NYC and flippers. yAWnnnn

Note to Smarter (and other fools): Actually, you're quite stupid! If it weren't for the United States' "invasion," then most of Hawaii would look just like the Caribbean!! Need I say more? NO!!!!
