Ms Go, you will be so close but so far away :D Wave and I will wave back ~ bakerstreet, I will think of you because that is where I would rather be :) Budman, what fun it must be at your house around dinner time when you cook :D ducking turkey parts, dodging cans.. |
Easy, can't see no Yountville on your list, don't make me worry woman!
Methinks after all that eating you ask santa clause for a gim membership :) |
Only travel will be to airport to pick up son after first trimester at college.
Having booked February trip to Florida with daughter and April trip to London with 76 year old mother and same 14 yer old daughter, can not afford to go anywhere except to supermarket to buy food to feed son who says he is starving to death on college food. (It is because of losses like Jersey's that made me finally book the London trip my mother and I have been talking about for 5 years!) |
Faina! You're so right!
I've got an entry on my calendar for Friday - BUT can't go to that family gathering! HAVE to go to Yountville!!!! Thanks a lot! I'd been headed for the wrong place! |
Dh and I and our younger two kids will be here at home. Oldest dd is in college in Missouri, but will be going to a friend's house for Thanksgiving. I can relate to the college food complaints!
Our church always has a turkey dinner for our annual business meeting, which happened last week. Dh has requested ham for Thanksgiving, which feels...wrong somehow...almost sacrilegious! :-) So we'll have ham, cornbread/sausage/pecan dressing, baked sweet potatoes, some kind of green veggie...I'm not sure what else yet. Dh wants Waldorf salad. Low-carb pumpkin pie and a regular pecan pie for dessert. Any suggestions on what wine to serve with a spiral-sliced ham glazed with that sweet-spicy stuff? Lee Ann |
Jersey,
I'm so sorry for your loss. Thanksgiving is BIG for us this year. When we were in California, every year my Mom, Dad, and brother would fly out for the big holiday, and we'd take in a couple of stray friends or acquaintances who didn't have family nearby. This year we're in a big new house, closer to DH's family and my extended family. SO, I'm feeding 25 people this year!!! I'm excited because it's the first time both sides of the family will be together since our wedding over 10 years ago. I'm nervous because we're still under construction. All of DH's family is staying with us FOR THE WEEK (15 in the same house), including two kids with life-threatening food allergies, MIL who won't touch anything with garlic, BIL who won't touch anything with onion, and two all-around picky eaters. Try planning meals for this bunch! |
Having a relaxing day at my daughters with family and than the next day celebrating my daughters birthday. Have all of a ten minute drive.
And my daughter and I do not have to roast the turkey. My dear son-in-law who is from Rome and a great cook started doing this his first Thanksgiving here and it is fantastic! Much better than my roasted turkey! Happy Thanksgiving everyone. |
Usually my family goes to Vegas for Thanksgiving--might as well escape cooking and washing dishes! But since we already went so many times this year, we're going to Burta's (another fodors poster) and trying to replicate the salad at Hugo's Cellar.

First time in Hawaii in an autumn month. Will be at Thanksgiving Dinner Buffet at Orchids Restaurant at Halekulani on Waikiki Beach. It's the biggest splurge I've ever done for Thanksgiving. This is the only time all year Orchids does a buffet, and it's supposed to be fantastic. I'll be thankful to be in such a beautiful place, thankful for the good fortune in life (mainly hard work!) that enables me to be there, and for my wonderful dinner companions.

We're gathering with extended family at B&SIL's house in Napa for Thanksgiving Day dinner(as we have done for something like 18 or 19 years.BIL is a Napa fireman who cooks a fabulous turkey. We all have our assigned places&favorite dishes we bring. My inlaws are immigrants who love Thanksgiving as it is the first real U.S. holiday they ever celebrated. Even with all our respective quirks(and there are some big ones) we all seem to have a wonderful time. Somewhere in the course of the evening the kids roughhouse and every year someone ends up crying. Ahhhh ritual!
The next day SO and I motor over to Yountville for the Fodor's GTG. Libations will be plentiful and the company great fun. So very much to be thankful for. Happy TDay everyone. |
Yes, Pam, so much to be thankful for!

Wednesday afternoon's messages altered our plans:
SO's fifth grandchild was born a bit earlier than planned and my buyer's want to "settle" on 2 December viz 20 or 21 December. We'll both be working: she helping with the new addition in Austin and I with packing in Dallas. Enjoy the event, and R5, do open that '74 Martha's. M |
Hello,
jersey - so sorry for your loss. My dear sister was taken from cancer at age 51 and I stll miss her so much. It changed how I live and see things. I try very hard to not sweat the small stuff. Our family is very spread out. We just came back from a lovely visit with my mum who is 85 this week and lives in the UK. We now live in the Midwest and will fly out to San Diego for Thanksgiving to be with one of our son's. Just the three of us. Haven't seen him since last Christmas. Sandy |
We're off to Paris for this year's edition of Beaujolais Nouveau. ;)

My sister-in-law and her roommate cook dinner every year. They'll tell us to come over around 2:00, then they'll serve dinner five hours later (they move in slooooowwwwww moooooootion). My husband will keep asking when dinner is ready because he'll be all gung ho to go deer hunting. My father in law will tell us the same stories for the 1,000th time. My mother in law will get tipsy, and then get snippy. My mother will get extremely impatient with my poor father as he fumbles to change her oxygen tank. My youngest sister-in-law will sit on her butt, tell her husband what to do (and he'll do it). Uncle Paul will tell dumb jokes from the minute he walks in until he leaves. Football will be blaring from 3 television sets. My husband will annoy all of his sisters, and you will hear "shut up" a million times. The kids will rummage through Aunt Cathy's room while she takes five hours to serve dinner.
I will drink a lot of wine and watch "the show." I'll get up and wash the million dishes they use to prepare dinner (no dishwasher in this house), because no one else will get up to wash the dishes. I will drink more wine while washing dishes and sing Christmas carols very loudly to annoy everyone. A fun time will be had by all. Happy Turkey Day everyone! |
LOL, BuffaloGirl! Sounds like a more realistic day than the Norman Rockwell that is so often painted.
I guess that Thanksgiving is always such a big day for movie theaters is that after the big family brawl everyone heads to the theater to enjoy the new movie and not have to talk to each other for a few hours! |
Traditional Southern Turkey Day dinner...with DRESSING - no stuffing (in the bird)!
|
Buffalo Girl and rbtravelerX, you ROCK. Thanks for telling it like it is.
:D |
Lawsy BuffaloGirl! Sending a big bottle of pinot grigio your way.
MizScarlett I will most certainly wave to you and your family on Thanksgiving Day! Mr. GoTravel wants a smoker for the camping trip for the Thanksgiving Turkey breast. He also wants to steam oysters (throw them on the grate over the fire with a wet towel over them and they steam open). I just can't wait to see how this disaster unfolds. |
