What are the "Must Do's" for St. Louis?
 

My husband and I are going to St Louis to see The Police in concert. We;ll be there from a Sat to Tuesday - what are the "must See" or "Must do" things? Also - what restaurants (not pricey) would you recommend?

If at all possible do the Arch first part of the day, especially if it is summer or warmer weather times. After around 11am it gets stifling in there. I mean HOT, not ac or circulation. Few people warned us and if you have claustrophobia or need to get out quickly, in crowds, you won't. It's different than you think it will be. Not to deter you, just so you are aware.

St. Louis is friendly and full of great sports fans. Not far are some wineries as well, if you are interested.

I think the Police are coming July 2..is that right? If so, it wil be HOT here. JJ5's advice about the Arch needs to be heeded. Only go up first thing in the morning.

The zoo is always fun, and free. Just up the hill is St. Louis Art Museum, also free except for special exhibits. Both are in Forest Park along with the Missouri Historical Society. If it's hot, these inside places may be just right.

Many find the AB Brewery tour interesting. And, free beer.

It will be easier to tell you about restaurants if we know where you are staying, things can be kind of spread out. Also easier if you tell us what kinds of foods you enjoy eating.

There is a funny thread right now on the Fordorite Lounge about St. Louis. You should take a look and hopefully it won't scare you too much!

I thats the date then don't listen to me about the Arch. The VIP Fair will be going on and downtown will be a zoo!

Please tell us what part of town yo uwill be in. It will be easier to suggest restaurants then!!

The Museums at Forest Park are fabulous. You could have lunch at The Boat House which overlooks teh Lake/pond . IF it is not too hot you can rent a little boat and explore that way. It is left over from the 1904 WEorlds Fair.


I thnk a brewery tour would be great on a hot day!!

Hello rchiarelli, I do not know what your interests are but you might enjoy going to the Basilica of St Louis which has the most mosaics in the world. I believe it is located in the Forest Park area. Admission is free of course since it is a cathedral. Here is one website to give you the idea of the beauty of this cathedral.

It rivals any Cathedral that I have seen in Europe. The mosaics are mesmerizing!! It is near great restaurants. Balabans ( under new mgmt) Bar Italia, Zoe's PanAsian, and more .... I like Kopperman's for breakfast or lunch.

Hi annesherrod, I am glad you approve of my suggestion as I love mosaics which is one reason I have been to Revenna, Italy more then once. It is always difficult to know what other peoples interest are however.

I am sorry to say I have not been to St. Louis but I have two different friends that were born and raised there and one friend in particular has told me so much about your cathedral, now a Basilica, and I do hope to visit it one of these days. IMO everyone I have know from St. Louis has been a joy. The other area I have always heard about is The Hill (is that the correct name?) which is suppose to have some very good Italian restaurants.

You can't go wrong eating on The Hill.... Cunettos, Zia, Favazzas (in order of preference). Our fav restaurant is Sidney Street Cafe-- fairly small place in a historic building, resv necessary on Fri or Sat night.

VP Fair changed its name to Fair St. Louis several years ago. It has not been making much money over the last few years and the schedule seems to be shorter this summer. check out http://celebratestlouis.org/site/ for more info on dates, times, and performers. This Fair was once billed as America's "biggest" Fourth of July event, but I think that was always an untruth.

We always eat on The Hill. Good Italian food with good prices.

Rent bikes at the Steinberg Ice Rink and cruise around Forest Park. 6 miles around perimeter and lots of paths winding through the park.

While there, visit the zoo and art museum, or maybe the science center.

The City Museum, downtown, is unique, but it's not a museum. It's a.... it's a....creativity explosion.
