Seriously, I'm curious as to what motivated you to visit Nantucket. I agree with 'to each his own' but was wondering why you would pick a place to visit that is known for things that don't seem to appeal to you. Perhaps it was for a family function, etc. and you did not choose the destination?

Off season attracts me. There is a quiet calm sense to the island, that perhaps is easily missed during high season. I actually had hoped to visit during high season this summer with our hound, but the price of car, and accomadation were out of control at Cottages on the Harbor Woof friendly units. It is a glorious destination, but off season appears to be the time to really ":get it". Sorry you missed the opportunity to appreciate it. New England has such a small season that off season always seems better!

Undoubtedly there are cheaper ice cream cones in Branson or Gatlinburg, j, so may you would "get it' there.

You are absolutely correct, wliwl. But there was no explanation as to the reasons for his lack of enjoyment in the OP's msg. Therefore, it was only a "rant", that was of no use to others who are (to use your words)"looking for travel info".

I've asked multiple times now why you chose to visit Nantucket when the things you disliked were things that seemed to be obvious qualities of Nantucket (which you should have known about with even minimal research). Care to respond?

I believe that the OP posted a message in August that said the visit was for "business/pleasure". I, too, was curious about the reason for visiting Nantucket to begin with and found the original posting. To the OP, I am sorry that you didn't like Nantucket. Like some people who have responded, my DH and I are frequent visitors to the Island. We've been going there regularly since the late 80's. I've seen a lot of changes on the Island (some of which I don't like), but I still find many reasons to go back. I would suggest, like others have said, that you try it again in off season if you want to give it another chance. Personally, what keeps me going back is the natural beauty of the Island beaches, the sense of being far away from the mainland, and the smell of the "rosa rugosa" that is everywhere when you get outside of Town and explore the Island.

Hi Marie--by any chance is rosa rugosa the Latin name for beach plums? Our first visit to Nantucket in 1977 was my first exposure to the glorious scent of beach plum flowers, and smelling them is one of our treasured experiences every year on the Cape!! However, my association to the smell always goes back to that first time on Nantucket.

Yes, socialworker, they are the same thing! While I also associate them with the Cape, they seem (to me) to be even more intense and beautiful on Nantucket. There is a trail off of Madaket Road (Ram's Head Pasture) and when you get to the end, you walk through the the beach plums to a spectacular ocean view. The smell of the beach plums in full bloom combined with the ocean view is incredible.

Nantucket is a nice island but very much a rich person's place. Martha's Vineyard is more fun to me.

On the other thread, I simply wondered whether you were really new as there are many people who like to reinvent new screenames and then troll for trouble. But I don't suppose you'd know anything about that, right? In fact, if you actually did read through this thread, you would have found that there were quite a few sarcastic and mean-spirited posts. My question in comparison was quite reasonable.

j_999_9, That was really uncalled for. I only asked the question multiple times because while you posted follow ups anwering other folks, you didn't respond to me. Obviously not a requirement, but I was curious. In fact, I personally think that given that your trip was for business justifies your complaints. I didn't see why you would choose to visit Nantucket given that you seemed to dislike so many of the things for which it is known. However since we now know you didn't actually choose to go there but were there for business, that explains some of it. You were not at fault for not doing research, you were simply visiting a location that you probably would not have chosen on your own.

It only makes sense that we are less likely to enjoy destinations that are chosen for us than those which we hand pick with our own interests and preferences in mind.
