Waiting to Exhale in Savannah, GA
Hi there I have been giving the task of planning a trip for 7 ladies and we will be traveling to Savannah, GA on May 20-22 for a relaxing weekend. We are interested in some great African American restaurants and tours , as well as, a great spa in Savannah. We are all 40 and over and deserve this break. Can anyone help me with this task of finding this information for my ladies?

Stay at the Staybridge Suites on Bay Street.
Why African American restaurants? Tour the First African Baptist Church - http://www.theoldestblackchurch.org/ The Gullah tour stops there - http://www.savannahtours.us/?event=o...l&offerId=4693 Maybe the spa at the Westin in the river? http://www.westinsavannah.com/HeavenlySpa |
Ladies!
I suggest contacting Day Clean Journeys (daycleanjourneys.com) for a first rate African -American history experience in Savannah. Jamal is very entertaining and knows his stuff! |
thanks for the replies. I can not pull up the Day Clean Journeys website but maybe i can call them. I just want a nice spa for the ladies. Do anyone know of some good soul food restaurants.

Not strictly soul food, but you ladies might enjoy some good old fashioned southern cooking, having lunch at Mrs. Wilkes. We ate there and it was wonderful. No reservations, so arrive early. Seating is communal and 21 dishes were passed at our luncheon. It's a fun experience and the food is very good.

Will enthusiastically second starrs's recommendation to visit the First African Baptist Church. Excellent tour there.
Also will happily second Giovanna's suggestion of eating at Mrs. Wilkes -- wonderful meat and three type fare served up family style. It's only open M-F for lunch from 11 am to 2 pm and cash only. It's a good idea to get there ca. half an hour ahead near the head of the line, as the line can get long there. Also consider visiting the Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum, a worthy Black history museum with particular emphasis on local issues. |
I second Mrs. Wilke's. Here's a couple of soul food places for you. Nevaea has good fried chicken.
Mosada Cafe and United House Prayer for All People @ 2301 West Bay St., Savannah, GA 912 - 236 - 9499. Mrs. Wilke's @ 107 W Jones Street, Savannah, GA 912 - 232 - 5997. http://www.mrswilkes.com/ Neighborhood Soul Cafe @ 504 1/2 W 42nd Street, Savannah, GA 912 - 234 - 5081. Nevaea Soul Food Restaurant @ 2705 Bull Street, Savannah, GA 912 - 232 - 3319. |
Thank you to everyone for your suggestions and I can not wait until we get to Savannah, Ga this weekend. I will let you know what suggestion we were able to use.
