UNITED TO HAWAII-Anyone getting nervous?

Is anyone else holding tickets on United for Hawaii? We're scheduled to fly Sept.22 from O'Hare. The more we hear on the news about their financial struggles, the more nervous we get! We'd booked a package through Expedeia...flight, car and hotel. I just hope they can stay afloat a little longer.

I wonder if we should come up with a back-up plan for vacation?????

USAirways filed for CH 11 bankruptcy - are there still USAirways planes in the air?

Stop panicking. If they do file for bankruptcy, they won't disappear off the face of the earth.

Some articles say they would probably make the move by the end of the year. I sure hope they can hold out by then. Once they file and begin restructuring, that's when the flights begin getting cut. We have 2 other flights coordinating with the Hawaii flight. And of course, all is already paid for.
I have vouchers for 2 free tix on United. They're good till next July, but now I'm wondering if I should use them soon. Hubby says if they file Chap 11 they may not honor them.

Anyone have any advice?

Debbie Aug 14th, 2002 05:02 AM

It's certainly a possibility. I'd start snooping around for a fun get-away somewhere for fall.

Dick Aug 14th, 2002 05:19 AM

Debbie,

I wouldn't be overly concerned.

If UAL files chap 11, it may cut some flights.
But you are flying out of Chicago, one of their hubs, so I would expect your flight to stay. Other flights(even previous non-stops) may be routed through Chicago. Even if they cancel your flight, they wil just reroute you.

I too am holding UAL tickets for September(not to Hawaii) and I'm not worried. I used FF miles to upgrade and I just don't want to lose the upgrade.

My husband and I are flying from Manchester (UK) into Phili begin of Sept touring amish & Virginia. Bit worried will we have a plane? a Pilot?(Joke) but seriously keeping fingers crossed we will get to USA ok and more importantly, get home!!!

Debbie Aug 14th, 2002 05:55 AM

Anne,
I guess all we can do is wait and see.

But to change the subject a bit...will you be visiting the D.C. area while in Va? You don't want to miss all the wonderful sights in the nations capital!

Katie Aug 14th, 2002 06:48 AM

Debbie, don't worry about it. There is no way United is going down, imo. We have first class seats for May '03 to Kauai and haven't given it a thought. BK is a way for United to get concessions out of the pilots, the flight attendants and the machinists/ramp workers unions. Relax and look forward to your trip.

What is wrong with everyone? They are one of the largest airlines in the WORLD! Even if they do file Chapter 11, it is to restructure the debt. They will keep flying. And to the person with the free voucher, it will still be good if they file Chapter 11.

Debbie Aug 14th, 2002 10:15 AM

I'm beginning to feel a little more secure.

We had booked our package deal months ago, and United has already changed our flight once. I have been dreaming of this trip for soooooooo long!

Only Tahiti could be better....

beachbum Aug 14th, 2002 10:27 AM

you know, Debbie, Hawaiian Airlines flies from Honolulu to Papeete!!

Dick Aug 14th, 2002 10:35 AM

Debbie,

Relax, take a valium or have a drink(your choice)...you are getting yourself nervous needlessly.

Even if there is change in flight(due to change in aircraft or other reason) UAL would book you on another flight in the same class of sevice.

according to Dow Jone Business News

Dow Jones Business News reports that a bankruptcy court Monday authorized US Airways Group Inc. to pay its employees' pre-petition wages and benefits during a hearing on the carrier's first-day motions.
Judge Robert G. Mayer of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Alexandria, Va., signed an order approving those payments at the hearing.
The article notes that US Airways, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection late Sunday, also won court approval to honor its customers' pre-petition tickets and frequent-flier miles.
Debbie - United changes flights all the time!! It's their SOP. When we went to Hawaii in '00, they must have changed our flights 6 times. It's a not to worry. Relax and look forward to your trip. I'm so jealous. 274 more days for me.

Dick Aug 15th, 2002 06:28 AM

Just a side note.

When United changes aircraft your seat assignments may change also.

If where yo sit is a priority, you should check on occasion to make sure your seats are still the same.

Debbie Aug 15th, 2002 07:42 AM

Yikes! Why do they change the flights so frequently on United? I've never had this problem with Delta or Airtran.

I didn't even think about my seats!

I'm going to give them a call today...office work will have to wait.

what a spaz Aug 15th, 2002 07:56 AM

Would someone PLEASE give Debbie a valium. What a spaz!

We have seats to Hawaii on United leaving Sept 13th. The United Hawaii flights are among the most profitable routes for United. After Sept 11th last year, the Hawaii routes were among the 1st back up. Relax and count the days to the mai tais!
