Scarlett, your post reminded me that last night they had a show on the History channel about the great hurricane of 1938 that struck New England. I had never heard such detail about that horrible tragedy before - so sad, and they didn't even know it was coming!

This holiday weekend we are taking our youngest child, DD, to her first dorm for her first year in college. Mixed emotions, and mixed blessings! :)

We had a great outdoor party planned on Saturday with tent, catering and all and have, just this morning, decided to cancel due to weather. I mean, I read/hear that it could potentially rain 5-6 inches and we, on the coast (LI Sound) could have 40-50 MPH winds! Bye, bye tent!! Created a massive problem for us as well -- between having to contact 65 people and eat a substantial deposit. Boo... im bummed. :(

michelleNYC Aug 31st, 2006 11:32 AM

Grrr.... I had a guest coming from Boston to NY for the party who is now asking me to pay for her non-refundable ticket!! This non-party is going to cost me more than if we had the party! I should have just left it on and let everyone fend for themselves in the rain and wind! Ha! X(

Oh my, I'm sooooo boring!!!! LOL Staying home but will hit the plant nursery to get some plants for a rental house we're fixing up. Need to start doing something with the landscaping. The Rib Cook-off is going on over in Sparks right now. It actually started yesterday, they had so many people last year..close to 500,000 attending, that they added another day. We're going to hit it this afternoon about 4:00, so hope I beat the crowd. WE MAY just have a shot at a parking place. I have no intention of trying to get NEAR that place Saturday or Sunday. So, I'm just going to NOT set the alarm, and putter around. When I was younger I would say MESS around, but now it's putter!!! Hmmm.....LOL

Michelle, are you really going to do that ... re-imburse your friend's ticket? I think she's asking a bit much of you. We all take a chance, when we make plans and buy tickets, that things can change! So sorry you have to cancel your party ... we're starting to get it in Raleigh, as we speak, and it's going to get worse!

michelleNYC Aug 31st, 2006 12:49 PM

I don't know, Bonnie. I was actually pretty surprised that she would even ask! I mean there was nothing that we could do and I would rather be safe (dry) than sorry. Ticket apparently was only $216 so if I have to... I have to. Now that I've gone through all this, it BETTER rain!!

AnnMarie_C Aug 31st, 2006 01:00 PM

I thought non-refundable tickets could be re-issued up to a year with a $100 change fee?

AnnMarie_C Aug 31st, 2006 01:04 PM

Make that $100 change fee plus the difference in fare.

Michelle, I'm so sorry your party had to be cancelled! Let it rain, let it rain, let it rain!

I'm stuck working but the DH is going to the Upper Penninsula with his son, sigh...

A cheeseburger and vodka tonic should help ease the pain.

LoveItaly Aug 31st, 2006 01:56 PM

MichelleNYC, I can't believe that a friend or even a family member would request that you pay for their unused airline ticket. To offer to because you wanted to for whatever reason.. but to ask you to. The gall!! Unless it is some very unusual circumastance I would be livid.

I am sorry that some of you are having your weekend plans cancelled due to the weather. Stay safe everyone and try to enjoy your long weekend no matter what! ((R))

karens Aug 31st, 2006 02:06 PM

We've got plans to stay with friends in Ocean City, NJ. We won't cancel even though the weather looks miserable b/c Sunday night we have tix to see Carlos Mencia at the Borgata.

Dee dee dee.

Sumbum - I loved Silver Falls SP!

BayouGal Aug 31st, 2006 02:24 PM

Michelle, tell that friend to come on!! Don't let her/him waste that ticket, and at the same time she/he can enjoy the same lovely weather you'll be enjoying! :-D

Seriously, I'd say to come on over!:)

We're going to Baltimore for a little anniversary getaway. Somewhat disheartened by the weather ("wind-driven rain" and "a soaking rain" forecast per a couple of different weather websites), we're still looking forward to trying new restaurants, visiting the art museum, and seeing the aquarium that we've heard so much about (reservations already made for Sunday).

BayouGal Aug 31st, 2006 03:14 PM

blrn1, there is a thread paging you - regarding your trip.

laurenzo Aug 31st, 2006 04:34 PM

We are headed to Bass Lake for some boating fun with a another family. Weather should be nice- mid 90's. It will be a nice, relaxing getaway after the first week of school. My feet are sure tired!!

EnricoIV Sep 3rd, 2006 02:09 AM

I'm sitting beachfront on the Oregon coast.

After expecting to arrive to some nice, cool weather ... much to my surprise I arrived to temperatures in the 90s!

Fodorite018 Sep 3rd, 2006 07:14 AM

Wow Enrico! Where are you at? The news last night here in Portland said the coast was 70 and that now they will not even break 60. Sounds like you lucked out:)

mrsd2fan, just wanted to let you know that we really enjoyed Dinosaur Bar-B-Que! Because it was a work day for the friends we were meeting, we had no choice but to go later than 6. But our wait was fairly short.

To be perfectly honest, I'm not usually a fan of restaurants as noisy as Dinosaur was. But the food was great, the service was good and, of course, the fact that we were there with old friends made it a very special evening.

mrsd2fan Sep 8th, 2006 12:58 AM

I'm glad you enjoyed it. I did forget to mention that it is a bustling place and can be noisy, I'm sorry you didn't enjoy that aspect. I'm jealous, though that you went...I truly miss home.

EnricoIV Sep 8th, 2006 01:10 AM

>>Wow Enrico! Where are you at? <<

Gearhart.

Luckily, it only lasted a day.
