Think I may cancel my NYC theater weekend

My husband was supposed to come home from Germany 4/18, and we were going to NYC 4/22-4/25. He's been re-booked twice, and is now scheduled to get home 4/26.

Priceline will give me a full refund for the hotel; for $100 per person, the airline will give me a credit good for one year; I'll eat the $90 for our tickets to see Tommy Tune (my favorite performer--his one performace in NY show was the reason for the trip).

My cousin would go to dinner and the theater with me Friday and Saturday nights, and is seeing TT with us Sunday afternoon. I'm not sure I have the energy to contact everyone I know in NY about going to museums with me Friday, the International Center for Photography and a matinee Saturday, the Chelsea Market, Highline Park, and the Rubin Museum of Himalayan Art Sunday.

I just don't know if I really want to take this trip alone. I'm not afraid of any part of it, but don't think it would much fun. Big sigh.

abram, I can't believe the airline is charging you a fee - this is because of an act of nature.

mztery Apr 20th, 2010 05:28 PM

I am guessing the airline is charging because it's a domestic flight that wasn't cancelled or affected.

I' sure it's a tough decision - if oyu decide not to go , check with a ticket broker like stubhub to at least get $$ back for tickets...

abram - go another time. You're not into it right now - and who knows when DH will get home. He'll want to see you there after this major inconvenience.

Sell the tix on stubhub or eBay. Or call the box office and tell them your plight - they might do the right thing.

Hope you make it to NYC soon, with DH! Bummer.

I don't know where you live, but if you love Tommy Tune so much, I'd make the trip alone. You don't need company to go to a museum (or to do anything for that matter). NYC is an easy place to be on your own. Go for it! I'm sure your husband would understand.

abram Apr 20th, 2010 07:03 PM

My husband would definitely understand--and whatever I decide will be fine with him. He's that kind of a guy.

It's just a matter of weighing the positives and negatives and figuring out which decision will be best for me.

Don't you have a girlfriend who would like to go with you?

Aduchamp1 Apr 21st, 2010 05:01 AM

If my wife had tickets for Tommy Tune, and I could not make it, she would have accused me of creating the volcano as a ruse not to see him.

abram Apr 21st, 2010 06:25 AM

I've tried to find a friend to go, but no one is available.

My husband likes Tommy Tune, and enjoys seeing me so delighted.

He's not going to be home anyway so why be miserable at home when you could have your own adventure.

You've also got the Tribeca Art Walk this weekend and the Tribeca Film Festival. I frequently go to these events on my own.

Don't know where you purchased your tickets for TT, but Telecharge has given me refunds in the past when our flights were canceled due to snow storm. All I had to do was show them that the flight was offically canceled. Surely you have some proof that your husband's flight has been canceled -- probably more than once. I have also gone to NY alone and frankly, had a great time. Museums are a wonderful place to wander on your own. I always have a little book or a crossword puzzle in my purse, so that when I sit to dine alone, I feel as though I have something to do. Its actually quite nice. Good luck.

I like SueNYC's point. You're going to be alone any way -- why not be alone in New York instead of alone at home? I find the former way more fun and exciting than the latter.

Be careful however, not to have too much fun. You may find yourself wanting to go off for a weekend by yourself again.

abram Apr 21st, 2010 09:12 AM

I'm not at all miserable home alone--in fact, I enjoy it. There are plenty of things for me to do around the house and around town.

One reason not to go--he's probably getting home Saturday evening, and I'd like to see him sooner rather than later.

Another reason--the $1500 the trip will cost me. The hotel and cabs to/from the airport cost the same, whether there is one person or two.

This morning I was leaning towards cancelling, now I'm leaning towards going.

If you don't have a lot of luggage you could use public transportation to get into the city and save $ on the cab, or see if there is anyone in the taxi queue who would like to share a cab.

I decided to go alone. Then, my husband got on a flight home Friday--I suggested he fly to JFK instead and join me; I could get him on my flight home for less than the credit the airlines gave hiom. So now, he'll be at the hotel when I get back from my museum day! Happiest ending.

I'm so glad for the latest news! Yay!

I was going to write to coax you to go. I just got back from a NYC trip that was 1/2 solo and 1/2 not. I've gotten to the point I LOVE being in the city alone. So much to see and do and I can go at my own pace (breakneck speed at one point, not moving much at another). NYC is the best city to do alone - IMO anyway.

Enjoy your alone time and then your time with DH. Definitely the happiest ending possible :-)

Margo_Chester Apr 22nd, 2010 09:47 AM

Wonderful ending to the story - have a GREAT weekend!

gomiki Apr 22nd, 2010 10:16 AM

I love a happy ending! Have a wonderful time with your husband!

sf7307 Apr 22nd, 2010 10:51 AM

That's great! Now you can ditch centralparkgirl - just kidding :-)

mztery Apr 22nd, 2010 11:05 AM

yay! best of all outcomes!
