I loved spending the day on Makena Beach when the big event was crab watching.
Loved golfing Makena - probably the prettiest pictures of the trip. Loved the zen/ peacefulness of the Maui Prince. Loved the pools at the Hyatt and the star-gazing. (several celebrity sightings) Loved the sliced pineapple. Loved spending the day at the black sand beach on the road to Hana. Loved investigating the little schools and reading the outdoor bulletin boards. Loved the afternoon rains. Loved the smell (flowers, freshness) of the tropical air. |
:-? :-\ I-)

I love it when the Hotel Hana Maui calls me to tell me that they are reducing my room rate by 50% and throwing in a $150 a day credit good for food, massage, drinks, gift shop, horseback riding, etc...YeeHaw

iamq, any chance you have the link to the "What I Love About Oahu" thread you mentioned in the initial post?

What you talkin about, bbq????? Reducing your rate by 50%?? Good for you!((r)))

The reservationist (a very nice woman by the name of Huanani) called me last week and pitched me this deal. She told me that too many folks had been cancelling reservations and they wanted to make sure that we did come, so they made me an offer I couldn't refuse. I was already getting 20% off and free breakfast for being a return guest. They knocked another 30% off and threw in a $150 a day credit! I am saving a huge chuck of change. I feel bad for them that business is so bad, but I am happy as hell to get such a good deal. 30 days!

The silence/isolation of Kipahulu
Ono organic farm tour Hamoa Beach - We had it all to ourselves for hours one morning! My most perfect beach experience ever. The drive "over the top" Piilani highway (the road past Hana) |
Bill,
Are you renting a place in Hana? I think I remember you saying you rent a place on the beach. |
Hi Andrew, we are staying at the Hotel Hana Maui. It is a glorious place that you and steely might like some day. The folks that own Post Ranch Inn run it now and they have taken it back from the brink. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but I love it.
|
I'm familiar with this hotel Bill. Can you swim in front of the Hana ?
I always look forward to your trip reports |
There's no beach at the hotel, but they have a pavillion at Hamoa beach, which is two miles away. They have a shuttle that runs back and forth to the beach a few times a day. It is a gorgeous beach, one of the best in the islands, but the water conditions are more conducive to surfing, boogie boarding and body surfing most of the time.

Thanks for letting me this information Bill. I know you have great taste so this info helps a lot.

Topping for the hell of it so people can update it.

Back to the top for those of you that are planning trips to Hawaii and are being told by friends and others that Maui is too built up, over-commercialized and just like southern California.
Believe it or not I love the cane spiders that you see out in the jungle parts of the island. They are scary looking, but very pretty. I also love the turtles. I love the Keawala'i Church on the coastline in Makena. I love the hearing humpback whales "singing" while snorkeling during whale season. I love the miso butterfish at Sansei in Kihei. I love the Kaanapali Beach Hotel. |
Leaving in 2 weeks!
|
Two weeks!?! =-O
One hundred three days for me. 8-} Wave to the whales for us. Please come back to this thread and tell us the things that you loved about Maui this time around. |
I think we will be too late for the whales, mid May 2014.
|
I love watching the Kansas Jayhawks play basketball in a gym the size of my high school gym! Rock Chalk!
I love walking on the path in Kaanapali and having breakfast while watching the whales jump. I love eating at the tacky/touristy Cheeseburger in Paradise on the second floor overlooking the ocean. I love sitting on the beach with a pina colada in my hand watching my beautiful daughter parasail and have the time of her life. I love the family pictures we have of my entire family walking on the beach at sunset. |
I second Cheesburger in Paradise, the burgers are good. I love having brunch at the Swan Court at the Hyatt. I love driving to Paia for a stroll though the shops and galleries. I have some pieces from Maui Hands that I've had for years. I also go to Makawao and visiting Sheri Reeves store. She's a wonderful artist and some of her things reflect that..very expensive, but she also does little things like refer magnets and T-shirts.
I usually have missed the whales, but on my last trip I was early enough to see some and what a thrill...a mom and baby were swimming close to the shore line one afternoon, so wonderful to see. |
Three months for us - I'll let you know what the Pickles liked when we get back. :-)

Just back and here is what I loved:
Staying in a condo in Wailea with a panoramic view of the ocean.. Morning walks along the beach walk. Keawakapu Beach. Snorkeling at Elua and Mokapu beaches. BIG turtles! Lunch at Mama's Fish House. Very special. The crispy pork belly Loco Moco at Da Kitchen in Kahalui. Shopping and snooping in Makawao. Dinner at Migrant. The Kapa exhibition at Maui Arts and Cultural Center. AMAZING. https://www.mauiarts.org/?p=3 Whale watching. Malasadas at Home Maid Cafe. |
Add stargazing, two amazing sunsets and seeing the green flash.
|
>>Snorkeling at Elua and Mokapu beaches. BIG turtles!<<
Cool! We're within walking distance of these two beaches. The rest of the family is going snorkeling at Molokini one morning, but we're going to walk down to the beach and snorkel instead. Lee Ann |
Lee Ann, the rocky point between Mokapu and Ulua is a great snorkeling area. Another spot where we saw turtles and decent coral and fish is rocky area at the far southern end of Keawakapu Beach and the northern end of Mokapu Beach.
We didn't go on this trip, but another favorite place for snorkeling is Maluaka Beach in Makena. It is the beach that the Makena Beach Resort fronts. |
Eggs Benedict ($12)Plantation in Kapalua - Israel is the best waiter.
Any excursion on Hula Girl catamaran. Beautiful boat, delicious food and Heidi, Matt and Inka are the best ! Sitting on the deck at Merrimen's having drinks and puu puu's. Their filet sliders are the best. Walk on the lava rocks in Kapalua. Mama's -- the best meal ever! Jawz fish taco before a day at big beach Drive past Kapalua to Kahakuola. For the not faint of heart continue all the way to Wailuka. Drive past Makena, through the lava fields until the road dead ends...then hike for as long as you are able. Very beautiful and not many people. Greet the wild goats. Just returned from our 9th trip to paradise. whales, whales, whales...need I say any more? Aloha! |
Welcome back, wekewoody. Lovely reminder of beautiful Hawaii!
|
Unfortunately, wekewoody, that one morning is about the only time we'll have to snorkel while we're there, since we're making plans around my brother-in-law's wedding and reception.

Lee Ann, some of the Molokini snorkel trip leave from Malauka Beach. Find out if yours does and then you could kill two birds with one stone. :)
