The tree is here! The tree is here!

Yeah! This morning on my way to work I noticed that the Christmas tree for Rockefeller Center has arrived. They were unloading it and trying to hoist it on a HUGH crain for placement in the plaza.

For those of you traveling to NYC for the holidays or anytime soon. The windows at Sacks are almost done (99%). I'm not sure about the one at Lord & Taylors though.

There's now a new American Girl Place store right across from Saks and business seems brisk. There was a lot of publicity surrounding the opening of the store.

doc_ Nov 13th, 2003 08:32 AM

Who is Hugh Crain? Or did you mean huge crane?

Margie Nov 13th, 2003 08:35 AM

Hi, if you notice any more windows finished (or close to being finished) will you post back? We will be in the city towards the end of next week and I would like to show my traveling companions the holiday displays. I'm sure that will see some while walking anyway, but if I know that some are done I'll make sure that we pass by. Thanks!

Merilee_Tucker Nov 13th, 2003 08:35 AM

I posted last week that the 79 foot tree was coming from Manchester, Connecticut.

grantop Nov 13th, 2003 08:40 AM

Ok, I don't want to get picky here, but 1) is it that much of a crime if there is a typo in the OP message? and 2) Do you really have to post to make sure you get "credit" for something you MUST have said first?

Glad the tree has arrived, NYC is an exciting place year round, but the holidays are really special.

mcqueeney449 Nov 13th, 2003 08:46 AM

I'm wondering when the tree and window decorations are taken down? My husband and I will be in the city from January 1st to the 3rd. Will any of the holiday stuff still be in place?

doc_ Nov 13th, 2003 09:03 AM

Grantop...You have put far too much thought into the intent of, even I will call it, a poor attempt at humor on my part. There is no intent insult anyone, just having a little fun on a slow day.;-)

easytraveler Nov 13th, 2003 09:18 AM

Hugh Crain - sounds like my brother'-in-law's second brother's third wife's cousin :)

(doc - I took your post as light and humorous!)

andreaac: Thanks for letting us know about THE TREE! THE TREE! So exciting!

You guys are too much, LOL. Doc no offense taken at all. I meant to say "huge crane".

I will take a walk further down fifth tomorrow during lunch and will check on Lord & Taylors' (very windy) outside today). I will also check the other store further north as well. This time of year I generally walk during my lunch hour.

It always seems to amaze me just how the city just seems to come so much more alive with the decorations. Yesterday on the way home, one of the designers was working on the Saks window...I stopped (couldn't help myself)and commeded her on the job...just beautiful work!

jor Nov 13th, 2003 10:15 AM

What a waste of a beautiful tree. Can't they afford a fake one? It would fit in better with its surroundings.

doc_ Nov 13th, 2003 10:17 AM

andreaac...It's always good to know that christmas brings out the youthful enthusiasm in all of us. I suppose watching Rudolph with my kids,or something like that will do it for me this year.
For some reason,I think I offended Grantop. Whoops!

Wednesday Nov 13th, 2003 10:33 AM

Brings up the age old debate: There are two kinds of people out there defined specifically by this topic, ones that buy fake trees and people who will only get real ones. You know who you are :-) It's like smokers and non-smokers....

Merilee_Tucker Nov 13th, 2003 10:41 AM

Message to McQueeney449:
You and your husband will be able to see the tree and its 26,000 lights during your visit. It's there until January 6th.

andreaac Nov 13th, 2003 10:47 AM

Jor,

Your point being? I don't think it's a waste of a tree at all. If someone wants to donate a tree, more power to them. I see many consumers use real trees each year in their homes.

jor Nov 13th, 2003 11:02 AM

andreaac, Yeah baby, here we go with that good ol' consumer (in your words) Christmas spirit! Did anybody ask the tree if it wanted to be cut down and hauled off to NYC?

I'm Joking!!!
I guess some people can't see the humor in things.

Sheryl Nov 13th, 2003 11:11 AM

My husband and I will be in NY at the end of next week, but I had no idea that the Christmas decorations would already be up (or at least partially up). We're definitely stopping by Rockefeller Center and walking 5th Ave., then! Thanks for letting us know.

doc_ Nov 13th, 2003 11:17 AM

Those poor trees. All the wraping paper, boxes, cards etc. They make such a sacrifice for our holiday enjoyment.

I think I see what jor is getting at. We need an environmentally safe holiday for the trees. I think one of the democrat candidates should campaign on that issue.

Wednesday Nov 13th, 2003 12:14 PM

Arbor Day...you can plant them all back :-)

andreaac Nov 13th, 2003 12:27 PM

Cheryl, your welcome. There should be plenty for you guys to see next weekend. I'm note sure MetLife has done their toy display as yet either. Macy's on 34th street is also not too shabby either and might be worth a look.

Doc, okay. I get your joke. I don't mind someone cracking a joke at me every once in a while. Hey, I ride the subway every day for crying out loud...couldn't get more hillarious than that :-)

karens Nov 13th, 2003 12:36 PM

I was in Manhattan Tuesday and the window decorations weren't up in Macy's windows yet. I'm heading back up with my son in December - it'll be his first time in NYC at Christmas.

jersey Nov 13th, 2003 03:11 PM

Is it still standing? The wind is tremendous today. Gusts up to 60 mph. Trees down everywhere. Electricity out in some areas.

PS I love NYC during the holidays.

DawnCt Nov 13th, 2003 04:32 PM

And that tree is from Connecticut!!!

wantsomesun Nov 13th, 2003 08:02 PM

Yes the hurricane today was really dangerous. I heard we had some gusts that were up to 80 miles and hour and LOTS of stuff is just "a blowin in the wind". Glad I did not have to fly today.

The stores are already starting to decorate windows. I did Macy's this afternoon and the windows are up, with a see through cover so you can imagine whtat they will look like with all the lights and the holdiay decorations.

Also some of the stores are going to really extend their hours for the holdiday season. Macy's for example will be open till midnight the last few days before Christmas and close at 7pm on Christmas Eve. I would bet most of the stores in the city will follow Macy's hours.

The tree is indeed here, I saw the report of the tree being taken down and wondered the same thing do we really have to have a live tree each year that is then cut up and thrown away, it's a shame. But I guess we would miss the tradition if it changed. Want to skate under the tree this year have wanted to do that for a long time and promised myself this is the year.

Happy almost holidays......

wemr Nov 14th, 2003 06:33 PM

Buy the Hallmark Carroling Snow Men and everyone will be happy. Women?

vkhunter Nov 15th, 2003 04:38 AM

And I think the tree is from Connecticut...

Elena Nov 15th, 2003 09:48 AM

Most of you probably do not know this closely guarded secret but.....the tree is from Connecticut.
