Symbol of Travel
 

What do you think is one symbol that would best represent the love of travel? I want to get a tattoo that symbolizes my love for travel. The idea I have so far is the stick figure symbol of the Greek God of travel. Can you think of any other interesting ideas? I th ought there would be no better place than to ask a whole bunch of travelers!

What a neat idea for a tattoo....along the same lines as soccr's suggestion I was gonna say something that resembles a visa stamp but instead of the country name in the stamp it could say something a little more personal and the date could be the date of your first ever trip????? I dunno?? lol!

How about hiker symbol combined with a european-style signpost, with the hiker looking at the signpost, as in where to go next?

i've always thought a road is a great sign of travel. view would be from the middle of the road with the road extening to the unforseeable future.

Hermes was the Greek god of travel - sometimes pictured with a walking stick, winged shoes and/or winged helmet. Some courier services use this symbol.

Another option would be Atlas holding the globe.

More obvious symbols are compass/windrose or guidepost.

beach dweller - I have to admit, I just don't get the tat thing. Now that everyone has one, shouldn't it be considered passe' anyway ? If you are trying to be different, I am fine w/that, but to blindly follow the masses, just doesn't speak to me.

Jame, please re-think the tattoo. It may sound cool now in your teens or 20s, but someday you will have to put a suit or dress on and go for a serious job interview and you won't be taken seriously. Frankly, I offered free tattoos to both my kids when they considered it - but only if it said, "I Love My Mom". Gee, no one took me up on that offer!

How about a caricature of something that's one of yoour favorite things, giving it wings.

Like, if your favorite hobby is photography, you could tattoo a camera with wings on it. Or running shoes with wings, or anything else. Probably too corny.

It needs to be somehow classic to stand the test of time. I'm not sure what would, but I don't think roadsigns, backpacks, hitch-hiking thumbs, suitcases... will hold up 20 years from now!

Wings. And if you're brave enough, go for great big ones right where they'd naturally be on your back, with the longest feathers down to your waist.

Nobody will recognize your god. Tattoo "Fodorite" on your forehead.

I think an old style map or compass would be cool - you know, something one of the Portuguese explorers would have used. Simple, elegant, certainly timeless.

I do have a tattoo I got 16 years ago, when I was 23. A small green dragon that only shows when I wear a bikini top or a corset :) I don't regret it at all. It covers up perfectly at the office - I'm a financial analyst.

I like the idea of a compass, but I'm picturing a really cool, ornate compass rose. It's not a flower; Google "compass rose", click on "Image Results for compass rose", and you'll see several. This kind of graphic image will translate well to a tattoo, and the size could be adjusted fairly easily. I'm worried that the god of travel may look a bit gnome-y or leprechaun-y.

I also do not think that a tattoo would make others take you less seriously. This was true once, but now that everybody has them, it isn't true any more. It would take quite the unusual tattoo these days to stand out.

Please spare me the "you'll regret it speech" I wouldn't be getting one if I was not sure I would love it years from now. And to say that people will see it implies that I am putting it where everyone will see it all the time. If you put it some place personal, like on your hip, who else besides me and my husband will see it?
