SUPER 8 MOTELS--in usa

We have been suggested to stay in super 8 motels when we travel to US next month(our first trip).Could some one who has stayed in these motels please comment. Are they good place to stay in San Francisco? Many Thanks

Don't know about the one in S.F., but Super 8 is a motel chain a lot like Motel 6, Best Western, Holiday Inn, etc. Generally, you can count on reasonable rates, a clean room but not much in the way of amenities. However, they can vary somewhat between locations.

If you strictly need an inexpensive place to sleep & shower / bath then you should be fine. However, if you're looking for any sort of amenities you'll be very disappointed.

If Motels were cars, Super 8 would be a Ford. It would get you where ya wanna go but forget the CD and cruise control.

Actually, Dan, I'd say it would be a Kia or Hyundai. Sheraton would be Ford. Middle-range but not spectacular.

My pick among places to stay in the US in motels that are a notch above "budget class" are Fairfield Inns, Holiday Inn Express, and Microtels. Courtyard by Marriott and Hampton Inns are a little higher up the scale, in my opinion.

Super 8 is as indicated a chain. I think the descriptions in the above postings are accurate. I know of some individual units that are fairly nice, such as the one in Moab, Utah.
I would not automatically reject them, because there are variations within brand.
For a brief rundown on budget motel chains in America, take a look at:

http://archives.obs-us.com/obs/english/books/pg/pg508a.htm

In it you'll see reference to discounts given to AAA members; that's our Auto Club and many motels give a 10% discounts on their rates to members.

I found it for you by using my favorite Internet Search Engine, Google, at:

www.google.com

Just type in your key search words on any topic and it gives you good responses.
So, give it a try and use search words:

budget motels

Hope you have a great trip with us; I love California but then I was born and raised here.

Here's California's official website for tourists/traveler's in case you are interested:

http://gocalif.ca.gov/tourism/htdocs/stage_intro_p2.html

It does have a lot of helpful info.

I thought, also, you might be interested in this website as well. Perhaps you will find it useful.

http://www.budgettravel.com/usa.htm

Here's the website for the Super 8 motel chain....not the most user friendly but you can find locations and get prices for specific dates as well as book online.
Since you'll be here next month, it's probably too late for you to request their free directory. However, ask for one at the first Super 8 you use; perhaps they'll have one to give you.

http://www.super8.com/Super8/control/home

Wouldn't suggest staying right in Fisherman's Wharf (too busy and noisy)
or in the centre of SF.

Try the San Remo Hotel, which is an exceptionally clean and reasonable hotel about 5 mins walk F/Wharf, near cable cars and buses. Details at this web-site:

http://www.sanremohotel.com

http://www.sanremo

PJ,
I wouldn't recommend Super 8's to someone visiting our country for the first time. The quality varies a lot depending on location and, being an older chain, many hotels are drab and depressing. We stayed in one (Norfolk, Nebraska) many years ago where the sheets were dirty and obviously hadn't been changed. No more Super 8's for me--ever. I would suggest trying Fairfield Inn's by Marriott. They're lower budget but usually nice. Microtel Inn's also have fairly uniform standards. Generalizing, I know, but truly, I would rethink the Super 8's, Motel 6's (UGH), and Holiday Inns. Enjoy the US!

Super8 and Motel6 are both budget hotels. No amenities (sometimes a small pool), usually clean and safe. I wouldn't and don't hesitate to use them. If you are passing through an area and just need a place to stay the night before heading on again the next day they are great. But, if you plan on staying in an area a few days you might want to upgrade to a better hotel - HolidayInn Express, etc.

As far as Super8 goes, go to there website and sign-up for there Super8 card as it will give you an 10% discount and other perks.

San Francisco Feb 6th, 2002 06:05 AM

Below is the website for the Super 8 Motel in San Francisco which is at Fisherman's Wharf.
For us, San Francisco is a day trip; I know nothing about lodging.
Can anyone help PJ specifically with the Super 8 in The City?

http://www.stayanight.com/super8sfwharf/

PJ...will you be driving a rental car for your trip?

We almost always stay at Super 8's when they are available. They are consistently clean and well maintained, and a good price. Stayed 2 nights at the one in Monterey in 1994. Get a VIP card - you pay a few dollars for it but it lasts forever and you save 10%.

Hey Dan,

Have you seen the new Ford Focus? It gets you were you want to go and I loved listening to my new CD as I crusied down the highway!

iluvtotravel Jun 11th, 2002 09:16 PM

What's wrong with Motel 6? me and my buds are going to sb in a couple of weeks and we have 2 room reserved?
Good/bad comments or any suggestions for other. Sorry, didn't mean to go off topic.
Hey Tony,
Do you really think Super 8 and Motel 6 are in the same league as Holiday Inn and Best Westerrn?

I always thought they were budget places, where HI and BW were moderates.

Also, why does everyone seem to think HI Express is nicer than Hol Inn? Granted the free breakfasts are nice, but Hol Inn's are supposed to be full service, which usually means nicer, right?

Not trying to stir anything up, just really want everyone's opinions. Thanks
We used to stay at Super 8's and Motel 6's whenever we needed a sleepover stop. The only reason we don't lately is that the rooms tend to be smallish and with 2 adults and 2 adult sized teens, we feel cramped.
