Sunsets on East Coast?

Where are the best beach sunsets???

persimmondeb Feb 14th, 2008 09:03 AM

Well, keep in mind that the sun doesn't set over the water in most places. It does rise over the Atlantic, though. Sunrises can be really gorgeous. If you want to see the sun setting over water, you generally need to be facing a bay or inlet. I understand there is a place on Cape Cod where there is a nice beach facing west and great sunsets. Generally the farther north you go, the better the sunset.

The most beautiful sunsets are over Lake Ontario in Northern NY, Oswego to be more precise...but I know that's now what you are looking for...

Madaket Beach on Nantucket.

djkbooks Feb 14th, 2008 09:13 AM

Any island or peninsula with ocean to the west. As mentioned, the sun sets in the west.

wyatt92 Feb 14th, 2008 09:34 AM

Madaket is beautiful! Gay Head on Martha's Vineyard is also gorgeous.

Naples Florida anytime OR Robert Moses State Park on Long Island, NY in early January.... don't laugh. very cold, but very beautiful. The day is so short in early January, that the sun actually sets over the Atlantic ocean in NY.

Not "beach" but I love watching the sun set as I dine on the porch of the Zane Grey lounge in Islamorada in the Keys. The view is of the marina, but the palm trees, the soft cool breeze and the good food. Yes!

Any place you have an island or a peninsula that gets you water on both sides will probably get you a sunset over the water. Likewise, in the times of the year when the sun is very far south, a spit of land with a wide southern-facing beach will give you a sunset.

Many, many islands qualify from Maine to Florida, but you also have capes like Cape Anne and Cape Cod, as well as all of the barrier islands like the Outer Banks -- have seen some spectacular sunsets over Albemarle and Pamlico sound.

And then don't forget the entire Gulf Coast of Florida.

Most of the western-facing beaches on the East Coast are on bays, which aren't usually the best beaches (in my experience). The exception is the Gulf of Mexico.

Nice sunsets can be seen from the harbor islands off of Portland Maine.

Menemsha beach, Martha's Vineyard.

MarieF has it right. Madaket, Warren's Landing, and Eel Point on the west end of Nantucket are my favorites.

Great Point, Wauwinet, and Pocomo Point on the east end of the island are also good.

Jetties or Steps Beach. For a delicious expensive dinner with sunset, the Galley at the Cliffside Beach Club.

Neport, Jamestown, and Block Island in Rhode Island, the North Shore of Long Island, and most barrier islands have nice sunsets.

The entire West Coast of Florida and the Florida Keys from Islamorada to Key West.

Gosh, I have been lucky to have seen so many!

Sunset Baech, NC, hence, the name...

Jimingso Feb 14th, 2008 01:03 PM

Atlantic Beach, NC has a beautiful sunset over the ocean in the Winter.

Parts of Newport that look west over the Harbor are nice. Perhaps Castle Point.

On the Jersey shore both Long Beach Island and peninsula that runs from Point Pleasant to Island Beach State Park have westward views over Barneget Bay, etc.

The one advantage the east coast has are the sunrises over the beach. When I had a house in Bay Head at least a few times a summer I'd get up at sunrise and walk the beach.

Any beach on the Cape Cod Bay side of the island...and there are many wonderful spots. My favorites are Rock Harbor in Orleans, First Encounter in Eastham and Corn Hill in Truro. Actually, one of the reasons we love Eastham on the outer cape is that it is only 3 miles wide from the East side (where the sun rise over the Atlantic Ocean is just breathtaking) to the west side (where folks actually applaud once the sun has sunk down into the waters of Cape Cod Bay.) The sun rise and full moon rise are equally beautiful from Fort Hill in Eastham. We stay at Fort Hill Bed and Breakfast in the National Seashore because we can watch the sunrise over the water from our cottage while we sip our morning coffee! And the stars as seen from the top of Fort Hill will knock your socks off!

I would not recommend the trip for the sunsets, but it can be beautiful from 2 different beach spots in Cape May, NJ.Even off-season, it's amazing to see how many sightseerers can suddenly appear at sunset and just as quickly disappear.

For a great East Coast beach sunset, you've gotta check out Menemsha on Martha's Vineyard. It is a summer ritual to bring the kids, the beach chairs, a few bottles of wine, and pick-up some fresh steamed lobsters from Larson's and then sit back and enjoy the marvelous colors at dusk. Also, for more info on year-round things to do on MV check out www.TicketsMV.com, where you can purchase advance tickets to thousands of island events.

I totally agree with MarieF....Madaket beach on Nantucket

for some images of the sun setting over Cape Cod Bay.

Race Point beach..Provincetown Massachusetts. This is Cape Cod by the way for those not familiar with Provincetown MA.

Fabulous sunsets over the Great South Bay viewed from Fire Island (off Long Island, NY). Fire Island has the GSB on its north side and the Atlantic on its south side - and is only two blocks wide in many places. To add to the magic, there are no cars on the island in season. I spend summers there.

Asheville_Traveler May 23rd, 2008 08:21 AM

"the point" on anna maria island, florida. it's in the gulf of mexico so you can get an AMAZING sunset at the far west side at the end of the island!
