SUGGESTIONS
There isn't a city in this world that I love more than NOLA. Please feel free to pick my brain- I lived there for a while and know little secret treasures that are 100% new Orleans...
|
Yes!
|
Diana-- I'm thinking of going alone. Did you move? Would it be crazy to just go for a day and a half? Or 2? Just want to relax take in new sites, but am uncomfortable with all I heard about crime to go out and around by myself. What would you recommend? Is it too hot now to the end of June?
|
This posting would have been far more helpful had Diana bothered to add the words "New Orleans" to her header.
|
So tell us these little tips...or do we have to email you at your home ?????
Any and all info is appreciated.
Going this summer so hurry.
|
Suggestions?

Response.
|
This is solicitation. Diana wants you to email her and then she wants a fee for her services. Don't be fooled!
|
First of all- I am not a solicitor- I am just someone that has appreciated others suggestions on this site and thought I would give back a little. I am planning my honeymoon and have asked many people for advise. Why are people so cynical!!! And about my header- GET OVER YOURSELF AND DEAL! OK- so about SUGGESTIONS!
JOAN: Would I go alone- well- if it's your only opportunity- YES! If you can go with someone- even a good friend- it's much better- but still - a day in the french quarter is better alone can be an amazing experience, but just be careful at night- don't go wandering the outer boudaries of the by yourself. EVER! Crime in NOLA is something to take seriously- but if youare smart and use common sense you'll be fine.
I did move- living there during college and living there and trying to acutally make a living is dificult- especially after living such a carefree life as a college student as you might imagine! But I miss it every day and wish one day I'll have a home there or an apartment- so I can go whenever!
RE: HEAT- yes- very hot- very very hot- but - whatever- it's just weather.
Make sure to eat at restaurants liek K-Paul's (also a great place to meet people is you are traveling alone cause you sit with other people and be sure to catch preservation Hall at night. Make sure to take the trolley uptown - a great time is first thing in the mornign and stop and have breakfast at Camillia Grill on the corner of St. Charles and Carrolton- The trolley trip is wonderful (especailly if it's not raining!) all the houses are somehting else to see- - don't mss the Wedding Cake House. you could take the Garder District tour- it's a walking tour of all the old houses in that area- SO NICE! and make sure to check out on-line resouces such af OFFBEAT- it's a magazine that I think you can browse ove rthe internet- it'll tell you if there are any festivals that weekend- there are always so many!
If you are into Music ( the reason I went to school there) make sure to check out Tipitina's UPTOWN and the house of blues and maybe try and catch a show- both halls are wonderful! HOB has a great Gospel Brunch on sunday where the music will give you goosebumps and the food will make you stuffed! What else...
OH! Make sure and venture to Esplanade (preferably during the day) and walk around frenchman street- at night there's a great nightlife there- lots of blues, jazz and latin music going on down there! Make sure do all the "TOURISTY" things- even though they are cliche- they are part of what makes up NOLA

I must go- but please feel free to ask me anything else
and you people that have issues- stya off this thing- this is a happy site for people who love to see the world....
|
Diana-- thank you for all the advice-- it sounds great! I will try to figure out a way to get there. I don't think I would go out at night.
As for the board, I've been reading some very nasty comments on many threads here, and have been surprised to see how brutal people can be.
Thank you, I'll be back with more detailed questions when I get more of a plan.
|
Thanks for all the info...you have been a great help...I do think that there have been a lot of mean spirited people on this forum lately from what I have been reading...don't remember it being that way a year ago when I was getting info on Ireland..maybe I just overlooked it at that time or maybe there aren't so many mean people on that particular forum. Regardless, I wish fodors would make people register with their own email addresses..I am actually afraid to use mine anymore for fear of getting mean mail at home..a shame that we have to live that way.
But, thank you again for all your little tips..I am looking forward to having a wonderful trip this summer.

Me-You are one of the WORST offenders here for rudeness, sarcasm and you always have to have the last word. Clean up your own act before you start pointing fingers you hypocrite.

Diana-Perhaps if you had worded your post differently, you would not have been attacked. It really does sound like you are soliciting business.
|
I am sorry that I have riled you up so much..this was the first and only time that I have voiced my opionion about people with rude comments on this forum and I apologize if I offended you. I thought that I said it in a polite way but I guess that I did not..I was only trying to make Diana feel better and did not intend to make anyone angry like yourself..people come here for advice and I just don't understand why others have to be that way..you can be assured that I will not say anymore. Maybe there is another "me" out there somewhere you has made comments in the past. I can assure you that it was not this "me".
I am definitely not the type of person that you referred to me as - just the opposite.

As usual, when some "helpful traveler" parks here and audaciously announces their "authority" on a certain destination, something is rotten. You would think that SOME people travel to N.O. and would like to study a little history of the place, hmmmmm, but notice that she didn't mention Jackson Square, the cathedral, the museums, etc... Of course not, she doesn't make money promoting those things. As always, this "helpful traveler" only wants to point you to her "favorite" restaurants, bars, clubs, hotels and tours -- the businesses that DO pay money for advertising and promotion. So much for the "secret treasures"....just more restaurants!
|
I bet my last dollar Diana is a travel agent.
|
Everything Diana said came straight from a guidebook - no secrets shared at all. Anyone who lived here wouldn't call it the trolley - it's a streetcar.
|
last time i was in n.o. i noticed that many of the larger homes in the garden dist. had these little tiny playhouse-sized structures nearby made to look like the main house. i thought they might be carriage houses (too small) or gate houses (too close). none of the riders on the streecar seemed to know what they were for (mostly college students from tulane). does anyone know?

You forgot BUGS!!!!!!
I hate New Orleans for all the dang BUGS. Bugs in the streets. Bugs in the hotel rooms. Bugs falling from a tree into you lunch when you eat in one of those "charming" outdoor restaurants. EEEEEUUUWWWWW.
|
Well- I think I am done with this site- I am not a travel agent and completely regret ever trying to be helpful- I am sorry that people are so concerned with everyone else's trips, subject header, content information- what have you. Sorry- That my advise wasn't original enough- for first timers- I thought it was adequate. Please forgive me for wasting my time at work and at home and I'll try not to lend a helping hand in the near future. HAPPY TRAVELS!!
|
Oh and one more thing- I NEVER said I was an "authority" on the city. ANd I do apologive for calling the streetcar a trolley- it was a VERY misleading statement and I'll try and watch my catch pharses in the future.
I did go to school in New Orleans and this past May marked 4 years since I graduated and sometimes my mind does slip a Bit!!! OOPS!! Silly me. Thanks to everyone on this site for making this such a FUN place to share- I'll be sure and ask more advise for my honeymoon this coming spring as soon as I can- i love being critized by message boards!! Such Romance!!
JOAN and ME- have fun guys- which I could be there!
Be sure not to get dehydrated in N.O. It's very easy to do, especially if you are going to drink liquor. I partied the first night I was there. (Not heavily, but I had one of those very tall, skinny drinks down on Bourbon...it is a place that looks like it has about 25 Icee machines with all kinds of frozen flavors in them..yum!) The next day I was walking through the 'flea market' down by the water and thought I was going to pass out or vomit. I literally laid down on a sidewalk for awhile...what a sight! (I am well-educated and had a water bottle with me, but I had no idea that I was dehydrated!) The sidewalk was right in front of the old mint, so I went inside and toured/cooled off. I was there in August. I stayed at the Hotel Dauphine which was an older, well-kept place, conveniently located a block or so off of Bourbon. Don't bother with renting a car, the town is very crowded and there is basically no parking. The airport is not close, and the cab fare is probably about $20.00.

There is a voodoo museum not too far from the French Quarter...very interesting...not for little kids.

Stay away from the graveyards unless you are with a tour. Keep a purse tucked under your arm or wear a fanny pack on your frontside. Be cautious, but don't be afraid. People are people, no matter where you go.

Keep your umbrella with you--the sun is hot and the rain sometimes comes fast and hard for a few minutes.

Be sure to go to that place that serves warm beignets....you get a lot of powdered sugar on you, but they are heavenly! I can't think of the name of it...there is a main place and I believe there are a couple of smaller pit-stops, but I am not sure. Brennemans or something???

There is a fun mall....called the River Walk, I think. It's along the Mississipi. It has a fudge or cookie store (can't remember), where all the workers break out in songs every once in awhile..eateries...regular stores..and a few good hot sauce stores.

I am new to this site and think it is great! I am from California and have contributed quite a bit already...plus I travel quite a bit. I have also asked questions about Oregon which have been promptly answered. I don't care if the responses come from inhabitants, visitors or travel agents. If they know about a place and can help me out, then what's the big deal? Am I missing something?
