Stay in Breckenridge?

Thinking about going to Breckenridge for the snow sculptures next weekend and maybe a day of snowboarding. Any cheaper places to stay than what I'm finding online? How far is Silverthorne? Is it cheaper there?

First timers as you can tell :)

Thanks!

fmpden Jan 20th, 2007 08:06 PM

Fisco would be a better choice. Should be able to find something in that area at a lesser rate. Next try Dillon.

fmpden Jan 20th, 2007 08:07 PM

Sorry, it is Frisco -- about 8 miles down the road from Breck.

starrsville Jan 20th, 2007 08:09 PM

Don't know what you are finding online.

We stayed here and loved it -

The snow sculptures are amazing.

ellaphant Jan 20th, 2007 08:28 PM

Frisco is really that close to Breck? We've been to Frisco and I really love it there! I didn't know where it was in relation to Breck! Yay!

However, I'm looking at expedia, etc...and nothing is available for next weekend in our price range. Wah!

starrsville Jan 20th, 2007 08:29 PM

try kayak.com

what is your price range?

ellaphant Jan 20th, 2007 08:33 PM

Ideally, around 100...but it's it 120, that's ok too. I've been seeing things for 170+.

And, I think it may be too last minute to book. Plus, alot of hotels want a 2 night minimum.

starrsville Jan 20th, 2007 08:38 PM

The Summitt County Holiday Inn (Frisco) has a Standard room available for Saturday night (I'm assuming that's the 1 night you want) for $125.10 (AAA rate)

starrsville Jan 20th, 2007 08:43 PM

The Super 8 Dillon/Breckenridge has a AAA rate room for 94.73. That includes taxes.

ellaphant Jan 20th, 2007 08:44 PM

Just found a place in Frisco for 86.99

Super 8 motel in Frisco!

I'm super happy now :)

starrsville Jan 20th, 2007 08:45 PM

94.73 for 2 double beds
88.81 for 1 queen
96.70 for 1 king

AAA rate is usually 10% off - so if you aren't a AAA member, add 10% to price

ellaphant Jan 20th, 2007 08:46 PM

Stars-

We must've been looking at the same site. :)

Thanks everyone for your help- espcially that kayak.com website. Wouldn't have found cheaper prices without it. :)

starrsville Jan 20th, 2007 08:46 PM

Great minds...

ellaphant Jan 20th, 2007 08:51 PM

Yup, AAA- the savings really do add up.

Any cheap places to rent a snowboard? We just need one...and do boots usually come with it?

I've never done it before. Fiance has and he's all set.

Any info would be great! :)

starrsville Jan 20th, 2007 09:17 PM

We used http://www.alpinesportsrental.com/

There's a 20% off rental coupon you can print off from that website.

ellaphant Jan 20th, 2007 09:52 PM

Thanks Starsville! You have a ton of knowledge! :)

CAPH52 Jan 20th, 2007 09:54 PM

Have only been in the area during the summer. But, even then, Frisco is a cheaper choice. My brother, who has gone there many times to ski, always chooses Frisco. And, in fact, is doing so again in a couple of weeks. We always rent a condo through Americana Properties in Dillon.

starrsville Jan 20th, 2007 09:55 PM

We really enjoyed Breck. Went there almost the exact same time (a few years back).

I think you are traveling on a budget, but DO consider taking a lesson. The instructors there are great - and it's easier to learn from a stranger than fiance or SO. Well, from my personal experience and close friends'! :-)

ellaphant --- Breckenridge has installed a new, less than free, parking policy. From Frisco you can take the free Summitt Cty bus system which runs each hour from Frisco to Breck. Breck has nstalled a new gondola system from the middle of the old free parking lots. The parking fee is $10. The "free" lots have been moved further out and are serviced by shuttles buses that take you to the gondola. The gondola is handy for getting onto the mountain will min fuss.

wtm003 Jan 21st, 2007 08:08 AM

Yes, please take a lesson. Three weeks ago, I watched a guy try to give his girlfriend a snowboard lesson. It was scary! He would pick her up and give her a push. She had no control, no idea how to stop and barely missed a tree on an easy slope.

ellaphant Jan 21st, 2007 12:23 PM

Thanks! I'm going to look into lessons, but I don't know if we can book this late.

Additionally, there's a good chance I may have foot surgery in the next few weeks (for something unrealted to any activity!) so I'm not sure if I want to pay for a lesson and then not be able to use it because I can only snowboard for 10 minutes :)

But, I will wear a helmet. Promise :)

ellaphant Jan 21st, 2007 12:29 PM

Can we buy a one day lift ticket? Any discount specials you guys know about? :)

starrsville Jan 21st, 2007 12:30 PM

We went at the same time and we able to arrange lessons when we arrived.

Have you checked the Breck website for rental/ lessons / discount info?

ellaphant Jan 21st, 2007 12:44 PM

I did find discount lift tickets at King Soopers, so I think we'll do that.

I just spoke to fiance about it, and we may look into lessons that day. I thought he was more advanced than he actually is. We may spend all day on the bunny slopes! hehe

wtm003 Jan 21st, 2007 01:01 PM

I think the Breckenridge website shows a one day lesson/lift package for $101. Tickets at the resort are around $80 so the package is a good deal. You definitely should be able to arrange lessons when you arrive. At some of the ski resorts you can get a discount if you reserve lessons or equipment ahead of time.

I'm glad you are wearing a helmet and are concerned with your safety, but just remember a lesson also helps to protect other skiers and boarders. An inexperienced snowboarder ran into my son two years ago. My son ended up being okay but my husband was livid. How would you feel if you slammed into a little kid?

Okay, I'm done with my lecture. Take a lesson and have fun!

ellaphant Jan 21st, 2007 01:18 PM

I have info!

So the Ski and Ride School in Breck offers 1/2 day of lessons plus lift ticket for 91 pp. Lift ticket only is 81.

That really isn't too bad.

Of course, fiance doesn't want to do the lesson now. But, for a ten dollar difference, I think I will. I just have no experience and I really want to enjoy it.

LauraATL Jan 22nd, 2007 09:00 AM

I just got back from Breck.
The single day lift rates:
All Day $81
Half Day (12-4) $60
Late Arrival (2-4) $35
Rental Equipment:
All Day $40
Half Day $25

LauraATL Jan 22nd, 2007 09:03 AM

I will second wtm003. While we were in Breck, a skier was killed (hit in head)at Copper Mtn by a snowboarder. Please be careful!!

philsbert1 Jan 23rd, 2007 10:34 AM

FYI: Look closely at the lift ticket/lesson combo. Though less expensive than purchasing each separately, if you are thinking about skiing the mountain(s) separate from the lesson, keep in mind the lift tickets with the combo are usually limited to certain parts of the mountain(s) or certain lifts...often not usable for the whole ski area.

I've stayed at that Super8. It's a good location for exploring Summit County.
