spam alert
it's time for fodor's to upgrade it security another deluge of spam. either get it together or it's time to move on, there are plenty of travel forums out there.
|
But this is my favorite. I have always received helpful answers to my questions here, and I try to reciprocate.
If you had been with the forum for ten years, you wouldn't be so ready to give up on it. HTtY |
I don't think people want to leave but some are being driven away. Look at the huge drop in US posts - at the same time that the spans are being posted in dozens every day.
There are ways to stop it - fodors just doesn't want to bother. |
wlke: Don't post it here -- There is nothing any of us can do about it. Send your complaint to the editors. Tell them how upset you are and will leave the site if something doesn't improve.
|
It happens every morning. If they would just put a monitor on the board at 6ish and remove it, it wouldn't ruin it for the early risers.
|
Not just the early risers--I live in California and check the forums around 10 p.m., then start clicking on the triangles.
janisj, how do I send a message to the editors? |
add the bottom of the page there is a contact us link and after sending five reports during the week I have gotten no response. they either have the worst software security, or they are in it.it hurts people trying to get help because 5 pages of spam buries them in the queue. so they may get very little or no response.
|
Just click on the triangle upper right and flag it as spam.
|
I just clicked on that triangle for a bunch of posts and got notice my email reports were undeliverable. I havent been on the forum for a while. This is a disgrace.
|
mclaurie: There is an ongoing problem w/ the triangle. Has something to do with either the e-mail address you use w/ Fodors or a specific browser - it seems to be fuzzy which. They are working on it.
But there is no reason really to triangle the mass spam attacks every night -- they are obviously spam and get deleted as soon as the moderators can get to them. Save yourself the frustration . . . |
It really is too bad (and strange) that it seems beyond their technical capabilities to fix it.
But it's certainly not going to make me leave Fodor's forums. Just skip over all the spam, it's easy enough to spot. |
I just right-click on the poster's name, which takes me to their profile page. From there, click the "report this member" link, type "spammer" in the additional comments box, and click submit.

The problem is IF one has certain e-mail addresses they will get a 'bounce back' error message and if they triangle several they will essentially be spamming their own in box. And the alert/abuse report doesn't go through. I think it mostly affects gmail but there are probably others as well. Honestly -- I'd reserve my use of the triangle for advertisements/spam/abusive posts buried on legit threads. Those are harder for moderators to find -- and not waste time reporting the spam threads that are obvious. But NOT if you use a gmail address on Fodors. |
Janis, gmail accounts aren't the problem according to IB - it's yahoo, hotmail and aol accounts that get bounce backs. In any case, this is something that needs to get fixed.
|
I knew I had it confused - :)
Knew it was something to do w/ e-mail addresses . . . |
