SMOKING in SAN Francisco?

Do any restaurants in the San Francisco area
allow smoking?

Thank you!

Nicotine Nancy Aug 19th, 2002 03:47 AM

No. Sorry. You'll have to take it outside.

michael Aug 19th, 2002 04:24 AM

Could Nicotine Nancy tell me if there are restaurants that serve food to customers sitting outside, which allow smoking?

Joe Aug 19th, 2002 05:56 AM

No restaurant in California can allow smoking in any eating areas, street tables included.
Jill Aug 19th, 2002 06:12 AM

I believe this is incorrect information. My husband smokes and we often eat at outside tables where there are other smokers seated. This includes smaller restaurants as well as chains such as Outback Steakhouse (we live in Orange County-Southern California, but I would imagine the smoking laws are uniform within the entire state but perhaps regulated as the owners choose.)

Nicotine Nancy Aug 19th, 2002 06:21 AM

Maybe it does vary a little by county/city. I'm pretty sure that in the entire Bay Area you can't smoke outside when food is present but perhaps someone can correct me on this. In the city of SF, there aren't many "outdoor dining" places I frequent!

Faina Aug 19th, 2002 08:20 AM

Check the restaurants which have brewery on-site. Or sport bars. Must be something where smoking is allowed. Of course our smokers are on the list of endangered species but they can't be extinct.

Larry Aug 19th, 2002 08:26 AM

I've visited both North and South California and there are more outside restaurants in Southern Cal (warmer year around weather) so your choices in SF may be more limited....although I'm sure they do exist.

Barbara Aug 19th, 2002 08:55 AM

It doesn't matter if it has a brewery on site or if it's a sports bar. You can't smoke indoors in a public place, including bars and restaurants, in California. If a restaurant has an outdoor area, smoking may be allowed there, it is up to the restaurant. As others have said, there are fewer outdoor eating areas in N. California than in the south because the weather is cooler and wetter.

Faina Aug 19th, 2002 09:25 AM

OK, here is the website with a list of "smoking allowed" restaurants in San Francisco:

http://www.cigargroup.com/regional/c.../sf-smoke.html

Barb Aug 19th, 2002 09:29 AM

I'll be glad when they start making smokers begin putting money aside (via taxation) in advance for their own health care, since they suck up such a huge chunk of the health care dollars.

Smokers suck....literally and figuratively.

David Aug 19th, 2002 09:35 AM

Faina,

How could there be any restaurants in San Francisco that allow smoking? Are you sure that this is accurate? The law in California does not allow for smoking in any restaurant, bar, or within 30 ft. of an entrance to a restaurant/bar. If there are restaurants in San Francisco that allow smoking, they are breaking the law.

Faina Aug 19th, 2002 09:46 AM

David, as a non-smoker I can't answer any of your questions. I don't have time to call each restaurant on this list to confirm smoking is allowed - I couldn't care less! I found this web trying to help Connie - the rest is up to her.

Susan Aug 19th, 2002 09:52 AM

I spent the evening at Foreign Cinema on Friday and the outdoor patio does allow smoking and serves food. There are ashtrays on each outdoor table but apparently there's a rule that if anyone sitting outside complains about the smoke, the smoker must go stand in the corner and smoke. (!) It did add to the frenchness of it all, especially with La Femme Nikita playing on the screen outside. The only caveat, it is San Francisco. If you plan to dine outside, bring a jacket.

David Aug 19th, 2002 11:22 AM

Faina,

Sorry, didn't mean to stir up the hornet's nest. I just was curious as to when this website was posted? Maybe it was created before California's smoking law went into effect.

Carolyn Aug 19th, 2002 11:35 AM

It is legal in any California establishment to smoke outdoors, with some restriction on proximity to closed areas. The actual law was written as a protection for employees to have a safe work environmment. So, if a restaurant is run and staffed by the owner(s), smoking is actually permitted. They cannot have even one employee in the facility or they are breaking the law. I frequent a bar in the SF area, where everyone who works there is a partner in the business, they allow smoking and are curiously proud of it.

Michael Aug 19th, 2002 11:53 AM

Can Caroline tell me where that bar is?!

Mark Aug 19th, 2002 05:28 PM

I'd love to know this address...or any other similar in California as we'll be visiting next month for 3 weeks up and down the state. Thanks. Mark

I Aug 19th, 2002 05:33 PM

To ALL you "smokers" out there, It aint you that smokes, the cigarette smokes, you the damn sucker!

Betty Aug 19th, 2002 10:32 PM

I too would like to know the addresses of these restaurant (owners) through out the state or is there a web site?? Betty

Connie Aug 20th, 2002 02:48 AM

Thanks for the information. I thought I had a legitimate question.
Why do some of you have to be so rude.

Thanks to the ones that helped!

I Aug 20th, 2002 03:42 AM

Oh lets see, you or someone you know smokes, cigarettes are KILLING them and you are more concerned about someone being RUDE, in all due respect lady get a grip.

michael Aug 20th, 2002 03:51 AM

How do you come to the conclusion that it's ok to be rude, as long as you are a non-smoker?

I Aug 20th, 2002 04:51 AM

No wasn't implying ok for non-smoker to be rude, its not, only that rudeness was a CONCERN of hers. Being defensive is a trait of most people who smoke Michael?

michael Aug 20th, 2002 04:59 AM

I'm still puzzled. Rudeness is not ok, whether you are a smoker or not, but CONCERN about rudeness is not ok if you are a smoker - Right?

xxx Aug 20th, 2002 05:19 AM

what a shame CA was/is so very very concerned about smoking but cared less about having an inspector check elect. company holding tanks for proper construction (i.e. liners) & doing on-going ground water testing in the water shed areas around electrical plans. Maybe a different focus would have saved thousands exposed to toxic chemicals.

Toni Aug 20th, 2002 06:04 AM

Connie,
I'm a non smoker but live outside SF. Come and have a nice vacation. Sorry for all the rude remarks! There are plenty of smokers who live in California, and there are outdoor restaurants who have the patios where you can smoke. Don't let any of the pompous remarks make you think this is how most Californians are. We do welcome you. Toni

J Correa Aug 20th, 2002 07:55 AM

I agree with Toni - come to SF, enjoy your vacation, and ignore the rude remarks. Plenty of people in CA smoke, they just don't do it at the tables inside restaurants.

As a smoker, you will actually meet plenty of people while you're here. The smokers tend to congregate outside building entrances or on patios, so you will have the opportunity to talk to lots of people while you are out for your smoke.

I Aug 20th, 2002 08:03 AM

Don't be confused Michael, from a medical standpoint and as a general rule smokers minds can be in a "fog" so to speak. You are a smoker I would gather.

esg Aug 20th, 2002 09:33 AM

maybe they should outlaw driving in california as well; people who drive are for more likely to kill or injure a person in an accident then a smoker is with their second hand smoke. you should probably ban hamburgers, french fries and cheese too as heart disease is a far bigger danger than cancer

Steve Martin Aug 20th, 2002 09:42 AM

Hey esg, would you mind if I walk over to your table at a restaurant and fart in your face?

esg Aug 20th, 2002 09:50 AM

not if i was sitting in the gas passing
section!!! to each his own, live and let live

Jason Aug 20th, 2002 10:00 AM

smokers should congregate outside of the bars and restaurants in large groups so that it pisses off the owners and they'd have no choice but to let you smoke inside. That's what's going to happen in NYC.

esg Aug 20th, 2002 10:41 AM

maam, might you have anything else opening up shortly, or could you recommend any nearby restaurants.
Bob Aug 20th, 2002 10:42 AM

There are restaurants that have outdoor patios that permit smoking...and outdoor cafes allow it as well.

esg Aug 20th, 2002 10:54 AM

i hope nobody has gotten the wrong idea from my posts.
smoking is bad!!! however, i do believe
the government should stay out of the debate. If restaurant owners want to ban smoking in their establishment good for them. If they don't then people who don't smoke can make up their own minds about going or not. I just believe you can not legislate the peoples health, if you ban smoking in restaurants cause its bad for the health, what's to stop them from banning cheescake. And if its about other patrons safety when will they ban alcohol, because anywhere alcohol is served violence is 50 times more likely to erupt than someplace that is dry.

John Aug 20th, 2002 03:13 PM

I'm sorry, but the stupidity of some people is unbelievable. Esg, come on, get real. Ban Hamburgers??? Pleezzzz, your killin me.
First off, I have nothing against smoking, in fact, I make a very good living selling them.
But I have to ask those who argue against the ban on smoking in public... where have you been the last few years??? Given what we know now, how many of you smokers with children still smoke in your own home??? Not to many of you right?? And why is that??hmmmmmm
I wonder why... yet those same people feel they have the god given right to endanger those around them in a bar or other public place...oh, and sure,,you say..." but you have the "choice" to be there..thats true I guess for me, but what about the person waiting on you?? Do they??? Its a simple pubic health issue, nothing more, nothing less,,,
smoke if you want, just don't take me with you...

Lance Aug 20th, 2002 10:27 PM

These topics sure get everyone polarized. I think it's pretty sad! Some people even seem to choose their friends only if they're none smokers. This is sad! In someways, things were better in the 60's I guess when non-smokers weren't so much on their high horses. I'm probably more tolerant of smoking because my Mom has smoked for as long as I can remember. My Dad, my sister and myself have never smoked. By the way, my parents have been married for 50 years in December. Smokers and Non-Smokers CAN live in harmony!! I think more of a live and let live attitude as in Europe would be beneficial to all of us. Lance

michael Aug 21st, 2002 12:51 AM

Can people not accept that this thread is not about the rights and wrongs of smoking - it is simply asking IF smoking is allowed in restaurants in San Francisco.

connie Aug 22nd, 2002 01:14 AM

Thank you for your comments.
A special thanks goes to Toni for a very
thoughtful reply.

California Here I COME!!!!
