Ski Areas Closing

The world is ending. With record snow the Colorado ski areas under Vail Company control will close on Monday. That is most of Summitt Cty. That will be an economic blow of the first order.

BetsyG Mar 14th, 2020 03:51 PM

Alterra Company announced suspending operations tomorrow morning. This includes Winter Park & Steamboat. Big blow to Colorado’s economy.

kureiff Mar 14th, 2020 03:58 PM

So far everything is open in Montana. My brother works at a ski area and is hoping they stay open, otherwise no paycheck.

Barbara Mar 14th, 2020 04:37 PM

Alterra Mountain is the company that now owns Mammoth Mountain. Yes, it's closed too.

Big Bear too. Just when they would be getting a lot of snow.

crefloors Mar 14th, 2020 06:39 PM

Just saw Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows, and Mammoth Mountain are closing. Not sure if others will follow.

Dayle Mar 14th, 2020 09:28 PM

All the Utah resorts too. Tomorrow.

Vttraveler Mar 15th, 2020 04:23 AM

Many of the resorts in VT are closing, too.

StCirq Mar 15th, 2020 04:27 AM

We are in lockdown now here in France. The ski resorts are the least of it. No more cafés or restaurants. Of course the fresh markets and supermarkets are open. We have to eat, you know - it's France. Priorities...

hetismij2 Mar 15th, 2020 05:55 AM

Are the markets still open St. Cirq? I read that they were closed as well.
This virus is going to cause a lot of financial hardship for most sectors of society, Bezos excluded.
Things are still open here, but I expect restaurants and bars will be closed later today. Belgium has closed theirs so the Belgians are just crossing the border to go to Dutch ones. Not very helpful.

StCirq Mar 15th, 2020 06:24 AM

Yes, heti, all the markets are still open. My husband went to the one in St-Cyprien this morning and reported that there was quite a crowd. The supermarkets are also still open, though they are closed this afternoon because it's Sunday. I can't see the fresh markets ever closing - our nearest town just celebrated 700 years of its Tuesday market without ever missing a week!

tomfuller Mar 15th, 2020 06:26 AM

As of this morning Mt. Bachelor (west of Bend OR) is closed for the next week. We'll see if they reopen next Sunday or Monday. So far, St. Charles Medical Center has one confirmed case but more are expected soon.

crefloors Mar 15th, 2020 06:33 AM

Heavenly Valley at South Shore Lake Tahoe is closed as well at Boreal Ridge and Soda Springs, smaller resorts at the summit of HW 80 between Sacramento and Reno.

Son and family will be disappointed, yes, outdoor skiing is healthy, but then there's the lodge issues. He wonders what to do with teens and 10-yr-old son home for few weeks! But in SoCal, there's always the beach.......

colorado ski areas close

Just heard from our family in Colorado. More bummers

Jean Mar 15th, 2020 09:08 AM

Not just Colorado... All resorts owned by Vail and Alterra are closed. Something like 50 nation-wide.

jamie99 Mar 15th, 2020 12:11 PM

Mammoth Mountain in California is closed, saw it on the noon news.

Fodorite018 Mar 15th, 2020 12:54 PM

The biggest 3 resorts here in WA have closed too.

Two similar threads have been merged.

I think all of the major Oregon ski areas are closing. Mt. Hood has three that are closing until March 23 with review at that time.
