Ski Areas Closing

The world is ending. With record snow the Colorado ski areas under Vail Company control will close on Monday. That is most of Summitt Cty. That will be an economic blow of the first order.

BetsyG Mar 14th, 2020 03:51 PM

Alterra Company announced suspending operations tomorrow morning. This includes Winter Park & Steamboat. Big blow to Colorado’s economy.

kureiff Mar 14th, 2020 03:58 PM

So far everything is open in Montana. My brother works at a ski area and is hoping they stay open, otherwise no paycheck.

Barbara Mar 14th, 2020 04:37 PM

Alterra Mountain is the company that now owns Mammoth Mountain. Yes, it's closed too.

Big Bear too. Just when they would be getting a lot of snow.

crefloors Mar 14th, 2020 06:39 PM

Just saw Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows, and Mammoth Mountain are closing. Not sure if others will follow.

Dayle Mar 14th, 2020 09:28 PM

All the Utah resorts too. Tomorrow.

Vttraveler Mar 15th, 2020 04:23 AM

Many of the resorts in VT are closing, too.

StCirq Mar 15th, 2020 04:27 AM

We are in lockdown now here in France. The ski resorts are the least of it. No more cafés or restaurants. Of course the fresh markets and supermarkets are open. We have to eat, you know - it's France. Priorities...

hetismij2 Mar 15th, 2020 05:55 AM

Are the markets still open St. Cirq? I read that they were closed as well.
This virus is going to cause a lot of financial hardship for most sectors of society, Bezos excluded.
Things are still open here, but I expect restaurants and bars will be closed later today. Belgium has closed theirs so the Belgians are just crossing the border to go to Dutch ones. Not very helpful.

StCirq Mar 15th, 2020 06:24 AM

Yes, heti, all the markets are still open. My husband went to the one in St-Cyprien this morning and reported that there was quite a crowd. The supermarkets are also still open, though they are closed this afternoon because it's Sunday. I can't see the fresh markets ever closing - our nearest town just celebrated 700 years of its Tuesday market without ever missing a week!

tomfuller Mar 15th, 2020 06:26 AM

As of this morning Mt. Bachelor (west of Bend OR) is closed for the next week. We'll see if they reopen next Sunday or Monday. So far, St. Charles Medical Center has one confirmed case but more are expected soon.

crefloors Mar 15th, 2020 06:33 AM

Heavenly Valley at South Shore Lake Tahoe is closed as well at Boreal Ridge and Soda Springs, smaller resorts at the summit of HW 80 between Sacramento and Reno.

cdnyul Mar 15th, 2020 06:57 AM

Every place Alterra Mountain Co. owns.

Son and family will be disappointed, yes, outdoor skiing is healthy, but then there's the lodge issues. He wonders what to do with teens and 10-yr-old son home for few weeks! But in SoCal, there's always the beach.......

Gretchen Mar 15th, 2020 08:02 AM

colorado ski areas close

Just heard from our family in Colorado. More bummers

Jean Mar 15th, 2020 09:08 AM

Not just Colorado... All resorts owned by Vail and Alterra are closed. Something like 50 nation-wide.

jamie99 Mar 15th, 2020 12:11 PM

Mammoth Mountain in California is closed, saw it on the noon news.

Fodorite018 Mar 15th, 2020 12:54 PM

The biggest 3 resorts here in WA have closed too.

I think all of the major Oregon ski areas are closing. Mt. Hood has three that are closing until March 23 with review at that time.

HooDoo (Santiam Pass) is the only ski area in Oregon open today. Willammette Pass (Rt. 58) is normally closed on Mondays but should open later this week..

Macross Mar 16th, 2020 06:34 AM

NY ski resorts closed yesterday. So much wealth and poverty living there side by side. The service industry workers are screwed.

HooDoo announced this morning that they are closed for the season even though they have plenty of snow. Word from any of the rest whether or when they will reopen.

Ski in France closed weeks ago. My Swiss mate can see snow on his lodge in France ( sounds grander than it is) but can't cross the border. Tough eh?

Jean Mar 19th, 2020 05:07 PM

Mammoth Mtn. in the California Sierra has 7+ feet of snow at the summit with 2 feet of new snow in the last 3 days. Not tough... torture!

Fodorite018 Mar 20th, 2020 05:39 AM

Jean--Our son and his gf do a lot of touring. Is that something you can take up? I am not that good so stick to regular skiing, with lifts:) They love doing all the backcountry stuff though so have still been out even with the resorts closed.

Jean Mar 20th, 2020 07:55 AM

mms, I suppose that's an option if you already have the equipment. (Rental centers are closed.) Cross-country skiing isn't my "thing," but hiking/snowshoeing is right up my alley.

Fodorite018 Mar 20th, 2020 11:31 AM

Jean—by touring I meant put skins on skis and climb up and then ski down. I do cross country ski, but like you much prefer to hike or snowshoe.

Jean Mar 20th, 2020 12:17 PM

AFAIK, the resorts here are closed to that activity within their boundaries, and I personally wouldn't venture into an area that was unpatrolled. Hiking and snowshoeing in wilderness areas are not without risk, but downhill skiing away from services and help is a different level of danger. Even the most expert of skiers can get into trouble. Even locals can misread weather signs.

Fodorite018 Mar 20th, 2020 01:36 PM

Jean—our son and gf are as cautious as you can be, but yes it can be a dangerous sport. They keep avalanche packs on etc. they are also mountain climbers and our son leads many of those climbs. I am not comfortable doing the technical climbs, but they (and my husband) have had formal training so I feel better about that.

So in today's Times there is an article about a backcountry boarder who triggered an avalanche. He was rescued by 30 emergency types and is in an ICU bed for a prolonged period. So what's wrong with this picture. He has caused these emergency workers to have to work in close proximity AND he is taking an ICU bed that may be needed in the future for a coronavirus patient--in an area that probably has a very limited number of that type of bed. Selfixh. Just do what the rest of us are doing. Stay home and help us get back to the new normal we will have.

Fodorite018 Mar 30th, 2020 05:50 AM

Gretchen--If it makes you feel better, my son and his gf are not out there doing that now even though they have extensive avalanche training. They realized what could happen and have stayed home, even during the times that this was allowed. You could make the asme argument for driving a car. You could be in a car accident and need medical care, etc. We just have to take things day by day and be as cautious as we can, in every respect. But I certainly trust them in the backcountry way more than I trust most drivers, FWIW.

Gretchen Mar 30th, 2020 06:48 AM

I don't doubt that your kids are responsible. And as you say, accidents happen--that'w what they are--comething we con't expect to happen. the unintended consequences of what we do in this particular time are different and there is a need to look out for others--like staying away from our grandkids, kids, other residents of our retirement community.. Yes, I could have an accident but it would be on the way to an allowed appointment or need.

Social distancing is a bit like vaccinations--if you do it you protect even more people than just yourself.
