Well I hesitated to post on this thread because I didn't want to rain on anyone's parade of enjoyment. But since it now includes discussion of the show's ability to be successful...
My mom and I saw it at the Kennedy Center back in June. I didn't know anything about it but asked a friend who reviews in NYC and he thought I would like it. I knew it was about conjoined twins. We both hated it. We wished we had left at intermission. I love a lot of musical theater, as does she. What was unappealing? I generally don't enjoy shows that are entirely sung with no dialogue (e.g. I like Les Mis but Phantom doesn't do it for me). Absolutely zero upbeat or memorable numbers. And while "sad" does work for some shows, this one was overwhelmingly depressing--there never seemed to be any moment where they triumphed over adversity. It was painful. |
I think you all (and my critic friend) are looking at it with an eye towards to production and performances. I agree, both were stellar. But I don't think those are sufficiently redeeming for the average audience member to overlook a story that doesn't appeal to them.

Hey, you're entitled to your opinion. It doesn't make you a bad person any more than I'm a bad person for not liking Wicked!
However, I am puzzled by the fact that you express such distain for the show but at the same time call the production and performances "setllar." |
The production and performances were high quality and, within the context of the show, outstanding. I can acknowledge talent when I see it but it doesn't make a show for me. I didn't like the fundamental story or songs.
And I only think "Wicked" is "ok" so maybe we can still be friends ;) |
Maybe it's all semantics or whatever, but I think if I had a similar reaction to a show, I would have said something like, "I only wish I had liked the show more because I thought the production and performances were stellar." I didn't see the slightest bit of "positiveness" in your comments.
PS: Hey, I certainly wouldn't make any enemy of someone just because we disagree on a show. (Hell, it's happened with my wife and me more than once!) |
