Side Show is a must-see show on Broadway
 

I don't how many of you theatergers saw my weekend posting about Side Show, so I'm repeating my comments, as it should be on your must-see list. Her'e's what I wrote:

"We saw Side Show today and loved it. The performances of the entire cast, especially the two leads, were outstanding, as was the music, the sets and everything else. The concept really works. Four of us went and all four of us thought it was outstanding.

"The rest of the audience obviously enjoyed the show as much as we did. I've never seen such a spontaneous and thorough standing ovation as the one that greeted the two stars during the curtain calls."

Have my ticket for Dec. 3 and can't wait. I've always loved this show -- or at least the album -- but never saw the original.

Patrick, you are in for a real treat! And, yes, the music is wonderful.

The only negative about the experience were the seats in the mezzanine, the least amount of room of any Broadway theater I've experienced. It makes the Vivian Beaumont look like a paradise by comparison!

I'm looking forward to seeing Sideshow in December. And I just got an offer for the Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime for January, so I'm going to jump on that as well.

Has anyone seen On the Town yet? I'm seeing a suspicious number of offers for it since it's such a big show and getting so much publicity.

Doug, we saw that production of On the Town last year in the Berkshires. We thought it was entertaining. Nothing great, but enjoyable. It seemed a little dated...sort of like watching an old favorite movie! Still, as I said, it was entertaining, just don't expect the world.

Yes, I got the same offer for Curious Incident.... and plan to take advantage of the iy. Our daughter saw it and raved about it. Another incentive was Theater Talk's program about the show last Friday.

Seeing On TheTown this Saturday. Got great reviews, but no "name" stars. It's in the largest theatre on Broadway and not filling. Hopefully it will pick up with word of mouth. The last couple weeks were a couple of the slowest for Broadway. But I'm hearing nothing but raves for On the Town.

Run, don't walk to see Curious Incident. Mezzanine seats are wonderful for experiencing the set including the "light up" floor.

Oh, and Howard, those I've heard from who saw the Berkshire production say this is much improved. Yes the show is "dated" just like other old fashioned shows like South Pacific and Anything Goe, for example. It's also long and filled with major dance numbers ala "ballet". And it has the biggest full orchestra on Broadway for that great Bernstein music.

HowardR - have you seen Cabaret? If you had to choose between that and Side Show, which one would you suggest?

I'll be there in a few weeks with my two BFF's. One really wants to see Cabaret, but the other saw it recently in Niagara on the Lake. She says she doesn't care if she sees it again, and the one who wants to see Cabaret said she'd see Side Show. I would see either one, but they are leaving the decision up to me!

I haven't seen the latest production of Cabaret, but did see the previous one with Alsn Cumming and it was quite good. And, since this production is a recreation of the previous one, it's obviously worth seeing.

Have said that, I really could pick one over the other. You're in a win/win situation, and I don't which one to recommend over the other one!

Forgive my typo in my previous post. Obviously, the second paragraph should say , "Havinng said that I really COULDN'T pick one over the other.

Regarding Cabaret -- Emma Stone has taken over as Sally Bowles and the scuttlebutt seems to be that she is wonderful, not a fantastic singer ( as Sally Bowles certainly would not be either). But an electric performance. I too saw this revival a few years ago with Alan Cumming and wasn't planning on seeing it again, but suddenly I'm itching to.

I'm happy to report that Charles Isherwood of the Times loved Side Show, using adjectives like "thrilling," "wonderful" and "engrossing," and calling it "the essential ticket of the fall season.:

Emma Stone was the original choice to play Sally this time, and Michelle Williams did it instead. I liked Williams a lot more than some critics, and I've seen this production, but I might actually see it again myself.

I'm not seeing Sideshow for about 3 weeks, so I can't comment on it, but I'm definitely looking forward to it.

I saw the last version of Cabaret and was very disappointed that Alan Cumming had just left and was REALLY disappointed that Doogie Howser took his place. Needless to say, Neil Patrick Harris blew me away. I would LOVE to see Emma Stone in this production. Can't speak to Sideshow but would really enjoy seeing Cabaret again.

Cabaret it is! I got the tix through BroadwayBox for $99 each. It sounds like we won't be disappointed.
