Where are your favorite places to get shave ice on Maui & Kauai?

On Maui we loved the shaved ice at Ashley's Yogurt at Kahana Gateway. It was awesome. Other people in our party tried a place in Lahaina and it wasn't good. We went to Ashley's almost every day. <BR>

Jo Joe's in Waimea and the blue trailer in Hanalei (Kauai). Found out about both of them in the Ultimate guide so I suspect that Mauai revealed will tell you the best bets there also

What is shave ice?

like a snow cone only the ice is shaved so it is not in chips the way a snow cone is.<BR><BR>In Hawaii they serve them in about 30 different flavors some times with ice cream, coconut, azuki bean (you will have to try the bean on your own).<BR><BR>All I can say is YUM YUM and YUM.<BR><BR>

A more solid consistancy than a slurpy but not as solid as a snow cone and you usually blend different flavors to make your customized dessert.

Another vote for Jo Jo's in Waimea. Try the shave ice over a scoop of macadamia nut ice cream....great stuff.

They have coconut dream or something of that name that is over Mac ice cream coconut milk? then coconut flakes VERY VERY GOOD!

I plan on tasting the "guri guri," at the Tasaka family stand in Kahului, Maui when I get there. I just saw a TV report about it on the web www.khnl.com, it's apparently the top spot for locals.

Our favorite is in Hanalei in front of the old school house.<BR><BR>their shave ice is fabulous....especially if you get it with ice cream.<BR><BR>A scoop of ice cream on the bottom.....then the shaved ice..then they syrup....mmmmmmm

Another vote for JoJo's in Waimea on Kauai. It's so small and dumpy-looking you could drive right by, except for the line waiting to get in.<BR>Two days later, we tried the shaved ice at Beezer's in Kaapa, but it wasn't as good. However, the ice cream concoctions at Beezer's looked good. <BR><BR>

Mark head for the blue trailer in Hanalei next time. I did like Jo Jo's the best but most in my group liked the trailer
