“Menu special: chicken feet brased in illegitimate leftovers.”
Faina: are illegitimate chicken feet from a bastardo chicken? Will need a lot of raki sauce…. |
When I was homeless I lived mostly on duck's feet, pig's knuckles, shark's fin, and swallow's nest soup. Great stuff…
I don’t know if I can handle cow's tongue, something out of an animal’s mouth gets me mooing. Just give me a hard boiled egg any day… |
valeriesgallery & Shanghainese:
It just took forever to type up that menu! :-(( [NOT!] Actually, it probably took no more than 20-30 minutes. The double numbering really threw me for a loop! Then there were the strange ones, like "bean curd leaf" where I had to stop and make sure my eyes weren't deceiving me, then look at the Chinese, which usually is so flowery it doesn't give any better clue, then look at the English again - LOL! Shanghainese: see what I mean! BOTH the pre order carp dishes are number #57! :B I typed the menu in-between doing other things and the menu typing was just a "break". There's only so much information this little mind can absorb from the internet! bear900: :) Nice link, altho that goose looks a bit wet to me! As soon as Faina returns from peeking over the dizzying edge of Copper Canyon, I'm certain she will answer any and all chicken feet ~:> bear claws :(|) cat's whiskers ((@)) questions you may have. |
Copper Canyon? Isn’t that in Chihuahua? ((&))
Have her bring me home a braised rat from Taco Smell! Bad…bad… Rapping my carp knuckles… :(|) |
E.T.: When I read the chinese I can figure out what bean curd leaf is, suspect it is the dry soya milk skins that look like yellow iris leaves you see in chinese markets.
bear900: Are you coming? |
Shanghainese: typing in Chinese is WAY past my computer skills, so I'm afraid we'll have to wait until May 23rd to get a true reading from you. Thanks for the offer to clear up the mystery! :)
The dish has six Chinese characters. The first two is "snowy vegetable" which is obviously the "pickled vegetable" The last two is "furry bean" which is obviously "soy bean" The third character is "bai" = "hundred" The fourth character has the "mouth" radical with a number "ten" on the right ("harmonious?"). "A hundred harmonies"? Is this the name of some vegetable? "bean curd leaf" causes visions of little wing-like leaves sprouting from the bean curd. Fly away, little bean curd, fly away! >:D< bear900: you sound like you have the right kind of wacko humor to be joining us! No insult meant! :) |
That's it, mystery solved! bai (3rd tone) ye (4th tone) = 100 leaves, it is a soya product made of thin sheets of tofu with the liquid pressed out. In #36 it is probably sliced into threads, it is also tied into little bows and braised with pork. The yellow iris leaves-like product is pronounced fu (2nd tone) zhu (4th tone) = soy bamboo, with the look of large bamboo leaves.
Soy bean is wonderful, it can be made into so many products, just like milk-cream-yogurt-butter-cheese ... |
I don’t know Shanghai and ET. Don’t know that I can keep up with you guys. :)
Something about “furry bean” makes me itch. b( Shanghai, after reading your menu I broke out my Qigong exercise mat and started humming… >:D< |
Okay, I’m practicing my Chinese. Will this help me qualify? :-D
¥Ò: §Ú¾j¤F. ¤A: §Ú¤]O, §ÚÌ¥ý¦YÂI¨àª F¦è§a. ¥Ò: ¦n°Ú, ¥h³Á•í³Ò§a. ¤A: ¦n, ¨«§a. A: I am hungry. B: Me too. Let's go and eat something. A: Okay. Let's go to a McDonald's. B: Okay, let's go. =D> |
bear900: Your written chinese looks prehistoric, way before McDonald existed.
The furry bean refers to the soy bean's pod when it gets mature on the stalk. The tender green beans are used for cooking and the mature yellow ones are made into tofu. ET: Snowy veg is salted greens (xien tsai)like the ones is our stir fried rice cake. The pickled veg is a salty/spicey root veg (tza tsai). |
Shanghai: I guess I’m prehistoric and way before McDonald’s existed. That or I need to find a newer Chinese/English dictionary. :(|)
I’m kidding about he furry beans. I like fur. :"> |
Shang and ET, you girls are hilarious! This is one time I must say I am happy to be eating fried chicken and collard greens instead of being excited about getting together with you all!!!!!:-D.
There is no telling what you all will have for dinner by the time all is over! |
Shanghainese: Brava! Good job! Sherlock Shanghainese! or is it Shanghainese Holmes?!
That fourth character really threw me. Is it an abbreviation? Such a difficulty, translating these dishes. I thought it meant "Snowy vegetables bathed in a hundred flavors of furry beans". Were we even considering ordering this dish for Faina? Iseeyoutoo: Well, we will be having pigs knuckles, furry beans sans fur, and a goose that is not a goose at all at all! The rest of the menu is being developed. =D> You're sure we can't interest you? Bears900: Holy Furry Beans! That looks like one of those dead Central Asian languages! VERY impressive! :) ["furry beans" aka "fuzzy beans" gets their name because they don't shave - oh, sorry, wrong beans. These get their name because the shells have a soft fuzz. Westerners don't know about the fuzz because all they see are the naked beans.] Back to work. Less silliness. :) |
Westerners only see their Asian beans naked? Is this like the Westerner's impression of Asian Massage always having a "happy ending?"
;) |
Yep, that leaf character is simplified writing, eat 10 = leaf, don't ask me why! The orginal character has grass on top, world in the middle and wood on the bottom, I'm not going further!
|
Mels' naked Asian beans would be enough for me to have a happt ending. :-"
|
Mels' naked Asian beans would be enough for me to have a happy ending. :-"
|
Where's editor Faina2?
|
I'm trying to remember why I can't go to this gtg. The reason seems so wrong right now!!!
Has the gtg already started? Aloha! |
How about naked Asian beans and frank?
Reminds me of a real old joke that starts by asking if you like Chinese food.. another happy ending. |
Welcome back hawaiiantraveler!! Hope you had a fun GTG with kuranosuke in Tokyo!
|
Mahalo Melissa, we had a blast with kuranosuke in Tokyo.....read our trip report on the Asia board when you have some time.
Wish we could join you all.....maybe next time! Aloha! |
Kal: You have to keep track of your buddy, she's in Copper Canyon and didn't bring a laptop like HT.
HT: Any time, just let us know. |
I'm still getting over eating veal trotters, veal instestines, lamb heart and ox-tail in Roma. Can I just have broccoli/beef? :-d
bill |
Welcome back, Bill!!!!! Did you really eat all that? A man after my (lamb's) heart! Is a trip report coming soon?
And to answer your question....NO. haha |
bill: Can't wait to see you, all stuffed with italian goodies. Sorry that authentic shanghainese cuisine doesn't include broc beef.
|
Bill, sounds like you left out the mountain oysters.
|
bear900: Are U coming?!
|
ha-ha-ha....
|
Yes Mels, we ate all that and more! And because we walked friggin 20 miles a day I actually lost a pound! Now that's a diet plan I could get used to! :-d
Watch for my trip report on the Europe board. Shang, save some shredded jellyfish for me! :& Bill |
>:D< BILLLAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!!
Casa benvenuti, mi paisano!!! Dove le fotos? ((P)) |
Kiao Kalini!
Photos? Don't hold your breath palini. I have over 600 to sift through! =-O Bill |
Bill: You'll have to fight Mels for that because I'm ordering a 2nd plate of jellyfish just for ET and me!
|
We're trying to rearrange our schedule so we can attend. Are kids invited to this shindig or is it an adult only event?
By the way, we actually live in San Francisco so let us know if there's anything you would like us to do, even if we can't attend the entire event! |
withkids: No rules, it's up to you about bringing kids if you don't mind some Fodorites bringing wine, and the place is not fancy, hole in the wall. IF I'm not mistaken, I remember you from the Asian Board. have 2 boys both over 10-years-old?
|
Shanghainese, right you are! What an excellent memory! We are heading out to China and Japan and would love to attend.
I spend so much time on these forums that I thought it would be nice for the kids to meet some Fodorites! Just trying to see if we can rearrange a few things.... |
Shang and ET, please don't make withkids kids eat those feet that Melissa and you all are ordering!!!
|
iamq: dorso bienvenuto! So, besides the food, did you get to see any scenery? Where in Italy? In Rome: good time- before Easter; bad time-during and after Easter.
WITHKIDS: Welcome! If you don't mind seeing your kids with a bunch of rowdy (but harmless) adults with possibly adult jokes (remember we are drinking "bastardo" wine!), then please come! The more the merrier! ISeeYouTOO: we have a great menu! Knuckles, jellyfish, furry beans, and gooseless goose. All to be washed down with bastardo and champagne. Lucky us, we're not having "bamboo shooting duck"! :) (Now I have to give up this hotel computer- won't wait again for another turn. See you all next week sometime!) |
