Sazerac

How does one pronounce this? And what is in it?

I think it's sazz-er-ack. I can't remember what's in it, but as I recall, it tasted bitter and nasty the one time I tried it (at the hotel where it was invented).

It is also the name of the restaurant associated with the Hotel Monaco in Seattle. The chef (think his name is Jason) does great things at moderate prices.

my funniest association with sazerac (?) is in the 1948 Tracey/Hepburn film, State of the Union. a wonderful scene showing a crooked politician who wants to get tracey elected so he can cash in and all his wife does is shriek with laughter and yell "honey, make me another sazarac!" hepburn, tracey's wife who doesn't want her husband to run, finally in desperation downs two sazaracs and promptly passes out.

a wonderful movie and worth seeing in an election year.

i always wondered if there was a real sazarac!
