savannah restaurants
We'll be in Savannah next week for our anniversary, and I've only made one reservation so far -- Elizabeth's on 37th. Will my husband have to bring a suit along? Thanks!
Do not know when you mean exactly by next week, but a word of warning - 6000 Savannah College of Art and Design students arrive starting on 9/10 - so places may be a bit more crowded with parents dropping off kids.
A wonderful new restaurant is Gottliebs--only open about six months. No coat and tie needed.
I just wore a nice shirt to Elizabeth's on 37, and I don't recall seeing any men in coat and tie. It isn't necessary.
Sorry, just read my post. If anyone was worrying, yes, I wore pants too!!
You have to stop at "The Lady & Sons" restraunt. It is owned by Paula Deen the cook on Food TV. Her 2 sons run the place. The food is fabulous. I love her sweet tea, hoe cakes & fried chicken. The food is kinda southern down home cookin'. We put in a reservation just to be safe b/c it can tend to be a little busy in the evenings & weekends.
blm1: Nice casual is very acceptable at Elizabeth's. Be prepared for a wonderful dinner. Try to get a table out on the sun porch. Have a great trip.
Patrick, just when I started to imagine the surprise on the maitre d's face when you arrived, in your nice shirt :D
My short list of places in Savannah that we enjoyed .. The Olde Pink House Garibaldis There are usually lines on both sides of the street for Lady & Sons so go early! Have a great time and Happy Anniversary~ |
We were headed to Lady and Sons and kind of turned off by the buffet idea at night, and also by the long lines. We went right next door (to the left facing Lady and Sons) and had a wonderful meal. We were kind of sorry we missed "the Lady", but thrilled with our dinner and service next door.
What's the deal these days with Mrs. Wilkes for lunch? |
Is there any dress code and lady and sons? we'll be coming from the airport (and likely in shorts..)
A dress code at Lady and Sons? Well, you should wear a shirt and shoes, but if you don't, I don't think anyone will notice or care. No, the place is very informal.

You will note, Patrick has <i>once again</i>, left off his pants!! |
Damn, I knew there was a chill in the air.
Thank you all so much for the advice and for the giggle! We leave Wednesday and come back Monday, and my list is growing!

We love Savannah and visit frequently. Girabaldi's is great but a little noisy since they went to the ballroom style a couple of years ago. Their speciality is the Crispy Whole Flounder that we really love. Our new favorite place is the Sapphire Grill. We had the best dinner there in a long time. The web site is http://www.sapphiregrill.com/ Their Sliced Grade ?A? Hudson Valley Foie Gras is to die for and their Crisp Mustard Seed Encrusted #1 Grade Tuna Mignon is wonderful. Have a coffee or tea at the Gryphon Tea Room 337 Bull St. SCAT runs the place and it is an old Apothecary. Nita's Place is greatfor lunch and is fameous for its southern cooking. For a quick afternoon break try the Oyster Bar River Street. They have a daily happy hour and the raw oysters along with a ice cold beer are great. Some of the other places on this post in my opinion are over rated by the tourist crowd. Savannah is our favorite city and we loved it so much we just brought a house a few miles south of there. Enjoy

Here's my two cents - we enjoyed Bistro Savannah - great food and easy on the wallet, no need for jacket and tie.
We thought the Lady and Sons was a giant rip-off. They no longer take reservations. We were there on a weekend. They open for dinner at 5 PM. We arrived at 4:45 and there was already a long line. Although we were in the first seating, it took them until 6 PM to seat us. The food was ok but nothing special, service prompt and efficient - two people can easily drop $100 with drinks and tip in this place. If I'm going to do that though, I don't expect to be kept waiting in line for an hour and a quarter in the hot sun. |
Suggest you reserve at Eliz. on 37th, probably the best restaurant in Savannah. It's located at 105 East 37th - 912-236-5547. And Bistro Savannah at 309 West Congress - 912-233-6266. Also the Sapphire Grill at 110 West Congress - 912-443-9962. Suggest asking for the first floor, in the bar area, which is actually very quiet and much cooler than the upstairs - Savannah can be a very warm and humid. Reservations are a must, unless you enjoy standing in a line with other tourists, which to me sounds like a big waste of your time when you could be seeing the historic section. By the way, if anyobe tells you to eat someplace because Clint Eastwood dined there, take a pass, lol. Enjoy Savannah, and ask about SCAD while you're there - see their work.

Patrick, when and where will you be dining out again??? ;;)
Tonight in Naples, Florida. But I already have my pants on, so fear not.
