San Francisco Restaurant Rec for a group

It's that time again - my husband has meetings every year in San Francisco and usually takes about 15-20 people to dinner one night. Couple years ago we took Stu's recommendation and went to North Beach Restaurant and ate in the Porsciutto room which worked out well (although slightly over budget in the end). They have also gone to B44, and Great Northern. Budget is around $50 per person not including drinks. They will be staying at a nice hotel not far from the south end of Market and would like to be able to walk but not necessarily. So if you all would help me again, please. Any suggestions? Thanks so much.

Well, sorry about the word mix up.

We ate at E Tutto Qua last year and was wondering how you all liked it for your GTG. I know there is a room upstairs but I didn't pay much attention to the layout when I was there.

Does it have to be a private room? We had a Xmas lunch for about 22 people at La Mar and it was fabulous. Our table was in the main room, however, it was blocked on 3 sides -- one side by the wall separating us from another room, one side by the exterior wall, and the third side by a partition. It would be walking distance from one of the end-of-Market hotels.

OOooo, that looks very interesting. Private room would be nice but not absolutely necessary. Thanks for the suggestion.

South end of market?? - that's the Castro. Is that where they're staying??

I missed that part, but I also really doubt that's what she meant!!

Ronda Jan 26th, 2010 12:46 PM

Sorry not to get back with you all as I have been a little under the weather. Stu, I was confused. I meant the north end which would be closer to the Ferry Building.

sf7307 Jan 26th, 2010 01:05 PM

And which would be very close to La Mar!

Ronda Jan 27th, 2010 01:20 PM

Checking on La Mar. They do have a table that seats 20 but don't know if it is a private room. Food looks good. Other suggestions are welcome.

<<<They do have a table that seats 20 but don't know if it is a private room. Food looks good.>>>

As I described, we did not have a private room, but our table was like a peninsula -- walls or partitions on three sides. We acted like it was a private room anyway, since even milling around, we weren't in anyone's way.

There is no private room at E Tutti Qua. It's an upstairs balcony and the noise level that rises from downstairs is great. Do not recommend that upstairs balcony.

We've just tried One Market Restaurant and it was fabulous. They do have private dining rooms but don't know how big those are. You may be able to arrange a group menu with three courses (salad, main dish, dessert) with a couple of choices for each course and specify that you want to keep it under $50/pp.

Here's their dinner menu:

If you're thinking Italian, there's a nice Italian restaurant not too far along on the Embarcadero: Il Fornaio

ET, I know you're going to think I'm picking on you, and really, I'm not....just picking on those restaurant choices :-) Obviously, restaurant preferences are very personal, but I'm not a fan of either One Market or Il Fornaio.

easytraveler Jan 28th, 2010 08:19 AM

sf7307: it's not a matter of what you or I like. It's a matter of recommending some restaurants/hotels/local attractions for the OP to choose.

You - along with a number of others- , frankly, will not allow me to make any recommendations because you think you "own" SF and only you can make recommendations.

You've made recommendations that I don't like, but I don't follow you around and constantly state that I don't like your choices or criticize your choices.

So, you don't like One Market nor Il Fornaio. Why don't you recommend more than one restaurant for the OP to choose from instead of constantly shafting others' recommendations? Otherwise, it'll look like you have personally something to gain by recommending one restaurant/hotel only.

sf7307 Jan 28th, 2010 08:23 AM

All I can say to that response is, "wow".

Ronda Jan 28th, 2010 12:54 PM

Thank you for all your recommendations. We are still searching. Tadischs is out. They recommended Alfreds. Checking also on La Mar and One Market. It's $50 per person plus drinks/wine.

Ronda Jan 28th, 2010 01:36 PM

One Market - $75 per person, 3 courses. Out.

La Mar getting back to us.

We had a really fun large group dinner at Slanted Door. The private room is enclosed by glass, so you still experience the vibrancy of the restaurant but without the extra noise. There may be flexibility in price per person, depending on what is ordered. We were served family style so had lots of tastes of a variety of dishes. Slanted Door is on the Embarcadero.

elnap29 Jan 28th, 2010 02:27 PM

Oops. Slanted Door is $63/person for dinner or $45/person for lunch in the private dining room.

Ronda Jan 28th, 2010 03:48 PM

Thanks elnap; I did check on Slanted Door and found it was too expensive. So is Epic Roast House. Checking on Lulu's as well.

Hi Ronda, I don't know if this restaurant would be of interest but John's Grill is a thought but with saying that their website indicates private parties at lunch time..so perhaps they do not offer private parties in the evening? I think their menu prices would fall within your budget. Anyway here is their website if you want to check them out. Not the most gourmet restaurant in SF but certainly an old classic SF restaurant.
