San Francisco GTG August 18, 2007

We'll have a GTG on Saturday at noon at the Pacific Catch restaurant, the info is here:

http://www.pacificcatch.com/index.html

Please say here is you're coming, or send me an e-mail [email protected]

I'll start: if I can talk my friend (a non-Fodorite) into coming, 2 people. If not, one.

kealalani Jul 23rd, 2007 11:06 AM

I'm not allowed to use particular hotmail email addresses....

Have fun!

FainaAgain Jul 23rd, 2007 11:09 AM

So am I, so what? Feeling special? Don't! ;)

welltraveledbrit Jul 23rd, 2007 11:12 AM

I'm in Rockridge and I'd love to cross the Bay Bridge to meet some of the local Fodorites but I'm afraid I'll be in Provence!
I know don't feel too sorry for me :)
Maybe next time.

kealalani Jul 23rd, 2007 11:17 AM

Certainly not the hostess with the mostess. Will turn on you like a rabid racoon......

incert fake smiley winky emoticon here.

FainaAgain Jul 23rd, 2007 11:18 AM

I am always a gracious hostess :))

Shanghainese Jul 23rd, 2007 01:24 PM

Hear, hear, Faina is the most gracious hostess in SF, I know because I am the unpaid member of the grand dame's household staff. Count me in since I'm off duty that day and allowed to party.

welltraveledbrit -- Why don't you set one up in Rockridge? I'll bring Faina after I check her social calendar!

MelissaHI Jul 23rd, 2007 03:13 PM

wish I could be there!

artlover Jul 23rd, 2007 06:37 PM

If you have another one in Nov. (between the 10th thru the 17th) I'd be there! Have fun, all.:D

paula1470 Jul 24th, 2007 08:24 AM

Unless things change, I am planning on being there.

trippinkpj Jul 24th, 2007 08:26 AM

I should be able to make it. I'll let you know if anything changes.

Shanghainese Jul 24th, 2007 09:24 AM

artlover -- Why don't you start the Nov GTG post? I'll be back from China on Nov 9 soo jetlagged, DH leaves with his friends Nov 10, someone has to watch the nest!

easytraveler Jul 24th, 2007 10:44 AM

Oh, boy! Am I achy-breaky all over. Why do people like to travel so much? (Just kidding?)

I'm in! So far... tripping and I will be coming with the champagne.

artlover: Hi! Yes, do start a thread on the exact dates when you will be here! It's too far into the future for me to plan as yet! But do hope to see you again! If not, this is a VERY FUN crowd of Fodorites!

BTW: the switch over to the Pacific Catch OK by everyone?

If not, we can go on the GREAT RESTAURANT HUNT.

FainaAgain Jul 24th, 2007 10:54 AM

So far, nobody raised any concerns regarding this restaurant neither on Fodor's nor in e-mails.

roslaire Jul 24th, 2007 09:26 PM

I am in, as long as work lets me. :)
I will be drinking cool iced water or tea. I don't need the champagne, but I will gladly toast! To us!

FainaAgain Jul 25th, 2007 07:58 AM

Roslaire, and everybody else, there will be no champagne! This place does NOT allow outside drinks. But they have a great wine list.

Please remember to bring cash to pay your share.

Now, A PROBLEM. I sent an e-mail to that place for reservation, and this is the answer:

"Our Chestnut Street location is unable to take reservations due to our small
seating capacity. I would like to suggest coming out to Corte Madera
location for the occasion. We have a large indoor dining room and also an
outdoor patio. I can take a reservation for your party at this location."

ANY SUGGESTIONS? Any suggestions other then going to the Grand Cafe? :)

Shanghainese Jul 25th, 2007 09:55 AM

I have several suggestions, need to know --
1. type of food (american, french, italian, mexican, japanese, thai, chinese etc.)
2. entree not to exceed price
3. preferred location

Short of sounding like a broken record, I repeat this GTG is "Buy Your Own Drinks", it is only fair to everyone attending.

FainaAgain Jul 25th, 2007 10:00 AM

1. any

2. any

roslaire Jul 25th, 2007 06:35 PM

Since we don't know how many of us are coming for sure. lets just all go to the pacific catch at noon, if they don't take reservations, we can wait. They will be having Hawaiian music that day. It will be nice. Let's stay there.

easytraveler Jul 25th, 2007 06:48 PM

Ditto on Faina's answers:

any

any

any

Pacific Catch is fine. Any place is fine. Although I heard that Pacific Catch was featured as an intro ad when the iphone came out and they was swamped! We should therefore plan tactics and strategy on getting all the seats that we will need.

artlover Jul 25th, 2007 08:39 PM

OK, I'll post again when the time's closer or maybe one of you will remember. Have a great GTG! (Hi, easytraveller--DH is going to lawschool at Pace in White Plains, so I'm going to NYC in Oct., but will look forward to SF in Nov.)

artlover Jul 25th, 2007 08:39 PM

sorry, I meant DD!

easytraveler Jul 25th, 2007 10:49 PM

Hi, artlover!

I know where White Plains is! One of the salesmen in a company I worked for had his home there and he invited me home to meet his family and have dinner, but other than that don't know anything about White Plains! :)

Congratulations to your DD! That's great news! ((y))

do post separately and I'll try my darndest to make your date of arrival. Looking forward to seeing you again! :)

FainaAgain Jul 26th, 2007 08:14 AM

Hmmm... can we try to wing it? Or maybe everybody reserves one table and we can move them together? :)

paula1470 Jul 26th, 2007 08:41 AM

Faina-Thanks for all your help in trying to pick a restaurant. I don't care what kind of food, the price (as long as it's reasonable). But I think we should try to go somewhere where we can make a reservation. Also if Pacific Catch is as busy as ET says, then it might be really loud and noisy. I personally would prefer someplace a little quieter so we can visit without shouting. So there's my input.

FainaAgain Jul 26th, 2007 08:48 AM

Paula, I hardly ever eat out, and the only quiet place I know was rejected (Borobudur) so... are we back to Grand Cafe? It was not noisy as I remember the last GTG there.

paula1470 Jul 26th, 2007 08:54 AM

Well it doesn't have to be perfectly quiet but it would be nice not be shouting above everyone. The Grand Cafe looked good to me but it is a little more expensive. So I guess we will keep searching. How many people are we expecting so far?

travelbug44 Jul 26th, 2007 08:57 AM

I go past Pace Law School everyday on my way to work

FainaAgain Jul 26th, 2007 09:01 AM

6 on this thread... travelbug, are you coming? 7 what about withkids? 8

In my e-mail to the Catch I asked about 6 to 10 people

Shanghainese Jul 26th, 2007 11:51 AM

It will be a looong wait at the Catch, all the elegant people in SF will get there early! We should be there when it opens, not at noon.

I'll post back Fri after I check a few places on reservation.

artlover Jul 26th, 2007 12:28 PM

travelbug, can you help us? Besides White Plains, which would be the next best airport for her to fly into?

Shanghainese Jul 27th, 2007 09:31 AM

Back to restaurants, I've been to each of the following more than 3 times in the past 12 months, and I can make the reservations. And Faina, please help with the posting of the websites --

For mouthwateri american food, Americano in the Hotel Vitali on the Embarcadero 1/2 block from the Ferry Building with bay views.

For lovely pan-asian food, E & O Trading Co. on Sutter @ Stockton by Union Square.

For delicious and inexpensive chinese food, we can go back to Shanghai House on Balboa. Tea is "mien fei" = free, and everyone bring their OWN libation!

Shanghainese Jul 27th, 2007 09:33 AM

Oops, meant "mouthwatering", typing with 9 fingers, the missing one went into a bowl of chili!

I think there is a parking garage, or even more then one in that area? Anybody knows?

FainaAgain Jul 27th, 2007 10:48 AM

Can't find Shangai House website, only reviews, this is the address:

3641 Balboa St
San Francisco, CA 94121
(415) 831-9288

cobbie Jul 27th, 2007 12:50 PM

Faina: I'd consider coming from the Sacramento area if you would go somewhere with a free parking lot & not too noisy & we could have a reservation.

Shanghainese Jul 27th, 2007 04:03 PM

Shanghai House is so small, new & crowded, they won't need a website.

E & O Trading Co. is 1/2 block from the huge Stockton/Sutter garage, not free.

Americano is 1/2 to 1.5 blocks from the Rincon Center & Howard Garages, not free. Valet parking is approx. $16/3 hours.

Shanghai House is street parking, feed the meter every hour. Free parking is many blocks away and scarce in the residential areas, which is scarcer on weekends.

cobbie -- there are no commercial free parking in SF except for very few high-end expensive restaurants. Yes, I can get reservations at all 3 of the above, need plenty advance notice for parties over 6 persons. I'm going to E & O tonight.
