San Antonio Hotel Recommendations, please
We will be in San Antonio for 5 nights at the end of May. I would like some recommendations for inexpensive places. We will need to go to Fort Sam Houston and will plan on doing touristy things, so location is somewhat flexible.
|
Can you clarify what inexpensive means to you? On Travelocity.com, at the end of May, I found the Riverwalk Vista for $136/night. For more info, check out...

I worked at Ft. Sam Houston in the early 90's and LOVED the city and the people. I understand from friends who still live in the area that the city has grown and changed significantly since then, so I'm probably not your best resource. However, any hotel on the riverwalk - while nicely situated and lovely - will be fairly expensive. (I'd still check rates for the hotels in this area, though, as it is an ideal location for you.) If memory serves me, there are a number of hotels near the airport, along the N.E. portion of I-410, which is (was!) an easy commute to Ft.Sam, the zoo, museum, downtown, etc. I believe that there are also a number of hotels slightly further west, along I-10. Good luck and enjoy your trip!

There are a number of hotels near the airport but 410 is under major construction in that area--it's a disaster that I would try to avoid.
|
Do I ever agree with what AM said about 410. Avoid anything on that, or anything where you have to use 410 to get to it. I have to pick up an FA friend from her hotel near the airport Tuesday and I'm already dreading it and trying to figure out how to get around it. Driving through those concrete barriers scares the beejeebies out of me.
Prices should be lower on the river toward the end of May--not inexpensive, but lower, and you may have some luck on Priceline. |
OO,
Depending on the time of day you have to be there it "may not" be that bad. Taking 1604 to 281 may be the way to go. I had to drop DH off yesterday around lunch time. As we sat at the red light at 410 and Airport Blvd. we just gazed around in amazement at the circus that's taking place. I wondered to myself how the restaurants, businesses in the area are holding up--can't be pretty. There are some concrete sections of highway perched high in the sky... every time I have to drive under one I wonder... |
Thanks, all! We decided on the Riverwalk Vista - the above rate wasn't there for our dates and I wouldn't call it really inexpensive but it looks like a neat place.
|
OO, AnnMarie is right on - from your part of town you will do best getting to the airport by using the 281 entrance. Depending on which hotel you need to get to for your FA friend, (north/outer edge of loop or south / inner edge - and which side of airport boulevard, best route can vary.

Hi guys, thanks. That's what I figured too...281 to 410. The section of 410 east of 281 had been OK, but we went through last weekend, fortunately with dh driving, and now that has been destroyed too--those barriers sitting right on the lane make me crazy. Picture "The Scream" sitting behind the wheel. :) They stay at the Dreary Inn, so I'll think I'll only have to do the service road from that approach.
Our car's dealership sits right under those dangling bridges at Airport Blvd AnnMarie. Now they are going to have flyovers all above and around them, yet I don't think they have any plans to move, in fact just expanded their service center. What a gawd awful location!! |
We stayed at the Hawthorn Suites Riverwalk in San Antonio for two nights last month at about $110 per night. Its not exactly centrally located, but the river taxi does pass right by about every 45 minutes.
They do charge $10.00 per night for parking, but your stay includes a hot breakfast in the morning and I think includes a cocktail hour every evening. |
try Drury Inn Riverwalk (location 005) or the brand new Drury Inn Plaza. Both are on the riverwalk, within a block of each other, have a decent hot breakfast, popcorn in the afternoon with comp drinks.

I found a good "cheap" extended stay place that my family and I will be staying in the in of July. Studio 6. A gentleman on another fourm said it was clean and that his family would be staying again in May. It does not have a pool but it's $48 a night and has a kitchen. We have 2 rooms reserved for a week at $338 per room per week. Not a bad deal.
|
Oh, I forgot. There are two Studio 6 in San Antonio. We are staying at the one close to Six Flags.
|
"I was in San Antonio when they were just finishing the river walk." Well at least you didn't say when they were just finishing the Alamo.
Gee, I'd like to get back to San Antonio one of these days. |
C'mon, Patrick - we'll arrange a GTG during your visit - right, OO?
|
I agree, Seamus...come on over Patrick. Liberty Bar...be there or be square, right AnnMarie? We've got a pretty good contingent between here and Austin just waiting for a party...pick your date. :D
|
Please come play, Neo! I promise to behave. :-D
|
Just keep her away from the matches. :D
|
:-O Hey! No spilling secrets, lol! ;-) ;-) ;-)

"Please come play, Neo! I promise to behave."
Huh? Behave? Now it sounds like you're trying to talk me out of coming there. I do think there's a Hyatt there -- with Senior discounts. . . |
