Rolling Rally in Boston Today
 

FYI - the City of Boston is celebrating the Red Sox World Series win today with a "rolling rally". The Red Sox will parade through the city on the famous duck boats. Music provided by the Drop Kick Murphies, dancing by Jonathan Papalbon. 1 million Red Sox fans are expected to line the parade route. Love that Dirty Water!!! Oh Boston you're my home!!!

It's a wild scene out there, even on Summer Street where I work. There's a steady stream of people in Sox gear walking up from South Station. It took me an extra half hour this morning to get off the MA Pike! But it's great - terrific energy in the city right now. Go Sox!!!

I am stuck out here by the airport - wish I could be going. Lets go Red Sox!

From the "Red Sox Nation, California", wish I could be there..originally from Quincy, dying a little every frustrating year of runner-up-ism..been in California since '57, but always a BoSox fan...now with two years of vindication ('04' '07) I'm happy and proud.(I saw Ted in his roiokie year, 1939!)

Stu - I'm from Quincy originally too. Great to have won the Series again in our lifetimes. The new ownership goes overboard with the marketing of the team but who can argue with them today.

Should be a fun day! I was at the "Celtic Pride" parade in '86 and had a blast. Sadly, the Celts have gone downhill since, but the Pats and the Sox are making up for it. :)

Like Tower, I'm now in the California branch of the Red Sox Nation. I kind of liked the lovable underdog image we used to have. With 2 World Series wins under our belt, I hope we don't turn into the arrogant frontrunners. You know, like a certain pin-striped team. ;)

Another update - the Drop Kick Murphies have given Papelbon a kilt with his number on it to wear during the parade.

Congrats to Red Sox Nation from your fans in Texas! We got to see the Sox play at Fenway in September, and I told my husband, I think this team is going to win the World Series. Wish we could be there to celebrate with you guys.

QHS '46...when the Sox of Pesky, Doerr, Dom DiMaggio and Ted won the pennant and played the Cards in the WS, I'm in Alabama doing infantry basic training..no TV in those days and only one radio in the day room that was off limits in the afternoons! Talk about going out of my mind.

Finally saw a paper the day the Cards won it all. Yeah, I secretly wept!

Grandparents lived on Beale near Wollaston center. Family lived in North Quincy until I was 4, then we moved a bit south. My dad was a Quincy cop for 30 years. Spent much time in Wollaston.

Sorry - meant to say that I feel your pain for not getting to hear the game back then. Johnny Pesky was in today's parade. Also not sure where Dysart St is.

I didn't know you were part of the Red Sox Nation, too. Hubby was born in Wocester, MA. Enough said!

The Denver branch of Red Sox Nation here... talk about conflict (for half a second)! My mother would have KILLED me if I thought about rooting for the Rockies! Colorful cast of characters, those Red Sox are! In 2004, I was able to fly to Boston for just 36 hours to attend the parade and the family celebration - nothing like it ever in my life! This year is sweet too. I'll be scouring boston.com later for all the parade pictures and details. As my mom asked, "how many days until Spring Training?"

Coincidence. My folks moved to Everett St. off of Beale after I moved to California. I remember the old Wollaston Theater. Only Quincy cop I knew well was Guido "Budsy" Pettinelli. Did you go to QHS?

Dysart Street is off Elm Street about two blocks south of Hancock Street, Quincy Square ("squay-ah"). Near Rizzo's bakery. Dad worked for John Hancock in Quincy. While in HS, I sold ladies shoes at Morse's in the square...35 cents an hour.

Ah, nostalgia!! It takes a big Red Sox win to get us all reminiscing!

And I currently live about 2 blocks away, near the intersection of Quincy Ave and Water St!!

Stu - Didn't stay in Quincy long enough to go to school there (though my older brother and sister went to Sacred Heart). We moved a few towns away but Quincy felt more like home. I think I remember Morse Shoes - but I definitely remember Remicks and the Capitol Supermarket, the Bargain Center and the Wollaston Theater.

Coincidence again. In my most recent historical novel, I mention Sacred Heart on Hancock Street in Chapter One, where I describe Quincy c.1904.

The venerable Thomas Crane Public Library was very helpful to me in my resarch of turn-of-the-century Quincy.

Yep, born and raised in MA. I guess your DH & I are in the South Bay chapter of the Red Sox Nation. It seems that Fat Face Fenner's in Hermosa is the meeting place for watching Sox & Pats games.

tekwriter - I had to laugh about your Mom. At one particular point in the last ALCS game, I muted the volume on the TV and said to the kids. "Hear that?". "What?", they asked. "That's your Grandmother, 3000 miles away, screaming at her TV". We called her after the game and, sure enough, she was completely hoarse. But ecstatic. :)

Oh, and in the SE part of the state, it was pronounced something like: "Wuss-tuh"

Tower: I saw Johnny Pesky AND Dom DiMaggio on one of the Duck Tour amphibious vehicles in the rolling rally parade the other day.

You might know that Pesky remains an employee of the Red Sox--he's an active scout, so active that he actually broke a bone in his leg while on duty a couple Spring Trainings ago (got hit by a foul ball right in the shin!)

Oh, you mean the Redskins should have cheated too? Well these things take more than 3 hours to plan. You know, all the hormone prescriptions, janitors stealing information from the opponents' locker room, hidden cameras and such--it all takes much more than three hours.

Calm down Ralphie - you sound so angry! Bill Belichick was totally wrong to cheat in the past. He did NOT cheat in the game against the Redskins. Face the facts, the Patriots are one of the best if not the best team in the NFL!

Belachik did not cheat. He broke a rule but every infraction does not constitute cheating. The media wants to paint the Patriots and their coach as "evil" ( see the SI.com article) but that's ridiculous and over the top. Sports writers are painting with too broad a brush.

Ralphie - not sure where you are getting your "facts" but I haven't heard any of those accusations anyway else. Don't disagree that Belachik is making a point to the rest of the league by not letting up even when there appears to have been an insurmountable lead but that's the nature of professional sports.

Maybe if the Patriots hadn't let up in the AFC playoff game last season when they went into halftime leading 21-3, they would have won the Superbowl. When is it time to stop playing hard - when you have an 18 point lead? The Colts scored 31 points in the second half of their game against the Saints but no one is accusing them of running up the score. When Philly had a 28 point lead in the 4th quarter against Detroit and went on to score another touchdown, no one accused them of running up the score.

There's a double standard developing in the media that covers football. Don't believe it all Ralphie.

A Pats' player was recently suspended for using Human Growth Hormone. It is against the rules to use HGH.

The Pats' were fined and penalized a draft pick for filming hand signals from the opponent's sideline at one particular football game. This was done by planting a cameraman amongst the press corps disguising as one of them. The cameraman was caught when he attempted to enter the Pat's locker room at halftime. The film in his confiscated camera was zoom footage of the opponent's sideline making hand signals. This was specifically prohibited in a recently-prior memo issued to all teams.

To Janiekins: they DID cheat again against the Redskins. During the football game, held at the Pat's home field in Foxboro the visiting Redskins had their wireless communications cut off during the game. This is NOT the first time this has happened to a team visiting the Pats, so it's not a coincidence.

There is even more evidence of the Pats cheating, but this post of mine has gone too long already. Those with blinders on won't believe it anyway. Don't think Bellichick has a cheater's personality? Look at the court records of his divorce proceedings... hoo-boy!

I didn't mean to steer this thread away from the Boston Red Sox victory celebration. I've rooted for the Sox since I was a child who'd never even visited Massachusetts, and I'm so happy to see a sports team that actually exhibits CLASS and SPORTSMANSHIP do so well. The Sox deserve all of their sucess and it was great to see the Rolling Rally.

Red Sox/Dodgers in 2008, anyone?

I'd LOVE to see the Sox vs. the Dodgers in the 2008 world series. Between Joe Torre being the new Dodgers' manager, and the former Sox personnel playing for the Dodgers, it'd be an excellent series! In fact I was rooting for the Dodgers to take the NL pennant this year (could anyone imagine Grady Little vs Francona in the WS??). Oh well, that's my dream anyway.

Let's re-sign Lowell, get Johann from the Twins and take the series in 2008!!!! Thank goodness spring training is only a couple months away!!

PS: My life is just fine--thanks for caring. I support sportsmanship, honesty, and character when I root for sports teams. The Red Sox are a perfect example of when this is rewarded. GO SOX

If we are going to discuss the Pats then at least get the facts straight. 1. The camera guy had the tapes confiscated in the first 8 minutes of the game, not at half time.

2. Lots of teams tape - Belachiks infraction was about were he taped from. The same taping taking place by a staff member in the stands would not have been an infraction.

3. Rodney Harrison personally violated the rules regarding performance enhancing drugs as many other players in all professional sports have, most recently Paul Byrd of the Cleveland Indians. They are cheaters, not their coaches. No one is accusing Eric Wedge of cheating despite the actions of his player, why should Belachik be accused?

4. NFL Security controls the communication systems in every stadium. The fact that the communications cut out in Gillette cannot be attributed to the Patriots. Once the communications cut out, it is the team's responsibility to notify the NFL who will then shut off the opponents communication as well.

Regardless of any of this, we are going to witness a tremendous game on Sunday evening when the two remaining undefeated teams play each other. Ralphie if it enhances your enjoyment of the game to view this as "good" v "evil", then so be it.
