Riverside Inn NYC - comments?

Has anyone heard of or stayed at Riverside Inn in the Upper West Side? Need comments! TQ.

Talulah Too Nov 21st, 2000 09:32 PM

No. But the area's ok. Hope that helps a little if you're worried about safety.

Amber Nov 24th, 2000 10:29 PM

made bookings there for december - only $469 for 7 nights! and over the new year period too! so it's cheap but no, i have not heard anything about it. so am keeping my fingers crossed. try their website at www.riverside-inn.com
From a previous post:
Author: Alex ([email protected])
Date: 11/16/2000, 10:50 pm ET

Message: DO NOT STAY THERE. I had some friends who stayed there before because it looked decent on the website; it turned out to be a disgusting dive.
There was a drunk guy who they called the doorman who was always on the step. I went to visit them and the quarters were hideous. They were so afraid of the place they left after only one night.

Be advised that if the price is too good to be true in NYC, then it is. If you are willing to pay a bit more but want to stay in the same area, there is a quality inn or something nearby on b-way and 96th street.

bonni Nov 29th, 2000 11:30 PM

what's the name of the inn?

Owen O'Neill Nov 30th, 2000 03:31 AM

I'm guessing that the previous poster simply forgot to capitalize - the name would be Quality Inn (rather than that title being a description).

amber Nov 30th, 2000 04:49 PM

oh no! is it that bad? has anyone else had a bad experience there? or is it just friends of alex?! HELP!

stuart Nov 30th, 2000 10:01 PM

it's funny that no one seems to have heard of the place. or anyone who has stayed there. well, save for one guy, anyway. well, if you ask me, go ahead and stay there - it's not like you'll be in your room all day if you're on holiday in new york. and it's not like you can find any other affordable place to stay in the city this late in the year. if it turns out bad, well, chalk it up to good experience. at least you didn't waste too much money!

cam Dec 4th, 2000 12:34 AM

hey, checked out the website. pretty weird not to have pictures of the rooms when they had a pix of the lobby. what gives?

AC Dec 4th, 2000 05:02 AM

HI:
I do not know any thing about this place but it does not look very nice to me. The website says that a suite of private rooms share a kitchen and a bathroom which leads me to believe that htis used to be an apartment house and the apartments were converted to rooms for rent. A transient hotel
The location is pretty far from everything and you will have use public transportation or cabs to find anything. Nothing is within walking distance. Good luck!

I have stayed there and never again. While it was cheap, I felt safe (bars on the window that overlooked the alley) and it was quiet, it was a bit decrepit. The tiles in the front hall were chipped and dirty, the fellow at the front desk had to deliver toilet paper to our room, and when we entered the lobby with suitcases, the guys who were hanging out looked at us like they wondered why we were there. Tiny room with nowhere to sit but the bed. My sister-in-law, a nurse who lives in the city, says it is a former AIDs hotel.

portman Dec 5th, 2000 08:36 PM

no wonder it's so cheap! good luck!

There are several hotels in Manhattan in good locations that offer roms with shared baths. Two that have been mentioned favorably in this forum on repeated occasions are Pickwick Arms and the Murray Hill Inn. It's quite conceivable that you could get a room in one of these for $80-85 per night - the extra $100 spent over a seven day period would be well worth the money. I've stayed in some real fleabags for a single night and found it bearable but multiple nights in such a dive can be depressing.

Troy Dec 7th, 2000 01:36 AM

most, if not all, affordable places are fully booked during the year end period. you'll be lucky if you find anything else. if you cannot afford anything else other than riverside inn, then live with it, dinginess and all. someone did say he felt safe. so maybe that does say something about the place after all.

wen Dec 11th, 2000 01:12 AM

when did you guys stay at riverside? was it recent? have they changed or improved any since then?
