What are your interests?

My #1 reco would be to take a 100mi bike ride around all five boroughs of the city, but I'm not sure if that matches your interests.

other people will recommend to visit various museums, or see a show, or see historical sights, or any number of things.

That is an extremely broad question as you do not state your interests.

Also, please clarify if by "New York" you mean New York City or somewhere else in New York State.

Thanks guys! I'll be in New York City yes, and I like to be active, so the bike ride looks like a good option. I'll check out the TimeOut website - great.

I'd like to try to some craft beer as well. Anyone here interested in craft beer and would recommend 1-2 bars to check out?

Craft beers are everywhere in NYC and they're all horrendous. Drink Heineken. That said, Blind Tiger Ale House is probably what you're looking for.
