Random shootings in L.A.

I heard a news clip about random shootings in Los Angeles.

Can anyone tell me more about this?

Traveling to the area in May...how worried should I be?

Wednesday Apr 27th, 2005 06:12 AM

Hi Lear22, I'm sure you will get some choice responses for this question, so get ready...I used to live in Atlanta and think of it this way...."I heard there were accidents on the highway today, should I drive to work ?"...If you worry about this stuff you will never leave the house or visit a convenience store again for fear of being shot because "sometimes it happens there"....happens everywhere all the time, you just don't hear about it all. Don't waste time being worried, have a great vacation !

Little_Man Apr 27th, 2005 07:12 AM

let's see ... millions of people live in the area, and 3 people have been shot over a period of about a month..
Don't come here!
It's too DANGEROUS!!!

placeu2 Apr 27th, 2005 07:25 AM

Yep, I would worry about that but....

You may want to lose some sleep over the potential for earthquakes, wildfire, torrential rain, mud slides, massive power outages and just plain traffic jams like no place else.

Oh and I heard that OJ and Robert Blake are having a gathering there in May. Don't hang out in any hotels that Kobe frequents and for heavens sake, stay away from Neverland!

Welcome to CA!

Of course, you may never get here, because your plane might crash on the way.

Seriously, though, I think May will be the best time since it is getting a lot of attention now (maybe because of the L.A. Mayoral election in a few weeks?). The CHP and others have heightened their freeway patrols. I drove from the L.A. Harbor area to Downtown L.A. on the 110 freeway yesterday, and saw lots of law enforcement officers (CHP, LACounty Sherriff's, LAPD) in each direction.

Maybe a good strategy would be to travel on the 405 exclusively. No shooter in his right mind would try a "drive-by" here, since the "getaway" would be virtually impossible on this traffic-clogged freeway. ;)

You shouldn't worry about shooting. It's mudslide you must be aware of. Don't stand in the path of it. And if you rent a car beware of white Broncos.

Oh, wait, that's not it! Was the last LA riot in May?

Well, add another name to the troll list.

A random act implies no pattern can be ascertained. Not sure how you can plan to avoid a random act when by definition it's you know, random.

BTW, there were about 500 murders in LA in 2004. Statistically, 25 of them were people with no criminal record killed by a complete stranger.

So, unless there is something you'd like to share about your past behavior, you have a 1 in 396,000 chance of being killed based on an LA population of about 9.9mm.

HI--I just read your original ? about going to LA in May w/two little kids for a family wedding. I know that going to an unknown big city can be unnerving but I think you are letting your fears get the better of you. I was a little worried the first time I went there b/c it seems like we, in other parts of the country, hear so much about crime there. You will be fine.

Lear22 Apr 27th, 2005 08:47 AM

Wow! Thanks for the replies.

I was looking for details on the who/where/why/when etc...

ipod_robbie Apr 27th, 2005 08:56 AM

There's a high probability of a random earthquake striking the LA basin in the next 45 days. Make sure you're prepared.

P_M Apr 27th, 2005 09:00 AM

Do you ask this question before visiting every city, or are random shootings only limited to LA?

rkkwan Apr 27th, 2005 09:20 AM

If it's random, then how would anybody know the who/when/why/how of the next shooting?

RBCal Apr 27th, 2005 09:32 AM

FYI
Shootings and road rage occur everywhere. Don't cut people off or give them the finger.

Last Monday a woman with her baby was shot during a car jacking in Houston.
Also, a police officer was shot in a freeway shooting in Houston last Friday.

A man was shot in a road rage incident on a Dallas freeway on April 7th.

There was a freeway shooting in San Francisco's East Bay (Contra Costa) in late March.

travelinwifey Apr 27th, 2005 09:47 AM

There's also been a few road rage murders in Las Vegas in the last few weeks. I keep telling my 69 year old MIL to stop flipping off people that cut her off. I am so worried it will catch up to her. Just not worth it. Teenagers here drive terribly and violently.

P_M Apr 27th, 2005 09:58 AM

We could go on all day about random acts of violence happening in the US and around the world. That's what makes this question so silly.

travelinwifey Apr 27th, 2005 10:04 AM

Indeed, and I am sure the statistics show you are probably more likely to have a fatal car accident in your own home town vs. traveling abroad.

placeu2 Apr 27th, 2005 10:21 AM

According to another post of yours Lear22...this trip is to attend your sisters wedding?

Please tell us that you are not seriously considering blowing off your sisters wedding because of some random acts?

LA people: Aren't you about due for a locust invasion? Drought perhaps?

OK...enough of that negativety..both of the LA baseball teams are in 1st place! Course the Lakers are...well..er...never mind

FainaAgain Apr 27th, 2005 10:43 AM

Maybe Lear just wants to add some excitment to the wedding? To hire some shooters. You know, like a woman jumps out of a cake - everybody knows it. Shooting would be something different.

P_M Apr 27th, 2005 11:34 AM

Or maybe this is a shotgun wedding?
