Prarie du Chien/Effigy Mounds

Any advice on the Prarie du Chien area of Wisconsin, including the Effigy Mounds in Iowa??

What in specific did you want to know? My sister lives there; I've visited many times, but have never been to the mounds. Wyalusing State Park in WI, just east of PDC, is a nice place to hike. It overlooks the Mississippi river and is very scenic.

As for the town of PDC, I can't say much in its favor, especially since I'm kind of anti-small town (I live in Chicago).

If you have any specific questions I can call my sister and see if she has any recommendations.

I agree with the recommendation of Wyalusing State Park.

Villa Louis state historic site is also worth a visit.

Fort Crawford Museum is about local history.

Thanks, SusanM and abram. Will be in the area around the second week of October and looking for things to do and see. The hike sounds fun. Any recommendations for a lunch spot?

Nelle,

If you go to the park, I would recommend packing a picnic lunch. Sit and enjoy the view -- the trees should look good in October!

If you prefer to eat out, the only place near the park is a tavern right outside the entrance. You can't miss it; it's called Come Back Inn or something like that, but really it's the only thing in the area.

In PDC itself there's the standard fare; Culvers, Pizza Hut, McD, and a variety of local diners.

Enjoy!
