Posting Problems

Anyone else having trouble getting replies to "take"? It seems that the reply box comes up with a different appearance, then it takes many tries copying and pasting each time to eventually get it to actually post.

And while we are at it, isn't there SOME way to prevent threads being titled using backslashes such as Atlanta/Savannah/Charleston, which results in the left hand column being skewed????

travel_addict Jun 21st, 2006 06:48 AM

The editors have been notified of the issue - a few of us e-mailed them yesterday. It's not doing it anymore on my computer. Strange.

And in answer to your other question:

It would seem like the Fodors programmers could put a limit on the width of the postings so they would automatically return. I do this with my web site so I'm thinking it wouldn't be a problem. (??)

travel_addict Jun 21st, 2006 08:22 AM

dang-nabbit! I spoke too soon. The posting gremlins are baaaack! =:)

Malesherbes Jun 21st, 2006 08:28 AM

Oops...I see now there's already been a thread on this.

Dang-nabbit...(my husband is the only person I know who uses that term!) :)

iceeu2 Jun 21st, 2006 08:35 AM

I can't post on the Yankee/Rebel thread.

btw, I'm 100% Dixie...was General Lee your grandfather?

kswl Jun 21st, 2006 08:36 AM

It started on my computer with the Luxury Vacations advertisement for travel auctions . . . just when I thought we'd gotten rid of Goofy, Dumbo, et.al, we get something worse.

iceeu2 Jun 21st, 2006 08:40 AM

Now, I can't post on the Fodor's Convention thread....but, if I could, I would tell kswl to leave her mock apple pie made with ritz crackers and her some kind of impossible pie made with bisquick at home!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

FainaAgain Jun 21st, 2006 08:49 AM

This is my first attempt today, let's see if posted. Had problems reading posts yesterday.

rkkwan Jun 21st, 2006 08:52 AM

1. Hit Back Button.

2. Click "Reply".

3. If normal screen comes up, proceed; if weird screen comes up, goto 1.

Lots of replies have been successfully posted in the last few days, so apparently I'm not the only one to figure this out.

kswl Jun 21st, 2006 08:56 AM

Uh-uh, girlfriend! You name will be MUD at our next church supper! :D

iceeu2 Jun 21st, 2006 09:02 AM

I knew it! I just knew it! kswl, you are 2 cool. Wish I could see you on Saturday. Who is taking the camera?

btw, thanks rkkwan. It worked!!

wow Jun 21st, 2006 09:20 AM

Sometimes the post/reply box are misaligned, sometimes not. Obviously this one worked!

GoTravel Jun 21st, 2006 09:28 AM

Explain that again for me?

Suki Jun 21st, 2006 09:48 AM

I just posted this, but I don't think it worked. I am getting the weird misaligned screen also. The left-half of the screen is completely blank.

wow Jun 21st, 2006 10:15 AM

GoTravel, the "post" segment slides over to the far right of the screen. Then the "reply" box is hidden. When you try to post, nothing happens. Rather than type a "Reply" that won't go anywhere I have been hitting "post my reply" on a blank "reply box". This "brings back" a "reply box" onto which I then type & hit "Post my reply". Don't ask me how I figured this out! But, it works! :)

FainaAgain Jun 21st, 2006 11:14 AM

What Wow and Suki said.

kswl Jun 22nd, 2006 04:08 AM

Yesterday I had to do the "post reply" then BACK, cycle three times before the darned thing would actually post.

Now it's up to five cycles of post/back, and I just don't have the time, inclination, or attention span today to deal with it.

Buh-bye, Fodors. [(

rkkwan Jun 22nd, 2006 05:17 AM

kswl - Wow, you certainly have a very short attention span. To post this reply, I have to hit "back" and then "Post Reply" twice. Hm, that takes me about 5 seconds extra. I can deal with that.

vegasnative Jun 22nd, 2006 06:51 AM

=D> left click, left click,...back, back, back...right click, left click, right...back, back back...=D> all together now...

CAPH52 Jun 22nd, 2006 09:21 AM

FWIW, I seem to have better luck by clicking on the post a reply at the top, just under the title, than by clicking on the one at the bottom, under all the replies. Of course, as I clicked on it to post this response, I had to hit it twice! I know the editors have been made aware that there's a problem. And they say they're working on it. But this is, what, the third or fourth day now?

suze Jun 22nd, 2006 11:34 AM

Click between "post a reply to this message" and your "back" arrow until the screen looks normal. Then the post will work.

wow Jun 22nd, 2006 01:03 PM

Sometimes you have to click the "blank" "Post My Reply" twice to get the "normal" screen to appear.

kswl Jun 22nd, 2006 07:01 PM

Well, rkwan, my posting problems and situation are obviously not exactly like yours, are they? It doesn't simply take an extra five seconds on my computer, but thanks for diagnosing it all the same.

I've been out of town all day and decided to try it again, and now the "post a reply" box for typing posts is so far off screen I can hardly see it. And now, when I click on preview or post, a brand new window opens with the reply box---off to one side, of course. I've tried to post this six times, and have seven windows open as a result.

I don't have the tolerance and time for problems that don't show any signs of mitigation. Just one of my many character flaws :)

wow Jun 22nd, 2006 07:10 PM

kswl: just go to the right. Click on "post my reply"(blank reply). The "normal" screen then comes up.

rkkwan Jun 22nd, 2006 07:11 PM

kswl - It's the same problem. I've seen it 3-4 days, many times. Including just now when I tried to do this reply.

When you see that offset screen, do not do anything except hitting "back" to try again. No point, as your reply won't go through. Yes, I found out about that after my first unsuccessful reply.

Again, if you see anything unusual, go back. Then try again. I've done maybe 20 replies in the last few days, and it worked. At home, at work. IE, Firefox, Mozilla. PC, Mac.

emd Jun 22nd, 2006 07:17 PM

forget all the left click, right clicks.

just take a hammer and smash the computer screen and go to bed.

ronkala Jun 22nd, 2006 07:23 PM

I had the same results Caph. Using the top post worked. #-o

LoveItaly Jun 22nd, 2006 09:17 PM

Well after three tries here, I can finally post I guess, I say with fingers crossed (hard to do when typing though).

I have posted on three to four post tonight..none got posted. What a waste of time.

bluestar Jun 22nd, 2006 09:26 PM

You've had no luck attempting to post a reply/start a thread as rkkwan has outlined above (3rd post above yours)?

Works for me.

HyacinthBucket Jun 22nd, 2006 09:35 PM

We use a web browser no one ever speaks of at Fodors: "Opera"

It is an excellent program very compact in size, loads and runs quickly. It is available in both a free version and one that costs a small fee that is well worth paying. It was written by a Danish company. Now you know how much that "free" browser you got with your computer is worth. European products have always been better. Upgrade your p.c. and spend more time browsing or touring and spend less time writing of your online woes.

jamaltay Jun 22nd, 2006 09:36 PM

I posted a lengthy TR a little while ago. After pasting in my first draft and making a few changes, I clicked to preview it. After previewing I went back to do some more editing. After editing for about 15 minutes I clicked to preview. Nothing changed. I went back to edit and did some more editing for 10-15 minutes. Then to preview. Nothing changed. I said to my self......"Self, hell with it!"....and posted it.

I guess right now the system will accept your first preview as final. Once previewed it will not let you edit. You have a choice of posting it as is or copy, erase and take it offline to edit, then re-post. I had messed with it long enough, so what you see in my TR is the first draft.

Oh well, I need another beer!
((D))8-)

starrsville Jun 22nd, 2006 09:36 PM

testing

starrsville Jun 22nd, 2006 09:37 PM

well, darn. It posted on the first attempt - first time in days.

Could it be fixed?

starrsville Jun 22nd, 2006 09:37 PM

Yep! I think so. Yahoo!

bluestar Jun 22nd, 2006 09:49 PM

It's <b>not</b> fixed.

I think the problem has something to do with those freekn expandable advertisements in the right margin.

jamaltay Jun 22nd, 2006 09:51 PM

Hyacinth,

It is not a browser problem!

kswl Jun 23rd, 2006 03:40 AM

emd--I did give up sewing years ago when I decided to &quot;fix&quot; the machine with a hammer. But I've been able to find Other People to sew for me; not sure I can find a similar, satisfying proxy experience for Fodor's :D

Malesherbes Jun 23rd, 2006 04:44 AM

I'm sure it's not fixed yet. This reply box was on the right side of the page.

NO not a browser problem, Bucket.

Jamaltay...that's a different problem altogether--an old one they have yet to fix. It happens any time you write something lengthy. You think you've got it all edited perfectly, then it posts with every spelling or gramtical error you ever made in it. :-]

DebitNM Jun 23rd, 2006 05:01 AM

Well, I WAS going to say that it was finally working for me this morning...until I just went to reply to THIS thread!!! and got the reply box all the way to the right.

I always &quot;copy&quot; what I've written...just in case. That way, I can &quot;paste&quot; in case something goes wrong with my reply or any original post I write. I learned the hard...having written something lenghty or detailed...only to have it not show up for some reason.

Technology...ain't it grand?

Debi

emd Jun 23rd, 2006 05:22 AM

kswl: that is why I do NOT sew.
