Planning Maui, Need experienced help

I'm in the process of planning out our week long vacation in Maui (in Jan).<BR><BR>Arrival Day: <BR>Get the rental, stop by walmart/costco and pick up a cooler, and other items. Is there place near the airport (OGG) for dinner? If not we'll just grab some food and eat it at the cottage.<BR><BR>Day 2:<BR>The plan is to wake up early and head to west maui for a helecopter ride (the one recommened in "Maui Revealed").<BR><BR>....the plan aftwards is to check out the beaches in west maui, just plain relax. Does any have any suggestions for rest of day (beaches, restuarants, etc)?<BR><BR>....oh, we plan to go to Laihana on a separate day. So no Laihana on Day 2..<BR><BR>Tentative plan for rest of the week:<BR>------------------------------------<BR><BR>Day 3:<BR>Nothing Planned<BR><BR>Day 4:<BR>Road to Hana<BR><BR>Day 5:<BR>Laihana (whenever we wake up). <BR><BR>Day 6:<BR>H. Natl Park, sunrise bike ride<BR><BR>Day 7:<BR>Nothing Planned.<BR><BR><BR>So, do you suggest any rearranging? I'm new to this, help me out here :) Thanks in advance!<BR><BR>JJSoon

Samantha Sep 12th, 2002 07:27 AM

Hey, well Road to Hana... in one day? That sounds like a rough day. Maybe you want to split it up, and spend the night in Hana? <BR><BR>Think about it. Other suggestions, maybe the others can help you on that.<BR><BR>Samantha Long

x Sep 12th, 2002 07:31 AM

What time will you arrive and where is your cottage located? That info may help us find dinner for you.

JJSoon Sep 12th, 2002 07:58 AM

Sorry about that --<BR><BR>Roughly 5:30 pm on Monday. Our cottage is in the Upcountry (KULA).<BR><BR>JJSoon

Nova Sep 12th, 2002 08:14 AM

Don't plan anything. Just go and take it one day at a time.<BR><BR>

Pamela Sep 12th, 2002 08:20 AM

I have a tip. When we went to Maui, we did the road to Hana on our second day. Since we weren't adjusted to the time zone yet and our internal clocks said it was later, it was easier to get a good early head start. We did the road in one day and it was fine.<BR><BR>Maybe you should do a whale watching cruise. The whales are out in full force in Janaury.

x Sep 12th, 2002 08:37 AM

Well, I can see why you'd want to get some chow before driving to Kulu.<BR><BR><BR>Marco's Grill & Deli, good stop going to or coming from the airport. Italian food, seating in booths. 444 Hana Hwy. Suite M., Kahului.<BR><BR>To splurge (make sure you have reservations before you leave) Mama's Fish House in Paia. 15 minutes from Kahului. <BR><BR>If you can wait until you get to Kula, little less than 1 hour, the Kula Lodge has great views.

JJSoon Sep 12th, 2002 08:49 AM

Pamela,<BR><BR>I don't want to tire out my wife -- so that's why day 3 I have it as nothing planned. <BR><BR>For Day 2 (the first FULL day), after the helecopter ride, we just check out the whatever great beaches in west maui. Have lunch (or a picnic) and then finally have a nice dinner. <BR><BR>What are some of your favorite beaches in west maui (not including the ones near Laihana)? <BR><BR>Laihana, I heard has some whale-watching cruises? I'm really interested in that magic show/dinner show that authors in Maui Revealed, seems interesting. Has any seen it?<BR><BR>Snorkel/Scuba -- I'm not a great swimmer and I dont want to end up drowning in Hawaii, that would really suck. <BR><BR>Thanks,<BR>JJSoon

Mike Sep 12th, 2002 09:30 AM

Beach recommendations:<BR>Kaanapali Beach in the vicinty of Black Rock by the Sheraton is a great beach, just north of Lahaina<BR><BR>Kapalua is a very picturesque beach just 15 minutes north of Kaanapali. <BR><BR>Wailea (on the south side) is about 30 minutes away from Lahaina and is also a great beach - lots of activity, great view.<BR><BR>If you want something different, go past Wailea down to the Black Sand Beach - we were there with just a couple of fisherman one day this July, but the kids got a big kick out of it.

Patty Sep 12th, 2002 09:49 AM

You can take whale watching cruises out of Lahaina or Maalaea harbor (closer to Kula). Warren and Annabelles is a great show - don't miss it! We were skeptical at first too since we're not really into magic shows but it was hilarious!

Pat Sep 12th, 2002 11:06 AM

While at Walmart/costco, buy a cheap styrofoam belly board. It looks a little dorky but can really make the snorkeling experience for you. Rent tne snorkel, mask and fins anywhere; they're all pretty much the same. The sunrise bike trip is problematical. You'll have a long wait to descend due to all bike ride vendors have a quota for start times; also, you'll freeze waiting. I'd try it mid morning or early afternoon. Hang loose.

mtsod Sep 12th, 2002 12:46 PM

Skip the road to Hana. Waiste of time and a tourist trap. Road and waterfalls were crowded and full of people diving in them. Not secluded.

bettyk Sep 12th, 2002 01:12 PM

Yes, Warren & Annabelle's is definitely worth seeing. There is a Ruth's Chris Steakhouse right next door too! We also enjoyed the Maui Ocean Center near Maalea Harbor. Buzz's Wharf is a good place to eat right at the harbor.

Marti Sep 12th, 2002 01:32 PM

Road to Hana is beautiful, not a tourist trap at all, there's not a single store, except for a quaint fruit stand the whole way. Yes it's crowded, but you're in Maui! Anyway, my advice is, don't feel like you have to go to the top of Hana, and certainly don't feel like you have to spend the night !! (pack, unpack, check in, check out....) Just go for a couple of hours up, then back down. have fun!

SWW Sep 13th, 2002 07:31 AM

We returned from Maui on last Monday. I'd also suggest you do road to Hana the first or second day, while you're in Kula. We stayed our first 2 nights about 20 minutes from airport, in Haikiu,on the road, We were glad, as that gave us a headstart. We left at 8 a.m. on Wed, had no traffic at all going. We got back to our cottage at 5:30, went to Mama's Fishhouse for dinner (no reservations)were seated immediately. It was a great meal in beautiful setting, around $90 (included 1 drink each, no appetizers, no desserts). The next day we were convenient to head up the volcano. We didn't go for sunrise, got there around 10 a.m., no crowds. The park ranger told us that the tourism board pushes the sunrises because that gets us up and out early, spending our tourists' bucks. He said the sunsets are his favorite. We had considered the bike ride, but those people we met coming down, did NOT look like they were having fun. Also met a lady later in week who had done it and said a biker in her group crashed and was severely injured, transported by ambulance, police, etc. Said the police said it happens at least once every week. I think doing it at the end of your vacation is wise, just in case...

Pamela Sep 13th, 2002 07:46 AM

SWW-<BR>It sounds like you did something similar to what we did when we did the Road to Hana. By doing it our second day, we got a head start on the traffic and stopped for dinner at Mama's on the way back (around 5:30). We didn't have reservations either, but were seated right away. The best meal that I have ever had (food, atomosphere, service).

JJSoon Sep 13th, 2002 09:33 PM

Thank you everyone for such great suggestions. After looking at my dates again -- I have one whole extra day! that I did not account for. -- just proves how big of a novice I am =)<BR><BR>Three hours around the west maui to see the blowhole? Wow that's crazy long. Not sure if we'll up for another car ride after Hana.<BR><BR>It seems like from all the reading, they aren't any secluded, non-crowded beaches anywhere huh?<BR><BR>Oh another concern, if we're kayaking, what if a huge whale rips through the water --- we'll be toast!? :) <BR><BR>I wanna see dolphins up close. What are ways to say for in-experienced swimmer like myself?<BR><BR>Thanks,<BR>JJSoon<BR><BR><BR>

Juan Sep 15th, 2002 02:21 PM

Wow.... can that happen for real? Can a whale just shot out of the water and land on the small kyack? Seriously speaking has this happened before?<BR><BR>Juan

Marilyn Sep 15th, 2002 03:01 PM

A few opinions/facts:<BR><BR>1. The road to Hana is extremely beautiful and well worth the day. Be sure to stop often and check out views, botanical preserves, etc. You can definitely do it in one day with an early start, not to mention that if you are in Kula you are closer than coming from west Maui which is the usual situation.<BR><BR>2. You have a better chance of winning the lottery than of a whale breaching and landing on you. In fact, you have a better chance of being picked for the next space mission. I have been around whales in the wild often and they are extremely intelligent and in my experience, quite careful and "benevolent". If you see any or get close to them, you will be blessed.

Postal Sep 15th, 2002 03:45 PM

You'll get a lot of differing opinions and here's another one: I've been to Maui several times and still feel the day we spent driving to Hana and back was the biggest waste of a day we EVER spent on the island! Since you're staying upcountry, do not miss a sunrise at Haleakala! To me, this is much more magnificent then the Hana trip. Same goes for a whale watching cruise - it's a million times better than Hana.

bbb Sep 15th, 2002 04:37 PM

I agree about Hana. It is nice bit not worth a whole day.<BR><BR>I suggest that If you live on the coast and have seen many marine drives you will not like the Road to Hana. Also, if you are under 35-40 years old you will probably not like the road to Hana.

Fluff Sep 15th, 2002 08:04 PM

OK, my 2 cents worth. I started going to Maui in 1989 -- before they'd even built those huge hotels in Wailea. Did the road to Hana, on to the 7 pools, Lindberg's grave, and ate at the hotel in Hana and back to watch world class surfers then back to our condo at Malaeea (sp) all in one day. No big deal. The little archaelogocial spot on the ocean cliffs near the 7 pools is one of the most beautiful spots I've ever seen and yes I've been to Br Isles, Mex, AK, OR, CA and Canada. Lahaina is fun -- for a tourist day. My husband would just as soon spend the whole trip under one palm tree with a drink and never go anywhere. He would say DON'T plan. I wasn't crazy about the volcano -- but then, I heard St.Helens blow up! Try the Scotch Mist or America Cup sailboat for an evening sunset whale watching cruise from Lahaina. If you're lucky, you can look eyeball to eyeball at them. If your're staying in Kula, be sure to go to the Tedeschi Winery and the Up..... (can't spell it) country store. If you get a GOOD map, or an informed local, there is a short cut from Kula down to the east/west highway that saves about 1/2 hour. Mostly relax; you'll enjoy it more if you aren't fighting the traffic. Why am I telling you all this? I'm SICK of the Maui traffic and my Feb vacation will be on Oahu and Kauai this year. Have fun.

JJSoon Sep 16th, 2002 07:19 AM

Thanks one again....<BR><BR>Is Maui traffic worse than NYC-Long Islam 5 pm traffic on the Long Island Expressway? We can handle that... but if it's worse than that, God have mercy :)<BR><BR>JJSoon

Patty Sep 16th, 2002 11:11 AM

The problem with driving in Maui is that there is often only one road in and out of a particular destination. In the event of an accident, you are literally stuck. This happened to us last year on the way from the airport in Kahului to west Maui. We were stuck in Maalaea for about 4 hours. Luckily we were right next to a shopping plaza and were able to kill our time at a couple of restaurants/bars. When we told our waitress what happened, her reaction was "not again!" You probably won't run into anything that extreme, but it's just an example of what can happen. I did see some road work/expansion going on when we were there this May so hopefully, they are addressing the problems.

SEW Sep 16th, 2002 11:19 AM

JJSoon<BR><BR>Take the Road to Hana. If you have a convertible, even better. I can appreciate all those who don't like the drive, but it's one of those things that you just have to relax and enjoy the trip. Don't hurry!!!! We ate at the hotel in Hana and I think I would have enjoyed a picnic somewhere along the way. <BR><BR>There's also a good state beach in West Maui by the Four Seasons, but Kapalua is still my favorite and definately on Kaanapali near black rock if you want to snorkle.<BR><BR>We have gone on a kayak trip a couple of times. They had snorkle gear and you got to see some parts you wouldn't have seen before, so if you're up to it give it a try. Usually about 3 or 4 hour trips so if you go in the early (before the trade winds kick up) it's best. We've gone from both the State beach in West Maui and from Makena. Each was good, but I did like west Maui better because the snorkeling was better.<BR><BR>We have enjoyed eating at HaileMaile General store and it would be convenient for upcountry. If you drink, have a lava flow. There is also a winery that's at the end of a road in upcountry. Very nice tasting room and pretty grounds. It is on the tourist bus routes so can be crowded at times.<BR><BR>At Whaler's village (In Kaanapali), Eat at Hula Grill. Lealani's is right next door, but I haven't been in a while. Good for lunch or dinner.<BR><BR>We have always planned where we were eating for the week on the first day, that way we can make reservations. I have never been in January so don't know how busy it is. We also have always planned out activities so we make reservations early in the week. We do like our whims, but haven't missed out on something to do by a little planning.<BR><BR>Keep an eye on the weather, if it's cloudy, views will not be as good at Haleakalea. It's usually clearer in the morning as the clouds develop in the afternoon. I've been when it's cloudy and I've been when it's clear. Clear is better!!<BR><BR>Have a good time. Maui's a great time.

Jauricia Sep 17th, 2002 11:29 AM

Instead of starting a new thread...<BR><BR>We too are going for honeymoon in Maui. We are tad bit reserved. So, I was wondering where we can find secluded beaches in Maui?<BR><BR>Jauricia

mari Sep 18th, 2002 02:22 AM

jj--<BR><BR>u have several options for good restaurants upcountry. nothing memorable near the airport in kahului, altho i've heard there is a new latino/fusion place in a garage w/ an acclaimed chef.<BR><BR>if u land at 5:30 in january and head to costco for some shopping before driving up the mountain, u're likely looking at abt a 6:30 start. will be dark by then in midwinter.<BR><BR>upcountry, ur options are<BR><BR>--haliimaile general store off haleakala hwy in haliimaile, abt 10-15 minutes out of kahului. best restaurant upcountry, consistent quality, memorable. no view. dinner entrees run up to abt high-20s (ask abt a special discount on mondays--can't remember details). right on ur way to kula.<BR><BR>--casanova's italian restaurant in makawao, a short (5 min?) detour off haleakala hwy. live music some nights. no view. less pricey than haliimaile.<BR><BR>--makawao steakhouse. ur basic steakhouse, w/ a nice cozy atmosphere w/ fireplace. no view.<BR><BR>--kula lodge. great view in the daytime, w/ beautiful landscaped gardens. food is pretty good. not as pricey as haliimaile.

p. Sep 18th, 2002 09:17 AM

Definitely do a whale watch cruise, we did one mid May and there were still a few around, we went with www.pacificwhale.org out of Maaleeae(sp). Yes, there was a casr in Kauai where a baby whale jumped out of the water for fun but landed on a boat and broke someone's leg. You'd be more likely to win the lottery tho'.<BR><BR>We also liked the show Ulalena in Lahaina.<BR><BR>Have a great trip.

Maureen Sep 21st, 2002 03:20 PM

We have been to Maui the past two Novembers and are planning another trip. No Walmart or Costco. There is a Kmart near the Kahului airport. Mam's Fish House is a must. Lunch is cheaper than dinner, but still pricey - worth every cent. The road to Hana is only enjoyable if you get out and look at the water falls. Be sure to take a snack and something to drink. As far as the traffic, I have driven all over the island and have never been in a traffic jam. If you are in Lahaina on Friday night the Art Galleries are open and generally have music, beautiful art and great people watching. Enjoy.

abc Sep 21st, 2002 05:47 PM

There definitely is a Walmart in Maui - near the airport. Also there is a Costco nearby.

Can mainlanders drink the water in hawaii?

xxx Sep 22nd, 2002 07:33 AM

Drink the water ? Haven't you heard of Pele's revenge ??

Denise Sep 23rd, 2002 01:16 AM

JJ: Check out the beach in Napili Bay (near Kapalua, West Maui)--it's supposed to be really nice, better than the beaches in Ka'anapali where we stayed. Near Wailea, check out Makena Beach but pack your own snacks and drinks b/c I don't remember seeing anyplace to buy anything (the beach seems popular with the locals).<BR><BR>Also, the drive from Lahaina to Wailea took us more like 45min to 1 hour and we did it several times in the week we were there. Do the Road to Hana--there is even a waterfall that empties into a pool where a few people were swimming (wish we would have known so we could have packed swimsuits and towels). There is a black ssnd beach with caves at Waianapanapa State Park which is also a nice place to explore and stretch your legs.<BR>If you decide to bike down Haleakala, do it with Maui Downhill Adventures and not one of the guided tours (which were referred to as "misguided adventures.") You must go at their pace, so if you want to stop for a picture or admire the view, you're screwed. It was a little scary at first, but what a rush once your acclimated!<BR>Most importantly, "plan" a day or two to RELAX!! Enjoy Maui!

JJSoon Sep 23rd, 2002 08:12 AM

Pele's revenge? Are you making that up?<BR><BR>JJsoon

Samantha Sep 25th, 2002 11:38 AM

Hello, I was wondering if anyone did a lei? Anyone know any good companies?<BR><BR>Thanks,<BR>Samantha

Samantha, here are three references. I used leis of Hawaii. They were really great.<BR><BR>www.maui411.com/leigreeting_services.html<BR>www.leisofhawaii.com/greet.html<BR>www.alohafriends.com/lei.htm

If I'm leaving KULA for my drive to Hana how much time would I save? Because I'm considering stay at HANA for a night if it gets late. We plan to leave around 6.30-7am (from Kula).<BR><BR>Thanks,<BR>JJSoon

michelle Sep 26th, 2002 07:40 AM

Road to Hana was my favorite part of the trip! We used Maui Revealed book and it was wonderful. Left our hotel at 7am, got back at 7pm. Long day but well worth it.<BR><BR>We went to see sunrise at Haleakala and have no idea what all the fuss was about. I'd never wake up at 2am to do that again. Maybe we just had a cloudy day. Check the forecast!!

MMN Sep 26th, 2002 11:31 AM

Ah...LIE traffic at 5PM...<BR>that reminds me of my drive from Wailea to Lahaina. Yup, that's about right.<BR>There was an accident on the road - the ONLY road to Lahaina and so we all basically waited while the accident was cleared. All in all, it took us at least 2 hours. I was really disappointed by all the traffic & construction on Maui - it's very commercialized. Not like Kauai.<BR><BR>My hubby and I didn't really like Lahaina - but I guess to go just to get a whale watch cruise is okay. It was packed when we were there one night.<BR><BR>I agree with the Mama's Fish House recommendations. Wonderful food and ambiance. Our dinner was $180 for the 2 of us but we had a bottle of wine, 1 appetizer to split, and entree each, and 1 dessert to split.<BR><BR>Sunrise at the National Park was beautiful. Definitely recommend it. But we didn't do the bike ride - looked more dangerous than fun.<BR><BR>Road to Hana was a beautiful drive, long day, wouldn't do it again but glad we did it the once. There are a few almost deserted places to swim - they're just a little off the main road. Read Maui Revealed. Our day was 7:30AM - 7:30PM. Too tired for a dinner out that night - cancelled our reservations.
