Ouch! OCLlocal put Kansas on his "bad" list--my chosen home state. Actually, I should be grateful because I would hate for everyone to discover what a great place we have here for living and raising a family! We have clean air, plenty of water, ample electricity. It takes me three minutes to drive to work. The people here are fantastic--down to earth, yet progressive. We have wonderful flat plains. On a clear day, you CAN see forever (and as our state song claims "the skies are not cloudy all day!") Remember that Dorothy (from the Wizard of Oz) when transported to the dazzling, magical land of Oz couldn't rest until she could return home. There's no place like Kansas!

Okay, here are my favorites:
New York City (Manhattan)- I had heard how dangerous, dirty, and rude NYC was. We spent 10 exciting days there. My daughter says the best thing about New York is that you feel you are about to embark on an adventure there.
Denver, Colorado and the surrounding area
Rocky Mountains (simply majestic)
Chicago
Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota (wonderful climate in the summer)

Once was wonderful, but I don't need to go back:
Asheville, North Carolina and the Smoky Mountains (beautiful area)
Cancun
Dallas, TX

Well, Rose, it just might interest you to know just how utterly shocked I was when I first crossed the line into Kansas on my way across the country. Lawrence, Topeka and the Kansas City area (and probably a few others I can't remember) were surrounded by beautiful, small green mountains on both sides of the main highway (I-70?) for quite a bit of my drive across your state years ago! I just couldn't believe it!! "This is KANSAS?" I kept repeating to myself?!? But, unfortunately, after awhile, it did become flat and barren for the rest of the trip. But, my, my -- upon entering your state in the beginning -- what an absolute pleasant surprise!!

I beg to differ about Washington, D.C. being a place to visit only once. Aside from great restaurants and a great hotel (The Madison), there's so much to see and do there that you could visit several times. The Smithsonian takes a week if properly examined. And who says you can't see it all over again? If nothing else, enjoying the city, great dining and the surrounding area makes it a repeat place to visit.

Places to return, again and again:

1. ITALY, the most beautiful place on earth, IMHO.
2. ENGLAND, having been there 6 times, each visit is a new encounter.
3. NAPA, every year there's a new winery to check out and a new crop of Cabs to sample.
4. Washington, D.C., Great hotel (The Madison), great restaurants and even greater museums.
5. San Francisco

Never again:

Actually, San Diego must be the most boring city in California. I live in LA so maybe that's why it's so bla.

Sea World is a major disapointment though the San Diego Zoo is worth seeing.
|
Been there, done that:
Fort Lauderdale
Las Vegas
San Antonio
Baltimore
FLORIDA
WDW

Done and gonna do again:
Chicago (go at least twice a year)
Boston
Atlanta (Buckhead, Midtown)
Highlands, NC
Germany
Austria
Canada

Gonna do this summer and can't wait:
Seattle
I have a hard time with Washington DC as well, notwithstanding that there ARE certainly some unique and impressive sites.

And if I could only take 5 trips for the rest of my life, I would take every single one of them to Paris.

Hello,

Much like never having a pizza I didn't like, I think I would always rather be anywhere but @ work!

So, I'd go back to anyplace 2-3 times as long as it doesn't have anything to do with work.

These lists do remind me of "one man's meat-another's poison".
Mahalo y'all,
Kal
|
One time only:
Miami
Fiji (although it was just after a cyclone so it was pretty ugly but didn't like the peddlers)
Cancun
Caracus
Mazatlan
Amergris Caye, Belize

Go back again and again:
New Zealand
Australia
Cook City and Red Lodge, Montana
Canadian Rockies
London (if you like theatre)
Okay, I'm curious. Has anyone tabulated all the choices? I'd be interested in seeing what the count is. It seems like Fodors would want to know what the readers consider the most popular/least popular destinations are.

This is such a great topic--I love it! I noticed that no one put "Ireland" in the "never go back" category (I could be wrong). I'm going soon and I'm just curious if anyone WOULD put it in the never to return category?
