I would not go to Wisconsin Dells, Branson, and FL. Nothing against those places but the first two would be too tacky even for me and Fl has nothing I'm interested in.

If I can pick anywhere in the world not to return to, it would be China. Wonderful historical sites, etc, but smog is horrible, majority of the people were rude and there are waaaaay too many people for me.

If we're sticking to US only, I would pick Pigeon Forge, TN.

Maui!!!!!

High end hotels with hundreds of people on cell phones by the pool(may as well be in L.A.).

One road with many, many stop lights.

High end restaurants in strip malls($200 dinner next to a junk store). Avoid Roy's at all costs.

Water not pretty like the Caribbean.

Other than that, I have no strong opinion on the subject!

Never ever again will I swim in the underground water at XCaret in Mexico near Cancun.

Doubt I'll ever do the night walk through the rain forest in Costa Rica again.

I wouldn't go back to Jamaica. My husband and I stayed in a villa, not a resort, and felt unwelcome almost every time we traveled somewhere on the island (when we weren't being accosted to buy something)--and the poverty was heartbreaking.

Nassau was beautiful from the water, but I spent an hour on land and fled back to the cruise ship: Much too touristy.

I also wouldn't go back to that B&B in western Ireland that had damp sheets. Fortunately, that was years ago and they've probably dried by now....

WHAT IS WRONG WITH TEXAS? It is beautiful, some areas more so than others, but that applies to all states and countries.

rileypenny, what happened on your night walk in CR? We loved ours.

I disliked St. Louis, MO. I will never go back to Tijuana. I have never been and have no desire to go to India, Iran, Afghanistan, or any of those hot dry places that are full of hostile people.
It's interesting seeing places I enjoyed listed here...........

Places I have never been to and won't ever go:
1) an all-inclusive resort
2) a cruise ship
3) Atlantis

Places I won't go ever again:
1) Puerto Rico except for connecting flights elsewhere (never felt so unwelcome in my life - both in San Juan and miles away)

I would like to avoid Disney, but with a 6yo that has never been I could suck it up once if pared down to 1 or 2 days with a nice beach vacation afterward.

As for Rosarita, I would go back only because it was my first 'vacation' with my now-husband - 1990ish. We stayed in a motel that cost $20 and had roaches the size of hubcaps. It was so filthy we wore our socks in the shower! They need to clean up the issues with kidnapping and shootings before we'd return....

As for Texas-haters, the Big Bend area is lovely, and has a more rural Mexico feel (but not Rosarita!) than Texas.

As for "any of those hot dry places that are full of hostile people" - don't Vegas and LA fit that description? What about hot wet places like Boston, New York, Atlanta and New Orleans? I've met hostile people in all those places but still travel there...also don't get aversions to India or "most countries that end with 'stan' ".

nanabee Jan 21st, 2009 08:41 PM

Rosarito is not as bad as TJ in terms of gang violence. It's pretty much still a small beach town with a lot of American expats. I'd still be careful though.

Where did you ever get the idea that the people of India are hostile? That's just plain stupid.

Thin,
who has travelled all over India and Sri Lanka

mscleo Jan 22nd, 2009 07:13 AM

St. Louis, Misery...oops, I meant Missouri, and I live there! That's why I travel so much - to get away, and trust, as soon as I retire, I'm gone for good...

tambennett Jan 22nd, 2009 07:20 AM

Wow is all I can say to most of the replies! How can you form an opinion about a place that you have never visited!?

tenthumbs Jan 22nd, 2009 09:29 AM

"Where did you ever get the idea that the people of India are hostile? That's just plain stupid."

I don't believe I specifically said the people of India were hostile, but some posters on this board certainly have been. There a lot of places listed here that I've been and enjoyed that people listed as their personal "place you refuse to go," but I don't feel the need to attack them, call them names, or demand that they explain themselves. We are all different~what one person finds fasciniating is a total yawner to the next person; one person may find beauty in the stark desert while another finds it desolate and miserable; while one persona may enjoy the vibrant pulse of a big city, another may find it overwhelming. tambennet had a valid question~how can you form an opinion about someplace you've never been? I can answer for myself: by reading books, newspaper/magazine articles, speaking to friends who have visited the area and shown me their pictures; the same way I come up with places I've never been and DO want to visit.

>I have never been and have no desire to go to India, Iran, Afghanistan, or any of those hot dry places that are full of hostile people<

You didn't write that tenthumbs?

Who are you, Bill Clinton?

"I never had relations with that woman!"

Thin

tenthumbs Jan 22nd, 2009 10:41 AM

yes, I did write that, and perhaps it didn't come across as intended......I sincerely apologize. I mistakenly thought this message board was for fun and information, not to give excuses for some to attack people whose likes and dislikes were different from yours.

"is there anyplace you have been to that you wouldnt go back to?, or a place you have never been to, and simply refuse to travel to?"

This was the original post; I simply answered the question, just as many others have; there are those who refuse to go to Branson, MO, because it's "too tacky," (never been there); those who would avoid places where they are "likely to get sick from the food or water" (that can happen ANYWHERE); Las Vegas, "it holds no appeal to me and I hate gambling" (there are things to do other than gambling); someone who said Eastern Europe looks "too dark:' someone doesn't fancy Vietnam because she "doesn't like to see grubby things and poverty while on holiday." These are all personal opinions, not insults, and I don't feel any one deserve nastiness simply for voicing their opinions in answer to the original post.

Barcelona, Spain. The cabbies are thieves and you constantly have to worry about pickpocketers and being mugged. Not really a nice place. Thankfully we found some nice americans to help us!

mark99 Jan 22nd, 2009 12:00 PM

Easy:

Vegas - yuk yuk yuk
funiest line heard "ohh look at the beautiful european art"

Sanibel Island - boring boring!
favorite line heard from wife "please tell me we are not prepaid"

Maui - too boring for us, but lets face it, still one of the most beautiful places on the planet.
