The sound of the giant dipper at the Boardwalk is the sound track of my childhood summers - we could hear it from our house :) And it was a rite of passage when you were old enough to go to the Boardwalk without your parents.

The different towns along the coast appeal to different people for different reasons. And if shopping is important, then Pismo Beach is not the place for you. On the otherhand, not everybody cares for shopping.

Thanks again for all that have taken the time to reply. You all have given me much to consider. It is so hard to get a feel for a place that you have never been to and nearly impossible for me to communicate what we want out of a vacation. But you all have helped tremendously and we have decided to stay in Santa Barbara as it has most of what we want to do which is primarily to relax and spend time together with some hiking and biking, golfing, shopping and eating. We'll take a day trip or too up to San Simeon with stops along the way - especially the nice hikes bear900 has posted about in another post. Sincere thanks to you all.

Can anyone recommend a nice oceanfront hotel in Pismo Beach CA or surrounding areas. Want a room on the beach if possible..
