ipod_robbie Mar 16th, 2008 12:30 PM

What kind of pet do you wish to rent?

cabovacation Mar 16th, 2008 12:36 PM

I can rent you my neighbor's Beagle. Shhh.

Scarlett Mar 16th, 2008 03:08 PM

You can rent a pet!??

sylvia3 Mar 16th, 2008 03:42 PM

You can rent to own my cat: I call her "pee cat."

Scarlett Mar 16th, 2008 05:11 PM

I should start charging, not rent, but a fee , every time someone asks if they can take a picture of Pup...

((&))

gail Mar 16th, 2008 06:39 PM

You actually can rent dogs - read an article in NYTimes a few months ago about how some people in NYC and a few other large cities think it is a cool thing to do. When I find reference I will post it. In the mean time, you may rent either one of my cats for cheap and I may throw my husband in on the deal.

Rhea58 Mar 17th, 2008 01:27 AM

Gail - are both housebroken?

maribethp Mar 17th, 2008 04:46 AM

I have a husband. Do you really think I would rent another?

AAFrequentFlyer Mar 17th, 2008 05:05 AM

Upon request a luxury hotel in NY will bring up a goldfish for the duration of your stay.

gyppielou Mar 17th, 2008 05:29 AM

Not sure if this is still true. If you were homesick for your pooch, you could hire a hound to accompany you on your road to Hana adventure.

socialworker Mar 17th, 2008 09:02 AM

While I have enjoyed this thread as much as anyone, I think that 321go is the only dear Fodorite who has actually answered the OP's query.

Meanwhile, maribeth, do not take offense at the fun that people have been having w/your heading. It is good-natured. I have to admit that ipod robbie wrote exactly what I was thinking when I saw the heading.... :)

cybor Mar 17th, 2008 09:32 AM

Rent?
How about I give you my bad dog. Just have lots of food.
He stole a full pan of lemon macaroons.

txgirlinbda Mar 17th, 2008 10:03 AM

How about two German Shepards in the Tampa area - I can probably get my friend to pay YOU to take them for a few days.

michelleNYC Mar 17th, 2008 10:25 AM

Why do you want to *rent* a pet????

tuckerdc Mar 17th, 2008 10:58 AM

Poor OP! Didn't you realize what you were "petting" yourself in fur, didja ya now!!

Anyway, try VRBO.com (vacation rentals by owner); listings indicate which are pet friendly and they have a lot for Florida. We stayed in Seagrove a few years ago, with our dog, and had a great time.

starrs Mar 17th, 2008 11:01 AM

I had my usual pet goldfish at the Hotel Monaco in SF last week. No "rental" fee - complimentary while you stay there. I named this one "Cybill" in honor of Cybill Shepherd and her play, the Curvy Widow.

annesherrod Mar 17th, 2008 11:31 AM

Why would you want to rent a pet?

I know people who have leased horses, because buyihg one was too expensive.

I cannot think of a reason to rent a pet- do elaborate!

starrs Mar 17th, 2008 11:35 AM

Companionship while on vacation.

I think it's a big deal in Japan.

starrs Mar 17th, 2008 11:38 AM

And, here's an option for "renting" a pet while you are at home -

And at least one person thought I was talking story here!

michelleNYC Mar 17th, 2008 01:19 PM

Alas, Maribeth is keeping her "whys" and "whynots" to herself and we will never know why she wishes to hire a kitty/poochy.

gail Mar 17th, 2008 01:22 PM

flexpetz.com is a site for "shared dog ownership" - I think that is renting a pet (or perhaps leasing a pet, I am not sure)

J62 Mar 17th, 2008 01:28 PM

I do believe maribethp meant to write pet "friendly" rental, not pet rental. What a difference a word makes.

It does make for an interesting thread though.

It also begs me to ask gail if she meant leasing or a pet, or forgot an h.

gail Mar 17th, 2008 03:42 PM

No - really, pets for lease like a car. (But I think one must abide by any local leashing laws as well)

maribethp Mar 17th, 2008 05:39 PM

Hello. It's me again. People who travel with their pets constantly know what pet rental means. At any rate, well, not any rate, I need advice on the best southern FL beaches for pet inclusion. Or nice pet friendly towns.I am glad so many people were amused by my post, however.

Scarlett Mar 17th, 2008 06:18 PM

People who travel with their pets constantly know what pet rental means."
You think?
Maybe it is a geographical thing, I have been traveling with a large dog for the past 8 years and 18 before that with a cat...we never called it pet rentals..
Pet friendly maybe but in the NE and in the PNW, I never heard of "pet rentals"...

annesherrod Mar 18th, 2008 05:37 AM

Thanks Scarlett! I have never heard it referred to that either.

Katie_H Mar 18th, 2008 06:17 AM

Fort Myers or Sanibel come to mind from something I read somewhere a long time ago.

Just checked my Fodor's Florida 2008 here on my desk... we praise a particular park outside of Fort Myers, Lovers Key State Park. A google search yielded these dog rules for that park:
http://www.leeparks.org/pdf/brochure...kscombined.pdf

Not sure that helps the rental question exactly but I assume that were there is dog friendly beaches there are dog friendly rentals.

Perhaps someone with dogs can confirm these two recommendations?

maribethp Mar 18th, 2008 04:07 PM

See now, I would have thought pet rentals would trigger the conceot of rentals that allow pets before one would think of actually renting a pet, but who am I to say? Anyway, thanks to all for the suggestions.

seafox Mar 18th, 2008 04:31 PM

Cybor - do you have a recipe for lemon macaroons???? That sounds like a yummy combo.

artlover Mar 18th, 2008 08:29 PM

Actually, I recall reading a story about hotels that "lend" dogs to people who stay there--I believe it was in Vancouver BC. As a doglover with two German shepherds (who I couldn't rent 'cause they wouldn't go with anyone other than me, DH, or DD), I can understand how someone would want to do this. I for one would.

hockeyfan Mar 19th, 2008 09:02 AM

Rosemary Beach in the panhandle offers some pet friendly rentals. If you search their site for property availability, one option is for pet friendly.

One other thing to check is whether the county where you are staying allows pets on the beach without a license/permit. In Fort Walton, pets on the beach have to have a license/permit; however, to obtain a license/permit, you have to be a resident of the county.

maribethp Mar 19th, 2008 11:40 AM

Nice suggestion, but I think the panhandle is not warm enough in February.

bashfulLV Mar 19th, 2008 02:44 PM

Actually, lately I've read several different articles and even the local t.v. news did a story on folks actually renting pets - so that's what I thought (as well as ohter posters did) when I read your title. I agree that "pet friendly" would probably get more responses of the type you're looking for.

And who would ever really want to rent a pet - how sad it would be for the poor kitty/pooch - they bond with their owners and feel loss when they (the owners) leave them so even if it's a touchy-feely thing for people I think the pets would get the bad end of the deal having to get used to a new person every time they got rented.

maribethp Mar 19th, 2008 03:28 PM

Yes, I agree with everything you just said. very sensible. thanks for your help............

cybor Mar 20th, 2008 04:09 PM

seafox,
Sorry for the delay.
I'll post the recipe in the lounge later.
