Here goes: <BR> <BR>No. 1: Pulp Fiction. I've seen it more times than any other film other than the Wizard of Oz. <BR> <BR>No. 2: Life is Beautiful. How could anyone even think of making a film like this? <BR> <BR>No. 3: Raging Bull. Making a good film in black and white is really hard. <BR> <BR>No. 4: Schindler's List. Another gutsy film, both because of the use of black and white and the subject matter. <BR> <BR>No. 5: A Soldier's Story. Very honest treatment of self-esteem issues among African Americans. Overlooked by Oscar. Too bad. <BR> <BR>In the special category of films that actually made me (of all people!) cry, I'll nominate Sophie's Choice, Terms of Endearment, The Joy Luck Club.

PLEASE- what on earth is the connection between movies and FODOR'S TRAVEL SITE? <BR>

Joy, occasionally -- very occasionally -- there's a tenuous link between topics that otherwise seem unrelated. Rudy wrote of films that capture a place or, better yet, both a place and a time. <BR> <BR>Have you ever seen "To Catch a Thief?" For a generation of Americans, it was an introduction to the glamorous Cote d'Azur. Today, it still is a fabulous film, though the Nice and Cap Ferrat through which Cary Grant and Grace Kelly cavort are changed almost beyond recognition. <BR> <BR>One of my favorite films of all time is "What's Up Doc?", a screwball comedy with Barbra Streisand and Royan O'Neil. But it is also a travelogue of San Francisco; a city I first visited shortly after seeing the film. "Some Like It Hot" celebrates the Del Coronado hotel in San Diego (though the film improbably places the hotel in Florida). "Cinema Paradiso" is a paean to a small village in Sicily as much as it is a remembrance of a love of the cinema. <BR> <BR>If you have ever been moved to go to the Italian Riviera after seeing "Enchanted April", or Paris after a viewing of "Charade" or Mount Rushmore after seeing "North By Northwest, then you know the power of film to inspire the traveler in all of us. <BR> <BR>So, give us the films that have inspired you to travel. How long was it between the time you saw the film and you made the journey. Did the place you visited live up to exectation?

Odysseus: <BR> <BR>Within weeks after seeing "Somewhere in Time", I went to Mackinac Island and stayed at the Grand Hotel, to experience the grandeur of that magnificent place. The hotel did not disappoint, but the island wasn't appealing to me. Cars are not allowed, only horses, part of the charm. However, the omnipresent odor of manure left me reeling. I smelled it for days after departing. <BR> <BR>I also planned a trip to Italy very soon after viewing "Cinema Paradiso".

Sometimes threads like this help us get to know each other a little more. That's the "community" part. People who have no interest should just avoid the thread. <BR> <BR>If Fodors doesn't like it, they'll delete it. <BR> <BR>Why are you such control freaks?

To L: Yes, you are right, my selections show I am a Hitchcok fan. I wasn't really thinking of directors. Other directors I admire: John Ford, John Huston, Geroge Cukor. <BR> <BR>Some other favorite films: <BR>An Affair to Remember <BR>Double Indemnity <BR>Lethal Weapon. <BR> <BR>I do like films from the present and the 60's and 70's. I made my selections based on whether I can sit and watch a film over and over and still enjoy it, and even discover new things.
