Most of the above bands are no longer making music (and many others are way past their creative prime). Don't you get sick of a song after the 300th listen? Hell to me is having to listen to a classic rock station 24/7.

There's good music being made out there. Just like there was 20 years ago. Give it a try.

Personally, I don't get tired of old music, although I might if I listened to it all of the time. I don't hear it that often, so it sounds like a treat compared to everything else out there. Plus, there are so many memories attached to the old stuff. It seems that for every really good song, there was a boyfriend.

Also, I am an R&B fan, and my opinion is this music has pretty much been ruined by rap. So I have to live in the past, for the most part.

But just so you know, my own kids HATE the old music I play. So we have an understanding. I keep quiet about the Backstreet Boys and Brittney Spears, and they keep quiet about Aretha Franklin and Prince.

Delightful thread that has just made my afternoon. Just a final thought: why choose and then argue about it? Enjoy it all - it's all so bound up together, and so human. It's the beat, man. Naming favorites is fun, and signals where you are. Meantime, the beat goes on, and so will you. Even that stupid bass that begs you to take it to the river is making music. Ciao

1. The Beatles
2. Bruce Springsteen
3. James Taylor
4. Carlos Santana
5. Gloria Estefan

I like all the old music. This new stuff today is three chord, screamin, chanting horse crap. Why do you think the Beatles new, "old", greatest hits cd is number one in the world. Because there is nothng else out there. As far as the "pin-head" is concerned, everyone is entitled to their own opinions. I just happen to agree with him on many of his opinions. Does that make me a bad person?

Why not?

The Beatles. No, not just for the #1 songs but for the whole body of work. "Sgt. Pepper" is the best rock album ever done, bar none.

The Beach Boys. Vocal harmonies that transcended rock and roll, and the willingness to venture beyond surfing. "Heroes and Villains" may be my favorite song of all time.

The Supremes. More of a tribute to Holland/Dozier/Holland, but more than any other Motown group, the Supremes brought the music alive. Best single: "Stop! In the Name of Love".

Eric Clapton in any of his incarnations, from Blind Faith to Derek and the Dominos to E.C. on his own. I listened to "Can't Find My Way Home" on my way into work this morning and shook my head in awe.

Mary Chapin-Carpenter. The most intelligent singer-songwriter at work today. "What If We Went to Italy" is rock and roll for adults. I keep waiting for a new album.

Thanks for asking, Shemp.

Paul McCartney called God Only Knows the most beautiful song ever written. Brina is a musical genius. Little Surfer Girl and Sloop John B are my favorites with Wouldn't it be nice a close runner up.

Dear DC,
If I said that the 3 Stooges were a bunch of real funny kikes and I adore them, would that make me an anti-Semite?

Wow, this is hard. Umm...in no particular order and will probably change with my mood...

1. Erykah Badu
2. Sade
3. Prince
4. Les Nubians
5. For some reason I'm really enjoying this new Madonna CD and I've never been a fan of hers. Anyone agree?

I like all types of music, so I'm sure this list will change. For instance, I could easily add Radiohead,The Roots, Dixie Chicks, but then you always got to go back in time to Aretha, Patti Labelle, Gladys Knight, ABBA (come on, you know you like Mama Mia :), Earth Wind & Fire, etc.
